Research Methodology
Research design
Research design can be defined as the combination of methods and number of procedures
which can be used by a researcher while collecting, analysing and measuring the variables which
are specified in research problem. It is also referred as a framework of various methods and
techniques which can be chosen by a researcher in order to combine different components of the
research in a reasonable manner so that a particular research problem is effectively handled by a
researcher. There are three types of research design such as Causal, Descriptive and experimental
(Flick, 2015). Causal research is also known as explanatory research which can be used by a
research to investigate cause and effect relationships. For determining the causality it is essential
for a researcher to predict the variations within the variable which is assumed to change another
variable and then measure the change of the other variables. Descriptive research design can be
used by a research when a researcher wants to describe the characteristics of the population but
it normally does not answer when/why/how the characteristics occurred. Experimental research
design is considered as the most appropriate and accurate design of research which relies on the
statistical analysis to prove and disprove the hypothesis. In this research, researcher will choose
descriptive research as it will help the researcher to describe as well as validate the hypothesis or
objectives.
Research Philosophy
Research philosophy can be referred as a belief related to the way the data or information
related to any phenomenon is gathered which can be analysed and used by a researcher. It can
also be referred as development of knowledge as well as the nature of knowledge and also
defines the set of thoughts, beliefs and assumptions which kept in to consideration in order to
collect the data. It is a broad topic which covers all the aspects of data which is gathered by a the
researcher for analysis. Research philosophy can be divided into two major categories such as
positivism and interpretivism. Philosophy of positivism is based on the opinion that pure
knowledge can be gained by proper observation which may include the measurement and
trustworthiness (Alvesson and Sköldberg, 2017). Researcher adopting positivism restricts the
role of a researcher in collecting data and its interpretation to achieve the aim of the research.
Interpretivism philosophy allows the researcher to make the interpretation of the various
elements of study which integrates the human interest within the study. In this research project,
Document Page
researcher will use philosophy of positivism which will help the researcher to interpret the data
findings effectively.
2
Document Page
Research type
It can be divided into two major categories which includes quantitative as well as
qualitative research types. Qualitative research type is most common form of research type
which is used by the researcher in their researches. Such types of researches are quite
exploitative which can be used to cover opinions, trends and thoughts and also allows a
researcher to make a deep research. Qualitative research is mainly used for developing an
understanding and provides a deep description of the problem. Qualitative research is a type of
research which can be used by a researcher to deal with logic, objectives (Walliman, 2017). It
mainly focuses on the numerical values and which tries to quantify the problem also allows a
researcher to provide proper insights to different aspects of the problem. Quantitative research is
also referred as systematic investigation of a phenomena by collecting quantifiable data and then
preforming mathematical, statistical or computational techniques. In this research researcher will
use quantitative research as this the best way for gathering an information related to research
problem and provide and effective solution to the research problem. B The other ratin ale for
performing the quantitative research is that it provides researcher an ease in analysing the results
nad helps them in making suitable decisions.
Research approach
Research approach may be defined as set of plans and procedures which consists of broad
assumptions in order to collect and interpret the data. Research approach can be divided into two
major categories known as inductive research approach and deductive research approach.
Inductive research approach begins with observations and theories which are established at the
end of the research process which is mainly derived from the outcomes of the observations. If
research uses an inductive research approach it shifts the data from specific to generalised form.
In this type of a research approach researcher has to begin with some concept the results in
emergence of theory from data (Cuervo‐Cazurra and et.al., 2017). On the other hand deductive
research approach mainly focuses on the hypothesis that is typically based on pre-existing
theories which also involves designing of the strategies to test the hypothesis. Deductive research
philosophy can also be defined by the means of hypothesis which is derived from the different
propositions of various theories. In this research, researcher will apply deductive research
approach which will help a researcher to find the impact of globalisation on the corporate
structure of Next Plc.

Sampling
Sampling may be defined as a process of selecting a small section from a wider
population and the results of research are based on the sample size chosen. It simply means
choosing representatives from the entire population. It is important for a researcher to choose a
proper sample size for the research which can increase the validity of the research. Sampling can
be divided into two main categories such as probability sampling and non-probability sampling
techniques. Non-probability sampling is a type of sampling technique in which a researcher does
not give a population equal chance of participation (Wildemuth, 2016). Major characteristic of
non-probability sampling is that researcher can choose sample which is based on the subjective
nature of the research. It is also referred as non-random sampling in which population does not
get equal chance of participation. In probability sampling technique, researcher uses probability
sampling where the representatives or sample are selected on the basis of probability. In
probability sampling technique population gets equal chance of participation in the research. .
In context of present study investigator has applied the non-probability sampling technique.
Researcher has selected participants using the convinient sampling technique.
t sample size will 15 managers of Next Plc. In this research, researcher will chose random
sampling technique for this research project as every participant gets equal chance for
participation within the research which will increase the quality of research.
Data collection
Data collection is an effective method as it helps in collecting, measuring, identifying,
analysing and evaluating the data collected to fill the gaps on the particular subject matter. Data
collection helps in in- depth understanding and gaining new insights which helps in widening the
knowledge on the particular subject matter. Data collection helps in finding the answers to the
various research problems in an effective and efficient manner.
Data collection ca be further classified into primary data collection and secondary data
collection. Primary data collection has been used by the researcher, as it is an effective source
through which data is collected for the first time. It is a first hand information which is collected
by the researcher for more in- depth knowledge on the particular subject matter. Data can be be
collected through surveys, interviews and questionnaire. Researcher will collect primary source
of data which will be in the form of questionnaire because it helps in collecting fresh facts on the
basis of current market situation of business and business environment. Primary source of data
4
Document Page
collection through questionnaires will help researcher to analyse the impact of globalisation on
the corporate structures of large multinational companies and the major challenges faced by the
retail industry. Primary data will be collected from 15 managers of the Next plc with the help of
questionnaires. Questionnaire will be distributed to participants through E-mail. Secondary
information related to the subject will be chosen using the books, journal, magazines, online
articles etc.
Data analysis
Data analysis is the process of analysing the data when it is being collected which can
help in providing a proper conclusion at the end. It involves summarising, modelling and
transforming the information with an aim of discovering useful information and deriving a
conclusion from it. It also includes applying tools and techniques in order to evaluate and
describe the gathered data (King and Mackey, 2016). Data can be divided into two categories
such as statistical and thematic. Thematic is the most common form of analysing a data as it
helps in identifying the patterns of meaning of data to provide solution to research problem.
Statistical is considered as a part of data analytics which involves collection of data, analysing
and interpreting it. In this research, researcher will choose thematic analysis which will allow
researcher to identify the impact of globalisation. This is the best method to analyse data for the
present study as all the quantitative attributes are addressed by executing this research study.
Ethical Considerations
Ethical consideration are very important for a researcher to follow and it increases the
quality of a research project. In present research, researcher will maintain the confidentiality of
the respondents and respondents will be chosen based on their willingness. Also, researcher will
prevent unauthorised access of data and its misconduct.
