RE-IMAGINING WORK AND ORGANIZATIONS 1
Introduction
Governing a team or group is not an easy task; it requires a lot of efforts, dedications as well as
relative skills. Currently, leaders are seen as the backbone of any organization because leaders
are the person which actually explores the external business environment, prepare related vision
and mission and with the help of the team or group creates a strategy which will help them in
attaining these predefined missions and visions (Deichmann & Stam, 2015). One of the most
important traits of these leaders is that they even feel minor changes in the environment and
formulate such a plan which can offer them high productivity along with effective business
operations. Demand for innovative technology in the business environment has really increased
the challenges for the global leader to achieve their objectives with respect to this competitive
market (Alvesson & Kärreman, 2016). When it comes to social media as a business platform,
there is a maximum possibility of facing challenges in terms of risk and security directly as well
as indirectly.
Journey of effective leader in contemporary age
In every business organization leadership is always a connection with an independent ambition.
Leaders are always seen as the master of influence in the management field which not only
creates follower but also makes these people respond in the same framework as set up by these
leaders. In past time there were some cases where leaders are connected with the profit-making
and business expanding asset but in this contemporary age making profit seems to be the
secondary objective of the leaders (Seibert, Sargent, Kraimer & Kiazad, 2017). Their primary
objective of these leaders seems to just resolve the problem which is being faced by society by
providing the most innovative ideas related to technology. Same case is with the Facebook
organization which was totally based on the innovative idea to connect people from all over the
world with the help of some social platform. Mark Zuckerberg, founder, and CEO of the
Facebook organization also faced various challenges related to the contemporary age. As per
Mark Zucker Berg, it is not easy to create an effective leader because things related to business
are going through various changes especially related to technology (Hoffmann, Proferes &
Zimmer, 2018).

Technology is seen as one of the most important aspects for any business but at the same times,
these technologies are somewhere indirectly connected to various issues if not handled properly.
O Mark Zuckerberg said that there is list of challenges which are needed to be solved quickly in
order to increase the efficiency of the organization such as data interferences, harassment within
the offices and possible threats in the form of mental stress on the potential users (Shahin, 2019).
Every leader in his ongoing journey makes a lot of mistakes and learns from their mistakes.
Contemporary age has really brought uncertainty in the business world so it is very important for
any leader to understand the nature of change in order to maintain the effectiveness of the
organization.
Challenges faced by Facebook
In the traditional working concept, jealousy plays a very important role in bringing in efficacy in
the organization. Despite how close are the people with each other but a single incident of
achievement may create a little bit disappointed in another person (Turner, 2018). This issue was
realized by Mark Zuckerberg founder of Facebook as one of the biggest challenges in the
contemporary world. So, he introduces a new working structure in which they have to removed
the hierarchy structure so that employee right from the day of joining can directly approach any
members of the organization without any hesitation. CEO believes that if we really want to
understand the challenges faced by our employee it is always better to put our feet in their shoes
(CNBC, 2018). He has introduced a new pattern of sitting arrangement in all the offices in which
they have removed all the cabin system which used to be there in traditional businesses. He
believes that a cabin creates a barrier between the employees and restricts the reach and time of
the employee in conveying the challenge faced in the organization. An openwork arrangement
helps in generating a working environment which is full of cooperation and help in solving the
issue quite faster as compared to traditional pattern which is the need of this contemporary age
(Barrons, 2016).
This world of technology has really created a world of confusion where every person is blaming
each other for not able to perform well because they do not understand what to convey and how
to convey. So, CEO of Facebook introduces a new strategy to address this challenge in which a
pre-goal is already set up for the employee according to their skills and capability and no
employee is forced to take such assignment which is beyond their capability (O’Cass & Wetzels,

2018). This strategy helped Facebook to develop clarity related to the goal which helped them to
save a lot of time in just framing the real objective of the task. Another challenge in this
contemporary age is business at present time must be creative and innovative in order to remain
sustainable and this traditional pattern of working was acting as an obstacle in the way of
creativity because power related to the decision was always in the hands of the executive but not
the employees. In order to overcome this challenge, CEO of Facebook decided to empower their
employees in order to maintain the creativity and innovation in the organization. This has not
only boosted the confidence in the employees but also it helped the organization to become one
of the most innovative organizations in the world (Flyverbom, Leonardi, Stohl & Stohl, 2016).
Even they have also transformed their base objective which was connected the people from all
over the world into a completely new direction which is to offer more than just a social platform.
Another challenge in this contemporary age is that leaders of the organization have to
continuously involve in all business decision of the organization which was not possible.
According to traditional business trend involving CEO with every small decision can hamper the
time of the organization and that is the main reason for introducing manager or team leader post
in the organization (Vasconcelos, 2015). In the initial stage, Facebook also faced the same kind
of issues but CEO of this organization immediately understood the importance of this aspect.
Instead of overlooking this aspect, CEO of Facebook started involving him in every single
decision directly or indirectly. He believes that it is very significant for the team or group who is
working on some project that their leader must be an active participant in these activities because
it increases the team members’ moral along with an inner satisfaction that team members are
really important for him (Romanova, Maksimov, Andreeva & Otrishko, 2018). In addition, he
also believes that for creating something innovative it is always important to involve as many
minds as possible so that real market feasibility can be identified in order to make the innovation
impactful.
Some elements of PESTEL which are impacting Facebook business operations
CEO of Facebook realized that there are some challenges related to contemporary age which are
connected to some elements of PESTEL analysis of business and these elements are truly
impacting the working of social media platform businesses directly or indirectly. One is social
factor which is linked with the demographic exploration in which there are certain groups which

have actually displayed some kind of threat environment in order to gain personal leverage
(Wiengarten & Longoni, 2015). As per study, it has been found out that Facebook is being used
by many extremists violent group such as ISIS, Boko Haram and other terror groups as a main
platform to spread violence on the name of religion. Also, it has been found out that this podium
is used as one of the most significant tools for radicalizing the common youth on the name of
religion. In order to overcome this big challenge on global level, CEO of Facebook introduced a
new strategy with the help of their innovative technology. In this strategy, a monitoring system is
being introduced in the business operation under which a complete scan will be done on each and
every account associated with Facebook. If the management found any account linked to such
extremists group which are spreading violence in the world will be blocked and will not be given
permission to promote any kind of such events on their platform (Klievink, Bharosa & Tan,
2016).
Social media at present time is linked with the behavioural and preference display of the
society.in addition to that company are using this platform to attract potential customers to buy
their product by reading their buying behavior and patterns which is the best strategy. But
challenge comes when one company tries to defame the product of other company through their
podium by spreading false information linked to other company's product (Ditillo & Lisi, 2016).
This has really impacted the business of many corporates and they are blaming Facebook for all
this. This issue has been taken very seriously by CEO of Facebook and has introduced data
information interference on the global level to understand the real level of the information and
then allow the message to reach its global preferences.
Second element of PESTEL is technology, which has truly become a very important challenge
for Facebook on a worldwide platform. On Sept 2018, Facebook displayed a privacy issue that
has they discovered some security issues related to over 50 million user account. The attacker act
as a third party hacked the accounts and overtaken all the information present on that account. As
per CEO of Facebook, presences of bugs have helped the attacker to overtake all the account.
But there was no proof that attacker has accessed to the private message or not. Also, there is no
evidence of misusing information related to these hacked accounts (Wired, 2018). In order to
handle this challenge CEO of Facebook decided to log out around 90 million accounts of users
which include 50 million affected accounts along with 40 million accounts which can come

under the threat from these attackers. In addition to that management of Facebook has identified
the sites which have acted as the third party front for an attacker to reach into Facebook user
accounts. CEO of Facebook has also directed their management to introduce an information page
option in the accounts which will make a user aware about the current login of their account.
This will help them to understand that is there account is been used by someone else. CEO of
Facebook accepted that it was a very big learning for this organization because it was related to
the security and privacy of the user which is extremely important for this organization. For
protection, CEO has taken very strict action to remove all the present and possible bugs from
their process (Graham, 2018). Vice president of Facebook announced that they are not successful
in reaching out those groups of hackers along with their locations and may not be possible.
Instead of spending more time on searching those attackers it is better to work on more advanced
security pattern associated with the account users. After this incident, there were many threats
issued by various hacker groups to overtake account of CEO which is not possible for them now.
Now company is working with Bureau of Investigation to identify those hackers. As hackers
have not taken any action related to the information gathered from Facebook, so the investigators
are not able to connect the possible dots of the incident as per the researcher Lukasz Olejnik.
This incident has really impacted the trust of the Facebook user and many of the customers have
permanently deactivated their accounts which have cost huge loss to Facebook. CEO of
Facebook has put a lot of efforts to rebuild the trust of this portion of these customers.
In this contemporary age, every employee working in the organization has some dreams and
personal goals for their bright future. But regrettably just having big dreams are not enough to
full their goals which really impacts the productivity of the organization. Same expectation is
from employees of the Facebook organization so; it becomes one of the important challenges of
the organization to fulfill their growth expectation (Nugent, 2018). In order to fulfill this
expectation, CEO of the Facebook has a new plan under which the organization will allow their
employees to go for some startup under the support of this organization. This startup will be
financially supported by Facebook which will ensure that employees are able to enlarge their full
capability in order to fulfill their dreams with the help of innovation and creativity learning
environment. It is very common to belief that if a person remain working in the same working
environment, their experience related to that work will increase but at the same time it will

reduce their capability of thinking something creative and hence, this strategy will offer them to
move out of their comfort zone to face the challenges related to contemporary business world
(Isaak & Hanna, 2018). This will not help the employees in their professional life but also assist
them in face challenge in their personal life too. This emerges as one of the best strategies every
used by any organization to increase the overall satisfaction of their employees on a global level
in terms of their personal development as well as for career growth. It is a very general term, if
the organization will think for the betterment of the employee then there is maximum possible
that their employees will also thing in the same way. This unique thinking of CEO of Facebook
has helped this organization to recognize as one of the innovation organization in the business
world.
Creating such a big billion dollar empire is not someone's cup of coffee; it requires a lot of effort
and knowledge to understand the uncertainty of a business environment. CEO of Facebook
understood the demand pattern of contemporary age and tried to fulfill this demand with the help
of its innovative features (Tuttle, 2018). CEO of Facebook was aware of the significance of
applying a change in the organization which seems to be the most important part of sustainable
growth and Mark Zuckerberg emerged as one of the most creative leaders in the present business
world and is able to attain maintain his name in the top ten persons of the world in Forbes
magazine. CEO of Facebook believes that if the leader is truly dedicated towards the
development of his employees as well as organization, it is always better to follow a democratic
style of leadership in the organization. Democratic style of leadership helps in bringing freedom
to express in the organization which helps in eliminating the feeling of inner group and other
groups which have really impacted the growth in various organizations (Iqbal, Anwar & Haider,
2015). It can be understood with the help of LMX theory which states that employees who are in
the inner group are closer to the leader and have ample opportunity to develop for their future
growth. While employee which are to be believed in the outer group is not close to their leader
and hence get very little opportunity to bring improvement in their career path. In addition, this
theory also states that the employees which are in the inner group get more chances to express
their opinion in any business decision of the organization as compared to the outer group which
actually created a sense of inferior feel among the employees (Martin, Guillaume, Thomas, Lee
& Epitropaki, 2016). Therefore there will be maximum chances of creating a non-corporate

working environment in the organization which will surely impact the productivity of the
organizations.
According to CEO of Facebook, having creative technology, brilliant mind employees and
strategies are not enough to tackle competition challenges in this contemporary age due to the
presence of a large number of organization which is operating in the same business market along
with almost similar service offerings. In such situation, the only option for that Facebook can use
is to bring innovative business model which is very unique and can be easily copied by other
business competitors (Ghasabeh, Soosay & Reaiche, 2015). Also, the preference of consumer is
changing day by day which has disturbed the strategy of various organizations. Hence, CEO of
Facebook came up with new business model in which all the information will be gathered
according to real-time data analysis. Real-time data analysis will help the organization to
understand the current demand and buying pattern of potential customers. This will help the
organization to prejudge the expectation of the potential customers that will result in attaining
high-level satisfaction of the customer for the organization (Donate & de Pablo, 2015). This
business model has helped Facebook organization to increase its capacity to generate a better
reply to the future tendencies, technical changes, community, and financial variations, and also
offer a challenger advantage in this contemporary age of great rivalries. The modification can
also advance the productivity of Facebook which at the future end might direct this corporate
towards a long term achievement and sustainability.
Conclusion
In past, it was believed that innovation in business occurs by chance or by some incident and
business will follow the same pattern through years. But this contemporary age has changed all
such expectations of business stability. In fact, the organization which was not able to understand
the demand of this contemporary age was kicked out of the market. CEO of Facebook believes
that what was luck for the past has not become essential for the present business market, without
innovation and creative no organization can even imagine to operation in this dynamic business
environment. According to them, innovation must not be only related to the employee,
technology, and materials but it must become an important part of even business model of the
organization. Then only the organization have a maximum amount of chance to sustain for the
longer term in this world of competition. Because competition means suppressing each other in

order to gain maximum profit share in the business market and the organization which adopts
innovative strategy have maximum opportunity to explore the business market. Innovative
strategy helps them to adopt their capability according to the need of the external business
environment.
