Video 1# Mitosis
The video illustrates mitosis using beads which are linked together to represent chromosomes.
In this case, the chromosomes are diploid i.e. one chromosome from the father (the one in
red) and the other chromosome from the mother (the one in yellow). The yellow and red bids in
this case represent genes whereby the red bits are genes from the father and the yellow bits are
genes from the mother. However, it is also significant to note that the central part connecting the
bids is the centromere. Chromosomes are aligned along the diameter of the nuclear (circular part)
in accordance to their sizes as shown in the figure below.
‘Going mitosis’ is simply making an exact copy of the nucleus. In this case, before
subdivision, the cell will grow bigger and make exact copies of the chromosomes as shown in

the figure bellow. This will occur at the interphase. At this point, the chromosomes are referred
to as sister chromosomes.
However, the chromosomes will not appear until they reach the prophase. At the
prophase, the chromosomes will move apart and appear as shown in the figure below.
At the metaphase, the spindle fibers will be attached to the sister chromosomes and aline
them at the centre as shown below.
