INTRODUCTION
Management operations is the process of production which is controlled and designed by
higher level of authorities for meet targets and objectives within time limit. It is a management
responsibility to make proper use of resources, manpower and material which aid them to give
better quality of goods and services to their customers (Balasubramaniam and et. al., 2016). This
report is based on Marks and Spencer organisation. It is a retail industry which was found by
Thomas Spencer and Sir Michael Marks. They are giving employment to approx. 84,939 workers
in the company. Products of Marks and Spencer are luxury food products, clothing and home
items. In this assignment it include various theories and models of leadership along with that also
define the managers as well as leaders and its difference. Along with this, it also discusses the
value and importance of management operations.
TASK 1
1.1 Overview of the company
Marks and Spencer organisation is a retail industry. It has several branches all over the
globe to reach large numbers of customers and market. It specialises in providing home products,
luxury food items and clothing to fulfil buyer’s requirements. Marks and Spencer is following
the structure of functional which involve human resource, marketing department, marketing,
sales, research and development, purchasing and finance are the divisions made within the
organisation which is controlled by higher level authorities. This company follows flat
organisational structure where employees have given opportunity to communicate with seniors
directly. They can share their problems and views with upper level of management for giving
better performance. This would lead to reduce conflicts which may occur due to superiority and
inferiority at workplace as well as gain higher contribution of staff members for growth of
business.

1.2 Comparison between a manager and a leader
Manager manage the employees by making strategies, distributing works to staff
members as per their abilities and skills. Along with this, supervisor monitor the results and
performance render by employees (Fayol, 2016). This will aid them in organising the programme
of training and development in order to improve skills of employees.
Leader plays a very essential role as they maintain an effective relations with their
employees to make them dedicated as well as motivated towards their job. They also have the
skills of solving disputes which take place among the employees. This give advantage to
organisation to retain competent and skilled employees for a long time.
