A key skill for nurses is the ability to reflect upon their own experience and to do so with
honesty and insight into their own strengths and weaknesses. Reflecting on experience
requires you to:
· Describe what happened
· Analyse why it happened
· Make an action plan for the future
Reflection is a structured approach to the thinking that looks back on an experience or event
that has occurred. It is a cognitive activity that involves the mental process of selection,
attention and analysis in order to develop or deepen our understanding of something and
enhance our capacity to know or do something (action) differently in the future. In this
respect, reflection transforms an experience into knowledge (Knott and Scragg, 2007, p6
cited in Oko and Reid, 2012).
You will use a range of models of reflective practice:
1. Bolton’s (2005) model:
· What happened?
· Why?
· What do I think and feel about it?
· How can I do it better next time?
2. Gibbs’ (1988) model (6 stages)
· Description – What exactly happened? Give a summary of events
· Feelings – How exactly did you feel at the time? Be honest.
· Evaluation – Overall, what was good / bad about the event? What went
wrong?
· Analysis – Here you look in detail at the stages of the event. You might look
at it from different viewpoints as well, for example the client or your
colleague.
· Conclusion – Now that you have looked at the situation in more detail and
from different viewpoints, you are in a position to make a better judgement
of what happened. This stage gives you the chance to reflect on your
experience and to learn from it.

· Action Plan – Now that you have a better understanding of the event and
more insight into what happened, you can use this to improve your
performance next time something like this occurs again.

1.1 An introduction to my place of work and my duties in my employment (purpose and
core principles of work setting).
I work as a health care assistant in ABC hospital. The core duties and responsibility in the
hospital includes the providing of the required help to the doctors and then take care of the
patients after the doctors have provided them with the proper medication. I look after the
patients and tend to their requirements and provide them with the prescribed medication in
proper time.
1.2 Analyse the structure of your place of work, making reference to the skills of staff at
different levels.
In my hospital, the manager of the hospital has the responsibility of managing the hospital
working. The workers in the human resource department has the responsibility of managing
the payroll of the doctors and the health care assistants of the hospital. Various departmental
doctors have distinct skills for each department. The health care assistants of the hospital
have the skills of working with the doctors and has the unique nursing skills for tending to the
requirements of the patients.
1.3 Explain the key issues and challenges encountered by staff in the organisation.
(Consider issues such as training and continuing professional development, staffing
levels, and manager/employee/client and their family relationships, team work,
managing conflict, compassionate care etc.)
Some of the key issues that are faced by the management of the hospital are the challenges of
training that includes the differences in the culture, different generations in the same
workplace, and the work experience of the various trainees that makes it difficult to find a
common ground for training. The levels of staffing of the hospital has some key issues like
the misuse of a highly experienced health care assistant in the lower levels, and the promotion
of the inexperienced health care assistants and the staff.
1.4 Evaluate your own contribution to an area of work in the organisation.
I contribute to my area of work in the organization by helping the doctors to properly manage
the patients and the tend to the requirements of the doctors as soon as possible and then look
after the patients and the fulfilling of the requirements of the patients quickly so that they do
not face any kind of issues. I also provide the required help to the colleagues whenever it is
required and perform my duties as the health care assistant in most effective manner.
2.1 Evaluate the development of your own skills and knowledge through your work
practice. Make reference to at least three aspects of your own development.

I have achieved development in my area of the skills and I have gained significant
knowledge about the working of the procedure of the hospital. When I first started working
here I faced several difficulties in providing the required help to the doctor quickly and did
not know about the various medical practices. In meantime, I learned about the various small
works like doing anaesthesia and provide the correct medication to the patients in correct
time and in some emergencies, provide the first aid to the patients quickly.
3.1 Critically evaluate an experience at work using Gibbs’ (1988) model and explain the
benefits of reflective practice. For example, identify how reflective practice has been
used to identify strengths and areas to develop in your own performance.
The experience that I faced in the recent times was the requirement of providing
medication to the patients at the correct time. Some of the benefits of reflective practice are
that it helps in tracking my daily progress and the understanding of the new skills and
knowledge that is necessary for developing with positive intent. I have learnt to identify the
situation quickly and learnt to provide the appropriate solution for the problem easily. The
reflective practice helps in understanding any situation and be prepared with an appropriate
solution for the situation if it happens again. It helped in increasing my self awareness and it
helped in developing the creative thinking skills and helped me in engaging in more duties in
the workplace. The reflective practice helps me in supporting the increasingly meaningful
discussions that are pertaining to the career development.
3.2 Explain the benefits of keeping a reflective record at work. You must draw on
specific incidents and experiences at work where you believe you have benefitted from
reflecting on your own practice.
I have been benefited from keeping a reflective record in my workplace. In one
situation, when my colleagues was facing a problem regarding the medication to the patients,
I helped her with providing the correct medication to the patients in the right time to save the
life of the patient. I provided her with the help as I had faced this situation earlier and had put
the correct response to the situation in my reflective record.

The incident that occurred was that my colleague did not provide the correct medicine to the
patients. This created serious damage to the health of the patient and he suffered from that
immensely. I did not have any knowledge about the situation and could provide the required

Date of experience/incident: 16/09/2018
on this day an incident occurred where there was a miscommunication among the health care
assistant and the doctor that led to serious damage of the patient. The doctor told the health
care assistant about the medicated schedule and the health care assistant heard something
else. I learnt that the written prescription must be taken from the doctor that would eliminate
any kind of miscommunication.

Date of experience/incident: 18/12/2018
On this day, there was an incident where there was a patient missing from the general ward.
This situation created troublesome situation in the hospital and later it was found that the
proper documentation was not done of the patient and was admitted to the wrong section of
the hospital. The hospital authority could not find the patient in the general ward as the
patient was sent to the emergency ward. I learnt from this situation that the proper
documentation is required to be done before admitting the patient in the hospital.

On this day, there was a failure in monitoring the health of the patient. The doctor advised
one of the health care assistants of the hospital to provide the medication to the patient but the
health care assistant did not fulfil his duty correctly. I learnt that the proper monitoring of the

Date of experience/incident: 07/08/2018
On this day, there was a serious issue of communication failure between the hospital
authority and the ambulance. One of the patients was supposed to be transferred on this day
but the ambulance of the hospital was not properly notified about the transfer and the
ambulance did not reach at the right time and the transfer was delayed. I learnt from this
situation that the proper notification is required to be provided to the ambulance so that the
patients do not face any issue regarding the transfer.

9. Model: Gibbs’ (1988) model
Date of experience/incident: 19/06/2018
On this day an incident occurred when that stated that the test results of one of the patient was
lost. I was blamed for this incident as I was tasked with providing the test result to the doctor.
I misplaced the record of the patient and it caused serious issue with the hospital authority. I
learnt from this situation that the records of the patients is required to be maintained properly
and it has to be provided to the doctor at the right time.

Date of experience/incident: 15/01/2019
On this day, the family of one of the patient claimed that the family was mistreated and was
not allowed to admit their patient in the hospital in the best quality service. This led to the
serious issue with the hospital authority. I learnt from this situation that none of the patient
must be mistreated inside the hospital and the families of the patients are required to be
properly conveyed about the situation and make them understand about the condition.
