Managers are responsible for managing business activities in the organization. Managers
have to look at available resources of firm and need to manage these resources. Individuals
organize plan and monitor activities in an effective manner that support in accomplishing tasks
on time. For that, manager takes support of various management styles (Shinde, 2015).
Description of management styles is given as below:
Human relationship approach
It is considered as one of the significant approaches in which higher authorities develop a
strong relationship with their employees. They believe that if there is strong bonding in between
employees and manager then it will help in smooth running of the operations. TUI adopts this
management approach that helps managers of company in creating a positive environment and
minimizing confusion at the workplace (Vinkhuyzen and Karlsson-Vinkhuyzen, 2014). Strong
relationship in between employees help in improving communication. By this way, all workers
communicate with each other properly which help in completing tasks on time with quality.
Classical management approach
It is another type of management style in which managers are more concerned for the
productivity and efficiency of business unit. They always aim to generate more profit in the
organization. Earlier, TUI was taking support of this classical management style in which higher
authorities were not paying attention on the needs of employees (Wang, Noe and Wang, 2014).
This style helped organization in raising productivity of organization. Thomas Cook is another
travel firm that adopts this management style. This sometimes create negativity among all
1

employees and it demotivates them but it is beneficial in enhancing profit and productivity of the
organization (Lo and et.al, 2015).
Contingency management style
It is another kind of approach in which managers concentrate on situations and
accordingly, they react at the workplace. They always observe condition of company and
behaviour of employees. This helps the manager of firm in allotting responsibilities to all staff
members as per their skills and improving working efficiency (Njanja and et.al, 2013).
1.2 Leadership characteristics
Leaders are the persons who lead team in the organization. They always inspire people in
the organization and encourage them to perform well at workplace. Characteristics of leaders in
TUI are described as below:
Positive behaviour: Leaders of TUI always behave with positivity in each critical
situation. They believe that if leaders behave positively then it encourages others as well
and in critical situations, all people perform well without any issue (Vinkhuyzen and
Karlsson-Vinkhuyzen, 2014). Leaders of TUI take support of democratic leadership style
in which leaders involve the employees in decision making process.
Empowerment: Leaders of TUI also have empowering capabilities. They always give
power to their employees to take decision for the welfare of business unit. Company
involves them in decision making process and take their suggestions. It makes them feel
valued and they always contribute well in accomplishing goal of the business unit
(Hashim and Wok, 2014). Empowering employees motivate workers and make them
positive towards the brand.
Communication skill: Leaders of the organization always have to coordinate well with
other workers. Leaders of TUI take support of formal meeting and email communication.
Both these mediums help leaders of t organization in circulating important information to
all employees (Njanja and et.al, 2013). Effective communication is helpful in making
people aware with their roles and responsibilities. By this way, all persons perform their
work significantly in the business unit.
