INTRODUCTION
Organizational behaviour is an important aspect in determining the policies, procedures, and
roles that can help in better functioning of the organization. The report makes effective
discussion on the present culture of British Broadcasting Company. It also focuses on discussing
different types of team that can be formed in order to achieve the objectives. A comprehensive
discussion will be made on barriers that can acts as an obstacle in the functioning of the teams. In
the end, a brief discussion will be made on different types of motivation theories that can be
adopted by BBC.
TASK 1
a) Organizational culture within BBC using Handy's topology.
A cultural topology was prepared in 1999 in order to determine the prevailing
organizational culture in the organization. There are four major types or this topology which are,
power culture, the role, the person or support culture and the task culture.
Power culture: In this type of culture, power lies in the hands of few people and hence
all the important decisions in the organization are taken by them. In these type of entities,
the top level management get all the benefits. Further, no decision is taken by the
employees of the enterprise (Kinicki and Kreitner, 2012).
Task culture: In task culture, the team is divided into the groups having 2 to 4 members.
The division is made based upon skills and capabilities which helps in attainment of
objectives of the entity.
Person culture: Based upon employees of the company, all the decisions are made by
the top level management. Hence, employees plays major role in the decision making
process of the organization. Further, this type of culture also aims at giving healthy
environment of working to the employees (Luthans, Luthans and Luthans, 2015). It
further helps in achieving the goals and objectives of the organization in the most
effective manner.
Role culture: The concept of role culture of Handy's topology states that every
individual has its own roles and responsibilities. Adequate amount of authorities is
provided based upon the responsibilities being given to the individuals. Further, the role
culture also specifies that every person is given equal opportunity to perform their task

effectively. Top level management ensures that coordination and cooperation is
maintained between management and employees so that the best can be delivered to the
customers.
The culture that is used by British Broadcast company is power culture which has
generated the gap between management and employees (Miner, 2015). It also increased staff
turnover ratio of the company that reduced the productivity of BBC. Moreover, the conflicts
have also arisen in the organization which had adequate impact on the functioning of the
organization.
b) Impact of culture, power and politics affected the behaviour of BBC
Power, culture and politics has a direct impact on efficiency and effectiveness of the
organization. Since, the power lies in the top level management of the company, it has direct
impact on the functioning of the entity. Employees have no right to take their own decisions
where their perspective is not considered in decision making by the top level management. It
reduces the satisfaction level of the employees (Pinder, 2014). It further reduces the morale of
people working in BBC as well. There are impact of decisions in BBC, which are as follows:
Culture in BBC: Employees working in BBC are allowed to talk to each other at the
workplace. Hence, they share only formal relationship with each other and have no role
in decision making process. The organizational culture is quite rigid in BBC and hence it
is required for the company to adopt better measures so that employees' satisfaction level
can be increased. The rights of the employees can also be protected trough this method.
Thus, complex environment for the employees should be decreased so that effectiveness
and efficiency of the employees can be increased.
Power in BBC: Managers in BBC holds the authority of decision making. Further, they
use their power in wrong manner which degrades the performance of the workers. The
authority hold by them is used in creating biased environment where decisions are taken
for the benefits of the few. It not only demotivate the employee but also increase the
situation of conflicts at the workplace. Further, due to poor policies followed in the
organization, the incidence of bully and harassment has increased at the workplace.
Politics in BBC: The power is wrongly distributed at the workplace where the managers
are allowed to take decisions. It has increased the unethical practices at the workplace.

Favouritism concept also demotivated the employees which further impacted the
efficiency and effectiveness of employees (Wilson, 2013).
Slow and gradual improvement in the culture can help the company to increase its
productivity. Participation of employees in the decision making process can improve the
condition of the organization further increasing the productivity as well. Power of distribution at
the workplace can help in better management.
TASK 2
a) Content and process theories of motivation
Motivation helps in increasing the morale of the employees. Hence, it is important for the
organization to understand and implement better strategies that can help in better management.
Content theories are considered as those theories which helps in providing a sort of motivation
with keeping in mind the necessities and targets. The process theories can be classified in the
following parts as described under :
Reinforcement theory
Reinforcement theory states the fact that one can make changes in someone's behaviour
by making use of the reinforcement, extinction etc. It acts as a sort of motivation to the people by
taking help of the rewards. So, basically rewards and punishments are being used. Rewards are
associated with the reinforcement of the behaviour and punishments with the factor of preventing
from the behaviour.
Expectancy theory
Expectancy theory makes the involvement of various mental processes and it may be
regarding the choice of a person or the need of them. It is considered as one of the most effective
theory for providing some sort of motivation. So, the BBC can also imply this by involving and
providing some motivation to the employees such as increments or incentives so that they can
also consider themselves important for the company which helps them in staying more focused
towards the work.
There are various motivational theories that can be used in order to accomplish the objectives of
the enterprise. Some motivational theories that can be used by the organization are as follows:
Maslow's Hierarchy theory
The theory focuses on fulfilling the basic needs of the employees. There basic needs are
mentioned below:
3

Psychological needs such as food, water, shelter, and air. These are basic needs without
whom survival of an individual is difficult. Hence, company focus on providing adequate
amount of pure drinking water and food in their pantry. It can act as an aid in the case of
emergency.
Further, company provide financial security to its employees through medical security
and insurance programmes. It helps in giving secure environment to the employees.
Self esteem is another need of an individual which can be giving through performance
appraisals and bonus based upon the work that has been done by employees.
Since, Maslow's theory of motivation is a hierarchy concept where the employees are
given facilities based upon their performance at the workplace. Implementation of this strategy in
the organization can help in boosting the staff members.
Hertz berg's Theory
It is a hygiene theory which plays a positive or negative role I the minds of the people . It
also leads to act as a motivational measure for the company. Hence, the two main factors that are
considered in this theory are:
Motivational factor: These factors help in increasing the efficiency of the workers at the
workplace. It also helps in attainment of the objectives of the organization. Further, it
assists in training the employees in such a manner so that their efficiency towards their
allotted work can be increased (Pareek, 2012).
Hygiene factors: Another objective is to provide healthy and safe environment ton the
employees so that they tend to motivate themselves in order to increase their efficiency
and work towards their goals. The strategy is to give them hike in their salary,
promotional opportunities and incentive schemes as well.
b) Impact of motivational techniques in order to improve the effectiveness within BBC
There are various methods by which BBC can provide encouragement and motivation to
their employees. Some very well known and popular theories are discussed as following:
Providing increments
BBC can provide some sort of increments and incentives to the employees of the channel
because by these means, they will also consider that they are important for the company. So, this
will help them in staying more focused towards the work thus the channel can gain a higher level
of productivity in a very less time.

Well interactions
A well and efficient interaction with the other employees is a must because it helps the
person in getting relaxed, thus they can stay more focused on the work. So, the BBC channel
should arrange and organise some sessions in which everyone will have to interact with each
other. It may include some means of games etc. so that every employee of the channel may
interact with each other because it helps in keeping the environment of the channel more happier
and healthier.
Appropriate adoption of motivational theories acts as best strategy in order to boost up the
morale of the employees working in the organization. It also helps in gaining the loyalty off the
employees and then from the customers as well. BBC has inappropriate distribution of powers
which reduces the efficiency of people at the workplace. It helps in bringing the lost employees
back and make them loyal towards the organization. The adoption of different motivational
techniques can help BBC in the following manner:
Implementation of Maslow's theory of motivation can help self-fulfilment of the basic
needs of the employees. Hence, employees are made to work efficiently so that they can
reach to the highest level of pyramid of motivation. It will help in increasing the
effectiveness and efficiency of the organization.
With the help of Hertz beg Theory of motivation BBC, the efficiency of the workers in
the organization can be increased. It will also help in enhancing the business operation.
BBC can extend various benefits to the employee which can motivate them to work and
also stay loyal towards the organization. Some of the methods include, incentives, hike in
the salary etc. Hecne, adoption of this technique can be the best motivational strategy for
British Broadcasting Company in order to achieve the objectives and goals of the
enterprise.
Hence, it is important for BBC to opt for these theories so that the best out of employees
can be extracted and employees are also kept satisfied and motivated towards work.
c) Role of motivation in achieving the organizational goals
Motivation plays an important role in achieving the goals of the organization. It is an
important technique to boost up their morale and attaining the objectives of the organization in
the best possible manner. The loopholes in the prevailing culture of the organization can be
determined which can help in better strategic planning (Symon and Cassell, 2012). It can

enhance the operations of the enterprise as well. Hence, some of the advantages that can be
attained by BBC while opting for motivation among the employees are as follows:
Enhancement in the dedication of employees: A motivated individual can effectively
perform its task. Hence, implementation of motivational theory, can hekl in increasing
the productivity of the employees as they thoroughly participate in the organization
functions.
Increased satisfaction of employees: BBC has to make various policies and
programmes so that employees in the organization are satisfied enough and can help the
organization to achieve its objectives.
Self development of employees: Using Hertzberg's motivation process theory helps in
improving the efficiency of the employees by making them learn new techniques that can
be used by them in their roles and responsibilities. They get the opportunity to learn
something new which motivates them to work effectively.
Improvement in efficiency: Employees in BBC also require motivation as the current
procedure followed by the organization is not effective enough. Hence, in order to
increase the satisfaction level of the employees, the company must opt for different
reward schemes, promotional schemes, etc. Further, measuring their performance time to
time and giving suggestions for improvement can also help BBC to increase the
efficiency of employees.
TASK 3
a) Explanation on different types of teams
There are various functions that are required to be performed by BBC. Hence, there is a
need to have different types of teams in the organization. Some of the important types of teams
in BBC are as follows:
Functional teams: A specific function is required to be conducted the functional and
hence these teams are formed. There is a manager under whom various subordinates
work and plan the strategy in order to achieve the team goals effectively (Hogg and
Terry, 2014). Since, BBC is a broadcasting company, it is important to have different set
of teams such as editing teams, writing teams etc. The company can divide them in
functional manner to receive effective results.
6

Problem solving teams: This type of teams is framed when any problem or issue arises
in the organization. The main role of the team member is to understand the issue and find
out the solution to the problem. The team is then dismantled as soon as the purpose of its
formation is solved. Some of the important issues that can arise in broadcasting
organization is resolving communication skills, conflict management etc.
Project teams: These types of teams are formed in order to fulfil the requirement of
certain project. There is no subordinate or manager relation. However, people belonging
to different department are brought together to achieve the prospective goal (Hassard and
Pym, 2012). Hence, formation of these types of teams in BBC can help in completion of
the projects that come up to the company. Hence, after the enterprise achieves the goals,
the team can get dismantled after it.
Virtual teams: These are the teams which are formed over the virtual network and hence
they are able to communicate using various electronic media such as, video conferencing,
phone calls, text messages etc. They are not permanently on any project. However,
collaborate as and when it is required by the organization. BBC also owns these types of
consultancy teams which are used to perform the function and give advice for better
operation management in the enterprise.
b) Ways to make the teams effective in BBC
The teams in the organization must be effective. They must be able to function in such a
manner that the goals of teams and thereby managers can be achieved effectively. Hence, there
are various aspects that are taken into consideration while forming a team. Some of them are
mentioned below:
Trust and respect: The teammates must be trustworthy and hence must respect each other.
Open communication must be initiated among the team members so that if any conflict
arises in the team can be sort out effectively.
Solve conflicts: BBC must take adequate steps so that any problem that arises among the
team mates can be sorted out. It can be done through prudent thinking behaviour and
better decision making with proper judgement.
Decentralization: It is important that some sort of responsibility and decision making
power is distributed among the individuals of the team, It helps in keeping the team mates
motivated and effective in order to achieve organizational goals.

Tuckman introduced a group development model in 1965 which stated that there are various
issues that arise in a team. These types of conflicts help the team in making appropriate decision
as per the prevailing situation. A conflict in a team goes through the following process which is
as follows:
Forming: It is the step when people from different background come together to form a
team. They may pursue different thinking however; try to meet the specific goal of a
team.
Storming: At this step, the ideas within the minds of team mates tend to conflict with
each other. Every member has its own opinion due to which conflicts arises (Robbins and
Judge, 2012).
Norming: In this step, teammates starts norming and start reaching to a common
decision, All the available ideas can be understood and based which the team reach on a
common decision.
Performing: The decision is then brought into practice. It is an important aspect of
Tuckman’s theory which leads to the successful implementation of the opinions that has
been framed by the whole team.
The process can be applied to the teams in BBC so that they can reach to a common
understanding as well as opinion.
Belbin theory helped in understanding the team roles, It is important that the person in the
team must understand the behaviour and react based upon the role being given to him. There are
nine goals that need to be fulfilled as per the definition of Belbin theory of team roles. There are
mentioned below:
Resource investigator: To optimally utilize of the available resources.
Team work: To perform in a tam and take opinions from each of the candidate in the team.

Shaper: It helps in making the teammates keep going towards achieving the goals

Implementation of these theories can help BBC in achieving is goals. It further helps in
achieving the objectives of the organization as well.
TASK 4
a) Improving the performance and productivity of BBC
Path goal theory states that the team leader or the manager must adopt the leadership style
which is best suited to the organization and the situation as well (Mobley, Wang and Li, 2012).
The BBC can adopt this type of organizational culture in order to provide high satisfaction level
to the employees which can empower employees to perform in most effective manner. BBC can
provide monetary and no monetary benefits so that the employees are satisfied and can boost up
the morale of the employees in the organization.
The path goal theory can help BBC in improving the overall efficiency and productivity of
the channel. The path goal theory can help BBC channel in understanding the employee
characteristics, environmental factors. Also, it includes the involvement of a specific leadership
style as the leader should behave in a way that all the other employees may feel comfortable
enough while working and should be able to stay open to the leader about their ideas and the
issues. The path goal theory also considers the fact that BBC should focus on a motivational
factor as if any employee of the channel gets successful in some task, then the leader should
provide then some sort of increment or incentive in order to maintain the environment of the
channel happier and healthier.
b) Main barriers in effective performance of BBC
There are different barriers that can act as a barrier in the effective performance of the
organization. Some of the issues faced by BBC are as follows:
Lack of preparation: The teams in the organization are not able to achieve the goals due
to lack of planning. Proper planning can help in better implementation of the goals being
framed. Hence, it required for the teams in BBC to have proper strategy before
implementing everything.
9
Document Page
Time constraints: Since, there are various projects that are lined up with BBC, adequate
amount of time is not give to each project. It lead to ineffective implementation of the
strategies. Further, it acts as a driving force in degrading the overall performance of the
team.
Less performance appraisal: Since, the performance appraisal given to the employees is
less as per the requirement; it has significant impact on their productivity as well (5
Barriers to Effective Performance Appraisals, 2014). The team is not able to achieve its
goals. Further, the company also compromise with the quality of work being presented to
the customers.
Lack of supervision : As it is the responsibility of the authority or the supervisor to make
aware the person of their roles and responsibilities, so in case when the supervisor lacks
in doing so, it is obvious that it will reflect in the performance of the person, so it can act
as a barrier and challenge in the overall performance of the channel. So, it should be
avoided by the channel.
Lack of discipline : Less punctuation along with less discipline is also considered as one
of the important factors that act as a challenge or barrier in the performance of the
company. So, the authorities should ensure the fact of coming in time and performing all
the activities on time so that the employees can also walk on the same path. If the
authorities will come late, the same thing will be reflected upon employees. So, it is very
essential to maintain discipline.
CONCLUSION
Based on the above report, it can be concluded that, handy’s topology helps in developing
appropriate culture in the environment which makes its functioning effective. British
broadcasting company also have to take adequate steps in order to improve the performance of
the team so that overall objectives can be achieved. Further, there are various types of teams that
can be adopted which are, functional, virtual, project and problem solving (Lyon, Mšllering and
Saunders, 2015). In the ends, various barriers that are faced by the teams in BBC are also
discussed in the report.
