TOPIC - Analyse the impact of discrimination at workplace: A case study
of ASDA
Chapter 1: Introduction
Overview of the Research
Workplace discrimination is been considered as one of the crucial issue, which is face by
the number of employees everyday within most of the business organisations. Over the years,
discrimination at workplace has been a vital subject to study because it has not only impacted
upon the motivation level of staff members but also affected productivity and the profitability of
various business organisation that are dealing in today’s National and international market. Also,
there are many cases that came in front of international business organisations where existing
staff members humiliates the new members that has been recruited within the company (Ayalon
and Tesch-Römer, 2017). Along with this, there are many cases that also came in front where
many of the employees sue to the company and ask for their rights in order to vanish the
discrimination related situations at the word station. In the same way, Asda which is one of the
famous retailer in all over the world has gone through different cases where employees price
discrimination and relation to different terms like race, religion, on the salary basis and many
more other factors. Present research project will focus on different ways through which all the
discrimination related situations can be reduced to minimal or to remove them from the company
that is ASDA.
Rationale of the Research
Vital reason behind conducting investigation on this research topic is because various
employees of international companies like ASDA, Tesco and many more has faced ample
number of issues which affected not only their performance level but impacted upon the
motivation level as well of the overall company. Another reason for performing research on the
chosen topic is because every single employee has his or her rights while performing different
tasks whenever the person gets recruited in the company no one can discriminate among
different factors like religion, race, age, salary, or any other factor which is coming under the
discrimination element (Cobb, 2017). Another reason that came in front of conducting
investigation for this topic is the future aspects of the researcher as it will help both the
investigator and the readers to analyse the importance of understanding the behaviour of every

single individual and to know or understand the factors that lead to discriminate them from
others or can be a part of humiliation.
Research Aim
“To understand the concept of discrimination at workplace and how to prevent from
discrimination. A study on ASDA”.

Chapter 2: Literature Review
Problems of discrimination at the workplace
Discrimination at workplace can be due to several factors which one has to analyze and
then only a structural problem solution theory can be formulated. In several places discrimination
is usually due to the colour or cast of the person which can lead to a higher scale of
discrimination that is avoiding to talk to search people on making them uncomfortable in the
working environment so that eventually it bleed them to leave the job or get frustrated and get
deprived in their life. This is basically the work of the manager and the human resource team to
analyse or react to such situations. Basically they have to develop a structural unit where in case
of any search mishappenings occurred in the environment of workplace one can be very flexible

to directly talk to their seniors or their human resource managers so that any of such kind can be
avoided and the person who should actually be punished for their discrimination can be Caught.
Organizations are bound to comply with legislative requirements and have recruitment
targets and bring out various workplace programs outlawing discrimination such as the Racial
Discrimination Act in the UK and Sex Discrimination Act 1975 In the United Kingdom. There
are several sets of rules and principles which are created by judiciary and by the government
which will help organizations to stabilize a non void any type of discrimination. It is effective to
put on such rules to be non negotiable with all the employees and in case of practicing any of
such things which are leading for a person to think that they are being discriminated is against
the law and can be punishable as per their effects on the person discriminated. These are usually
always provided in the contract of employees before they sign of to work with the organization
and it is clearly stated in case of higher results of discrimination done by any of the employee to
other one can even lead to a huge amount of fine or termination from their post as well as if the
judiciary takes up the call it can lead to different results is well. Usually such kind of behaviour
should be avoided and people who promote such kind activity shall be put down and it is the
main purpose of any human resource manager in a company.
Importance of stopping the discrimination for a good functioning of the organization in ASDA
According to Flake, (2016),Importance of stopping or hindering any kind of abnormal
activities which are going over in any work place like Asda which is leading to discriminating
and employee over there is the main importance of working. It is crucial for each structure
making a company to create a balance of creative minds as well as balanced amount of people so
that it does not turn out to be greater responsibility for them to manage. This can many times
cause issues and non violated subjects as two people can describe their discrimination through
their racist jokes and things which can sometimes cannot be justified or put on to be subjective in
name of discrimination. To avoid such circumstances one should be very clear and prospective
about what they think and talk about their employee in the workplace as well as to create and
maintain a balance by themselves to generally avoid any of such circumstances.
There are many rules and principles which are created by the judiciary for people who are
supporters of discrimination or discriminating people on the basis of their caste, colour, race,
religion, any abnormality they have. Stopping discrimination is also helping to function more
smoothly and with better principles so that the employees are not affected to their personal levels

and have a good state of mind for working within a place which can eventually leads up to
achieving all the targets created by the company. Indeed it is beneficial for them to help and
create a balanced surrounding for them so they are stable in their working zone and can help or
reach out each other in the time of crisis as well as such unethical situations can be avoided by
following some certain principles by everyone. Good functioning can only appear in any
structure of a workplace is when each and every employee is into good communication and
healthy prospective of mind. This is actually the duty of a human resource manager and his or
her team to create such balance.
Ways to defend ourselves against discrimination and how to apply for right in the workplace
According to Flake, (2017), There are many ways that may prevent discrimination at workplace
and some of these are presented underneath:
Educating all the workers about discrimination and how they can effectively understand
the situation where a person can discriminate or any company e action would lead them
to go through different issues in relation to discrimination will help HR manager in
delivering the right information.
Another way of encouraging workers is through delivering them with appropriate
respects considering the differences which can be anything from the rice, religion, age, or
any other factors.
It should be clearly stated to each and every employee working at any stage of the
workplace to be very consistent about not breaking several rules and principles which are
created to protect people from getting discriminated in their working environment of
Asda.
Recommendations on discrimination to increase organization performance
Based on the information given by Johnson and Joshi, (2016), There are many recommendations
that can be given in relation to discrimination which may help an organisation like Asda and its
performance level and some of these are given underneath:
It is recommended that every single organisation like Asda to deliver this information to
their employees where they need to respond to every single evidence or complaints of
inappropriate behaviour.

Another recommendation that can be given in present contacts is to train supervisors
along with the managers so that they can respond to various situations in relation to
discrimination at workplace.
Also it is recommended to an organisation like Asda to effectively review its policy in
relation to discrimination so that right actions can easily be taken into consideration in
much effective and efficient manner.
Away with this, developing and effective workplace policy which prohibits
discrimination would deliver appropriate rights and information to staff members
considering the cases and this will help in reducing such cases as well.
Chapter 3: Research Methodology
Men are born curious” and this component is built within every individual. Research helps them
in doing so. Research is said to be an activity through which researcher tries to find out solutions
in a systematic manner (Jones, Finkelstein and Koehoorn, 2018). So, Research Methodology,
provides scholars with a framework within which they are supposed to perform their activities.
There are some scientific tools and techniques which are required to be adopted by the researcher
so that further process of gathering information, assembling and evaluation of data can be carried
out.
Research Philosophy
Philosophy is believed to be an idea or thoughts for doing a particular task or action, because
people with different mind set can do the same task differently. In relation with doing a research,
there are certain criteria or set patterns which includes socially constructed views and needs to be
followed. Thus, research philosophy is said to be a way under which all the data and information
are gathered analysed and used. Moreover, there are mainly two types of research philosophies
and these are explained below for better understanding.
Positivism: It is one of the types of research philosophy and stick to the knowledge that are
factual and is only gained through observation. Besides that, researcher is confined to only gather
information and interpret the same but findings are quantifiable (Macdonald and Levy, 2016).
Therefore, positivism helps researcher with questionnaire and hypothesis which can be further
tested and valid conclusion can be drawn.
Interpretivism: This is related to the philosophical idealism and generally based on
naturalistic approach. Thus, it is based on social science and entirely different from positivism.

Scholar who follows interpretivism have some sort of knowledge regarding the field on which
they want to explore.
In context with this research, researcher has used positivism because it provides with a
logical and rational approach. Along with this, scholar believes that through positivism they can
provide better explanation of human actions.
Research Approach
While doing a research, researcher can frame broad assumption regarding how to collect
data, process it and evaluate a valid conclusion (Manuel and et. al., 2017). Research approach,
deals with the proper planning and procedure including certain steps so that overall decision can
be made for-example: what kind of research methods should be taken, whether sources should be
from primary or secondary source of data.
Deductive: Main purpose of this research approach is to find answers that was formulated
or came into the mind of the investigator at the start of the research. Thus, it provides with an
insight of observation like what things are to be included or rejected. Therefore, deductive
approach generally starts with a hypothesis and further helps in achieving all its objectives and
aims by considering hypothesis.
Inductive: This approach starts with collecting information which is regarding to topic
chosen. Observation is the prime function which is being performed so that positive outcomes
can be evaluated. Later on, on the basis of this researcher develops theories and come to a
conclusion.
With regard to this research, purpose of choosing deductive approach is because it provides
with ample of information within a short period of time. Generally, most of the concept in this
are measured in quantitatively for which further helps in developing a relationship between
variables and concepts.
Research Strategy
For executing any kind of activity, it is required that an individual develops a strategy so that on
the basis of framework entire task can be performed. Thus, it is essential that researcher follows
single contextual setting so that better strategy can be developed. In relation to this research,
investigator has used survey questionnaire because this focus more on developing better
understanding of what employees think and believe (Medina, 2017). Along with this,
