Part-A: Case Study Report
Introduction of the chosen organization
The tourism and hospitality industry provides employment to a large population around
the world. It is a sector that is ever growing and has a significant potential for future
development. The organization chosen is Stafford hotel, a five star hotel situated conveniently in
the heart of the city of London. The hotel offers world class five star facilities to the customers. It
has two renowned bars and restaurants, The American and The Game Bird. It is one of the best
hotels in London to start one’s career. The organization is a well reputed company in the tourism
and hospitality industry. The large employment possibilities lie in the leadership roles of
departments that are present in the organization.
Investigation of the required skills
Currently, the organization is looking for people to work in various roles for the both the
bars and restaurants, The American and The Game Bird. The restaurants are looking for
energetic individuals that are guest oriented, passionate about their work, possess efficient
leadership skills and willing to work to their full potential. The job openings are for restaurant
manager, waiter, cooks, house workers and other important positions within the organization. It
is important to understand that the career prospects in the hotel are good for enhancing the
performance potential of the workers. The jobs require dedicated service and effective job
orientation. The restaurants work late into the night, hence the candidates that the organization is
demanding must be willing to work for long shift durations. It is important to consider the job
role seriously and only people that want long term growth in the tourism and hospitality industry
are invited for the various posts. The candidates that the Stafford is wanting need to be well

organized above everything else. The hotel is looking for enthusiastic individuals that are willing
to learn, grow and develop essential leadership skills.
Evaluation of benefits professional and personal development
Undertaking a personal developmental plan becomes very important in this case for me.
My name is Andrescu Mihai Marian and I want to enter the organization as a manager. It is
important for me to grow in the hospitality industry. Without a systematic and effective
developmental plan this would not be possible. It is important for me to develop my skills first as
a manager. Moving forward, I would have to learn more about the work of a restaurant manager.
Then I would need to move on to the other essential level of the organization. In the current
global employment scenarios organizations are relying more on recruiting people that have
sufficient knowledge of their industry. In the hospitality industry this has become very important.
This is largely due to the fact the industry is growing at a very fast pace. Personal development is
required to assess ones capabilities in the context of the industry norms that one would need to
abide by during the course of their work (Goldie 2016). It thus becomes much important that
people develop a systematic plan in the industry that can help them to enhance their skillset with
regards to all the essential work they need to do. The self-evaluation models that I used were the
self-evaluation maintenance model. In this model a person watches a person that is very close to
him/her in order to continue with the development. In this case my sibling is the one that I tend
to follow. Another self-evaluation model that I tend to use is a self-assessment model. I will
assess my strengths and weaknesses and focus on utilizing the same towards evolving as an
effective leader.
Learning theories for personal development

3SELF-ASSESSMENT
The learning theories provide essential outlooks in regards to how a person can learn and
grow in any given environments. In the organizational environment, given the context of the
hospitality industry, the application of learning theories become very important. Hence, it can be
understood that learning the various things that are connected with the profession and growing
along with the organization at the same time are both important. In this profession a behaviorist
and cognitive constructivist learning approach can be the best suited (Illeris 2018). Given the
initial task of a manager, it is imperative that many different customer management situations
would be faced. The task of a restaurant manager requires one to be essentially focused towards
all the different aspects of managing restaurants. Behaviorist learning approach is based on
conditioning oneself in accordance with the experienced situations (Bada and Olusegun 2015).
Added to this cognitive learning refers to the development of deeper ideas of what have been
learnt on the basis of what is already known. Both this learning processes would help in
individual growth in the hospitality industry. The reason for this being the large number of
scenarios, people and areas that a person is exposed to. It is important to note that learning is
essential for growing and developing in the industry. The job roles are different and the
situational effects on the roles demand greater flexibility of managerial roles (Shamim et al.
2017). Hence, for effective development of the individual in the industry it becomes much
important that learning oriented development of leadership skills are always the focus of
candidates.
Critical evaluation of personal abilities
The personal abilities that I have are goal oriented behavior, positive mindset, quick
learning abilities, the propensity towards learning more and application of technical knowledge
to enhance performance. I am a motivated individual who is willing to learn and grow in the job

environment that is provided by the organization. I am also a flexible worker, which means that I
would not have any issues working for longer shifts. My practical knowledge applicability helps
me to apply my knowledge to the most important areas of my job role. I have essential leadership
capabilities that can help me moving forward to become an effective leader. The restaurant
manager needs to recruit, train and supervise staffs. Other important roles are planning, ensuring
compliance, maintaining stock levels. These tasks require people to be effective in their
leadership skills.
Best developmental approaches
The best development approaches would be cognitive, behavioral and self-development.
Cognitive development would help a person to acquire knowledge from around his environment
in the industry. It is also important to develop cognitive skills as it facilitates multidimensional
development. Behavioral changes would help a person to understand the value of the things that
one has been able to learn. This approach would be focused towards systematically improving
the behavioral aspects of development. The changing behavior of the person would help to shape
the person in the context of the available situations of the working environment (Jones, Hillier
and Comfort 2016). Self-development is always important it is the main area for the
development of any individual. Hence, without proper self-development, it becomes very
difficult to tackle the basic problems that may arise in the work environment.
Implications
The implication that can be derived from self-assessment in the context of the given
organization and the industry is that positive growth oriented approaches are required. In
essence, it becomes very important in the hospitality industry that essential motivated approaches

are utilized to tackle all the significant problems that affect people. It becomes important for me
to learn, adapt, perform and grow with the organization at the same time.
Part-B: Development Plan
Goals and Objectives
The goals and objectives are focused towards optimally improving the leadership skills in the
hospitality industry. The major objective is to acquire the required skills to enter a reputable
organization in the hospitality industry in a management position. Strafford Hotel I believe is an
organization that can help me to become a sought after leader in future in the Hospitality
industry. Moving forward the goal will be to become effective in the designated job role of a
manager. The objective after achieving the same would be to take the leadership role further and
enhance effective competence. A specific aim would be to optimally develop the potential for
performing in extreme pressure situations. The industry is very much affected by pressure
especially in the peak seasons. Hence, coping with pressure is an important learning, taking into
consideration the entirety of the professional life in the given industry. Another significant
objective would be to attain systematic promotion within a short span of time. Lastly, the
significant objective is to attain high levels of expertise in the industry.
Targets
ď‚· Acquiring the required knowledge, skills and competency levels to get easily selected as
restaurant manager in the organization of my choice
ď‚· Performing in accordance with the norms of the job role and complying with all the
factors that govern the managerial role

6SELF-ASSESSMENT
ď‚· Understanding the standpoints of the higher management, supervisors and peers in the
organization and developing self-standard in accordance of the same
ď‚· Developing essential levels of communication with the peers and the staffs at the
Strafford hotel
ď‚· Managing the staffs of the restaurant and ensuring proper utilization of resources
ď‚· Learning all the important aspects connected with the job profiles associated with the
organization
ď‚· Getting promoted to the rank of the restaurant manager within a span of one to two years
ď‚· Developing skills for developing optimal levels of skills to manage people, resources and
business requirements in the hotel
ď‚· Achieving expertise in the managerial aspects that govern the hospitality industry within
the span of two to three years
Strategies
The strategies for becoming an effective restaurant manager becomes very important for
me at this point in time. Merely being recruited as a restaurant manager in a restaurant within a
larger fife star enterprise would not serve the purpose of my life. It is important to grow
systematically as an effective leader. In future I want to become a senior restaurant manager.
However, very fast growth may sometimes affect the developmental prospects of individuals.
Hence, it becomes important that I grow taking into consideration essential learning that I am
able to harness in the process. As mentioned previously a systematic cognitive and behavioral
development process would be used as a growth oriented strategy focused on leadership skill
development. Cognitive development would help to acquire knowledge from around the
environment in the industry. Behavioral changes would help to understand the value of the things

that one has been able to learn and apply the same towards further growth (Yumatov et al. 2017).
Self-development is always important it is the main area for the development of any individual.
The strategy will incorporate development of effective communication. Communication becomes
necessary as it helps to establish strong and lasting relationships with people that can help me to
grow into an optimally efficient person. The overall strategy will be to learn, understand, apply
and grow at each level of the organization.
Learning outcomes
ď‚· To be able to understand the ground level issues that a person can face in the hospitality
industry
ď‚· To be able to understand the implications of knowing the factors that govern the
profitability of the industry
ď‚· Developing communication levels that would be sufficient to deliver high levels of
leadership to guide subordinates and interact effectively with peers and managers
ď‚· To develop practical knowledge of the working of the organization as well as the industry
ď‚· To develop skills that help to establish me an optimally effective leader
ď‚· To develop knowledge about all the significant areas of the organizational productive
areas
ď‚· To apply the knowledge gathered to real time professional situations that affect me at
various times in my career
Training requirements
The training requirement in this job is very much. Firstly, the leadership management
factors need to be learnt. This is mainly because the entire work is based on efficient

management of staffs, resources and customers. It is important to understand that the
organization would help an individual to grow only when the individual has sufficient available
knowledge about the factors that tend to guide the performance of the organization. Secondly,
customer service oriented leadership management has to be learnt. This requires the person
involved in service understand how to communicate with staffs, suppliers, higher management
and customers (Yang and Wong 2018). Thirdly, as the employment would initially take place in
a restaurant, it is important that I am well trained on the available food and beverage and staff
capability in the given organization. Fourthly, the manager should be aware of the customer
demands and the staff capabilities. Fifthly, communication training is required to enhance the
communication levels required as a waiter is also a customer service executive.
Part-C: Reflection and review of interview
The interview that was given was for the job role of a room service executive at a luxury
cruise. The job role asked for dynamic and flexible young worker without any problems with life
at the sea. The job role required a person with knowledge of customer service.
Reflections
Key strengths and weaknesses of the interview process
The key strengths that I witnessed through the interview process was the smooth flow of
the interview. The interviewer was a knowledgeable person with whom it was very easy to have
good and free communication. The interviewer also acknowledged my knowledge about the

9SELF-ASSESSMENT
hospitality industry. The interview was very formal in tone. The interviewer directly spoke about
the requirements of the job rather than beating around the bush. An essential weakness of the
interview process was that the interviewer never mentioned completely about the exact job roles
that I needed to take up as the room service executive. At times he completely ignored a given
question and ventured into irrelevant content. It became very difficult for this reason for me to
understand about the actual requirements of the job. The interviewer did spoke about the cruise
liner and its history but it became very difficult to understand the carrier prospects in the
industry. The interviewer was keener to know about the qualification and knowledge I possessed
rather than giving any hint of what I needed to achieve to perform well in the industry. After a
point of time the interview became very one sided. Another issue that affected the interview was
that I was unable to provide a proper introduction of myself. The interview process became fast
and I was unable to express my knowledge, aspirations and growth orientation in a better way.
The interview process lost much of its smoothness towards the end as the questions and answers
both became unclear. As a participant in the interview I lost much of the enthusiasm which I had
while going for the interview.
Evaluation of the challenges and obstacles faced
The obstacles that I faced were generally related to being unable to provide my 100% in
the interview. In the beginning the interview process was smooth. However as the interview
commenced, I began to feel that there was very low scope for truly understanding the
requirements for the job. I became confused after a time in relation to the prospects of having a
good career in the job role and in the cruise ship. I believe that the interviewee did not give much
importance to know my own expectations in regards to the job. It gradually became very difficult
for me to express myself. In the beginning the questions were very much open ended with the

interviewee asking more about myself and my future aspirations. However, the questions
towards the later part of the interview became much closed ended. The overall interview process
became very difficult to proceed with. The structure of the interview was not regular and towards
the end I faced serious issues while trying to communicate with the other person. I gradually
became very uninterested about the job prospects for which the interview was being taken. The
interview had to be ended as I understood much abruptly. It has to be said that the interview
could have been different if not for some miscommunications and improper presentation of facts
from the end of the interviewer. However, my weakness became my lack of effective means to
communicate. This was a significant issue that I faced. I learnt that in order to provide a good
interview both the interviewer and the interviewee are in level plain. My skills at giving
interviews should improve. I would like to be more confident, more effective and with higher
levels of interpersonal communication skills.
