Health & Social Care is a broad term used to identify various providers who render heath
& social care. It is often misunderstood that if a person is provided with effective health care,
then, it is enough, but, a sick person also need social care in order to heal faster (Adams, 2007).

That's why, here comes the need of Health & Social Care Providers. Their duty in an
organisation is to provide effective care to people who need by making the process easier and
enjoyable, rather than tolerable. It is very vital to understand various personal values and
principles possess by these care providers in order to state the importance of their behaviour in
an health & social care unit to implement the importance of their behaviour in healing a patient.
TASK 1
1.1: Personal Values and Principles with the Principles of Support for Working in H&SC
Values refers to as those principles which help business associates to take right decisions as well
as shows the difference between what is right and wrong. It also aid to business how to act in
various situations prevailing in the market. Whereas, principles are those beliefs, fundamental
laws, assumptions and doctrine which a organization adopts in their working premises as
principles.
Rights: Rights are legal, social and ethical principles of freedom. Every organization has
their own rights as well as freedom to do anything they want.
Diversity: Personal characteristics like, age, sexual orientation, nationality, gender etc.
that trigger others to treat or behave with people as a member of a group rather then individuals.
Respect: Respect is a positive feeling for someone elicited by their qualities, or abilities.
Everyone in the society wants to treated with due respect. As well as employees working in any
organization also should be treated with respect so that they stay for longer time duration inn the
competitive world.
Personal Values is what makes a person in context to how they behave and respond to a
situation. These values plays a major role in the segment of Health & Social Care as a provider
may be facing a lot of trouble but they cannot show it on their face as demanded by their
profession. These values have a major impact on an individual in respect to Health & Social
Care.
Principles refers to the ideologies of a person as in which they believe. For example,
gravity, it is a natural occurrence, similarly, principles are natural phenomena as if a person lied
to his friend, then, the friend will not trust his friend that's a natural law. Principles plays a vital
role in this sector as if a provider will not have ethical principles, they will not be able to relate
with the pain or the care they need to do for that person(Belbin, 2004).

Personal Values and principles are two parts of a person, which are often get confused
with but they are quite different. Personal values refers to qualities possessed by an individual
whereas Principles refers to rules or beliefs governing a person. Personal Values are the choice,
which can be compromised if needed but a person never compromise with their principles.
Principles Professional Achievements: NHS does not hire people with just a degree, they need staff
with professional frontier and achievements which make them easy to adapt in NHS and
patients feel they are in the right hands as they exit the gate of NHS when they are fully
cured.
 Growth and development: It is very important for me to have a continuous growth and
development in whatever I am doing and pursuing in order to grow and learn new things
in order to achieve my goals and objectives.
Positive Values Positive Approach: The most important requisite while working for NHS is to have a
positive outlook for things. NHS needs staff that have a positive approach as it will them
in the long run.
 Effective Communication: The communication skills plays a crucial role for the
establishment of an effective relationship between patients and NHS as it will help in
decreasing the pain and make it tolerable for the patients.
As a Dental Nurse in NHS England. The main role of my work does not limit with dental
practice but involves various other departments as well.
The personal values and principles I have observed in myself while working for NHS are:
Empathetic: I have realised that I am very empathetic towards the other patients as if
they are in pain, I am not able to see it and try to erase it as soon as possible. This is better for
short term but for the long run I need to establish a professional code of conduct in order to have
a high scale graph.
Personal Behaviour in workplace: I have managed to step aside by personal behaviour
and reasons away in my workings as whatever I am feeling or stressing about does not show on
my work.

Professional code of conduct: It refers to my abilities to work with a person that does not
possess same approach towards things at workplace like me. I observed that I am able to work
with such a person as it helps in learning new things towards the same thing I know.

quality I am proud of as I don't judge
my colleagues or patients, I just do
what is required.

Personal culture and experiences are the second most important quality needed after
personal values and principles. Personal Culture and experiences are important in regarding the
behaviour of an individual as it helps in growth and development of person in their initial years
of childhood. For instance, if a black person felt discrimination in their early years, then, it may
leave an impact on them for their whole life (Belbin, R. M. Team 2010).
In the context of Health & Social Care, personal culture and experiences plays a crucial
role as it determines the behaviour of an individual in the organisation. Taking the example
mentioned earlier further, that black person may not be able to take care of a white person
efficiently due to the discrimination faced.

Health & Social Care Providers are expected to be happy and should not feel any sort of
stress due to the work load and series of activities expected from them to perform. The roles and
responsibilities performed by them includes plenty of duties from taking care of needs of patients
to answering queries of the relatives of patients, they need to maintain their compose and be
calm (Bolton, 2005). And this can only be done when an individual have certain peace in them
which can only be provided with the culture they belongs from and the experiences they faced.
The personal culture and experiences faced by me that can influence my roles in NHS:
Educational Background: It is very important in my culture and family to have a strong
educational background, which results in I getting a professional degree in order to lead my life
successfully, as presented to me. This function may have an influence on me as I may not
consider a person successful who does not have a professional degree, but, happy with what they
are doing with their life.
Supportive: My culture and norms suggest that we need to be supportive and happy with
others accomplishments. This can be turned as a major reason for me to have a stable growth in
my professional as I don't get influence with the others matter and always happy with other
people are achieving.
Childhood Experience: As I was younger, our neighbour was very rude and does not let
us kids to play outside his house, he was old and German. That is why, I have a certain
unlikeness towards Germans, especially, old as I feel I may not be able to provide intensive care
to them which I can provide to my other patients.
These instances may have either positive or negative influence on my behaviour towards
my profession as my profession involves me to be caring and helpful to my patients. Also, at
NHS wants their care providers to be professional and this kind of influence may hamper my
growth in the organisation.

Care
There are certain values I realised I lack that can be an obstacle in my growth in NHS. In
order to be more useful to NHS, there are certain values I can develop which can prove me as an
asset for NHS. Some of them are:
Integrity: A Health and Social Care provider needs to be honest and should have strong
support towards their ethical values, that is why, I need to have a strong adherence towards the
ethical and moral values so that I can treat my patients equally and protest against any unethical
activities that may surround my domain.
Soft Skills: These skills refers to development of attributes in order to enhance
interacting skills of an individual to carry out the communication effectively and efficiently.
These skills will help me in building a strong relationship with my patients and also help me in
levelling up my position in the hierarchy of NHS.

Compassion: It refers to the feeling of an individual in respect to the concern and
misfortunes of someone else. A care provider should be compassionate in order to feel the pain
of their patients, but, if these feature overlaps then it may become a problem. I feel I am way too
compassionate which is not efficient, in my timeline in NHS, I need to reduce my this ability for
the long run.
Perseverance: It refers to carry out an act despite the difficulties and delays in
establishing achievements. It is very important to have perseverance, though, I am a dental
specialist nurse, but, I participate in all the department services, which make me encountered
with various depressed and suicidal patients, which are not to tackle. At this point I need to be
more persistent in handling these patients.
These qualities will help me in providing effective and efficient services to my patients.
Also, these services will help me in my growth and development while working for NHS.

To understand the professional plan in regards to short, medium and long term goals. The
SMART model will be undertaken (Cuthbert and Quallington, 2008).
SMART Model
This model helps in establishing in goals and objectives that can be attainable and
achievable in regards to the time allotted. This model will be established in order to analyse the
various goals that needs to be implemented in the workings in order to create more efficient work
environment. It consist of five factors, namely, specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and
timely, thus, forming SMART (Fook, 2007).
