Recruitment practice in industry
The engineering industry in Australia has some important criteria for the selection of the
right candidates. Engineering as a profession has a vast scope in Australia. Engineering graduate
can apply for jobs based on the field of engineering studies they belong to. Presently, civil
engineering is the discipline that is highly in demand in the job market. However, the job market
is also significantly growing for engineering graduates from the other engineering fields such as
biomedical, electrical, chemical, industrial, electronics or chemical. An important trends that has
developed in the recent years is online recruitment. The large engineering firms provide their
recruitment advertisements online. The jobs specifications are mentioned. The interested
candidates can see these job advertisements and examine them to find whether they match their
professional competencies. The candidates with the exact required competencies apply for these
jobs. Most of the large firms have their screening processes to evaluate the online applications.
After the screening process, the final selection processes commence. An important trend in the
recruitment industry is the development of online interviews. Interview processes take place
online. Hence, interviews can take place between the HR and the candidate irrespective of city or
state boundaries. This has made possible that candidates from all across the country can be
interviewed from the same place. The engineering firms that operate in the country presently,
searches for candidates who can undertake multiple roles. Candidates that are more innovative,
adaptive, and knowledgeable and technically savvy are given more importance.
Role of networking
Networking is very important in the industry according to me. It is important as it helps
to build a strong communication network with important people from the potential recruiters.
Networking means building relationships through better communication with more people from
the industry. Having strong communication with people undertaking various job roles in the
engineering sector can help to create better knowledge of the engineering industry. This can also
help to build a personal candidate profile that can suit the requirements of the recruiters. It is
important in the engineering profession that people are aware of one’s capabilities. This also
helps to build a reputation for the candidate. However, networking is not only about rapport
building with people from the same profession. Networking is required to enhance the prospects
of professional development (Edwards & Pillapakkam, 2018). It helps to make sure that the
abilities of a person are known by many people engaged in an industry. If nobody knows a
candidate, then it can get difficult for that person to develop a professional reputation in the
industry. Hence, networking becomes very important. It also facilitates the creation of an
effective profile for any candidate. Networking is also about following the experts that lead the
industry. Professional capabilities can guide the professional development of engineers.
However, at the same time there is a need to know the exact developments that are taking place
in the engineering industry. This helps to understand the future job prospects for any engineering
graduate. It is important that a graduate seeking a good role in a multinational engineering firm,
keeps himself/herself updated about the developments in the industry. At the same time
networking helps to understand the job roles better. Gaining employment through networking
also helps to create better bond with people that are engaged in the same field.

Career Clarity and long-term and short term goals
In order to be successful as a professional in the engineering industry, it is important to
keep some short-term, medium-terms and long term goals. These goals need to be aligned with
my career development path. Initially, the short term goals would be very important in creating a
strong foundation for my career. I want to get selected as an employee in a large multinational
corporation. I want to begin my career as a junior software developer or tester. The motivating
factor would be the idea of starting my career with a great step. I prefer large multinational
organizations as they can provide me with an effective training process. My self-development
can be more systematic in this way as the larger organizations have more organized HR
management frameworks. It is important that once I get an opportunity, I use that well to achieve
all the important on job learnings that are required to excel in my professional life ahead. My
middle term goal is to become an effective performer and move on to the next levels. I consider
my medium term goals to be very important as they can bridge the gap between the short-term
and long-term professional goals that I would need to achieve. I want to gradually grow within
the engineering field. I aim to grow bigger in the organization and the industry would keep me
motivated to perform better and get promoted in this stage. First, I would like to be a senior
software developer. Then gradually I would like to get the role of an assistant team lead and a
senior team lead in gradual progression. My long-term aim is to become a senior operations
manager of a reputed engineering firm. After a few years of gaining experience as an operations
manager, my ultimate goal would be to create a software development start-up of my own.
Critical evaluation of the required skills
As an important part of my short term goals, I want to get selected as an employee in a
large multinational corporation. This is not an easy task as I would need to develop my intrinsic
abilities to attain the highest professional levels. Some of the major skills that are required to get
selected as a software developer or tester can be mentioned hence. One of the most important
skills is knowledge about the chosen field. This means that I need to be aware all the important
technical tools that would help me to get selected for the job. The second most important aspect
is applicability (Simpson, 2018). I would need to apply what I have been able to learn to solve
actual problems. Another much important skill required is communication effectiveness. I need
to develop effective levels of communication within myself to develop my prospects in this
professional field. A significant requirement is the development of creative and innovative
attributes. Without being innovative, one cannot develop the attributes that are most important in
this profession. There are also other important capabilities that need to be developed like ethical
outlook, time management and organization. In regards to the required skills, I can say that I
have a certain degree of expertise in using the various software and tools. I have higher
knowledge about how to implement these in order to gain better results in the professional field.
Additionally, it is important that greater emphasis is provided by myself in understanding the
nature of problems that tend to affect this professional field. However, I need to achieve more
development in the sphere of communication. I need to develop better levels of communication
if I want to achieve my principle professional goals. In order to get selected I would need to
communicate effectively with the HR in regards to the capabilities that I have. Ethical outlook is
already very prominent within myself. I believe that I would need to enhance my strengths
further. At the same time I would need to overcome my weaknesses.
