OVERVIEW
The case study which is taken into consideration is based on the Film Up In The Air. This
is a story about a new co-worker who has stopped the constant travelling of the corporate
downsizer Ryan Bingham. In this Ryan needs to understand who is needed to be fired by him.
Thus, there are different ways in which he analyses who should be fired. In this film it has been
show that how differences in the generations develop conflicts in the workplace. The focus of
this project will be on this section of the film and this case study uses the survey of Ernest and
Young for revealing the different strengths and weaknesses of the generations.
Social identity at work
Practice, theories and politics of the organizational psychology
In this case study the Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is somewhat applicable as this theory
talks about how the needs of the individual keeps them motivated in an organization. These
needs influence the psychological behaviour of the individuals. As per Maslow the basic needs
of an individual is their physiological needs then comes safety and then relationships in the
organization and the last of the needs are the self-esteem and their acceptance in the
organization. In this case study there are differences in the generations of the employees which
affects their motivation in the organizations (Zerfass and et.al., 2018).
Some individuals in an organization share greater power which comes from their position
the use of that for the individual benefit can result in the effecting the organization psychology.
This is known as the organizational politics. In this case study there are differences in the
generation of the employees which affect the person they favour in the organization. This causes
dis-balance in the organization. The organization psychology is this case study has the focus over
the relationship between the employees and how it has affected their performance in the
organization.
Social cognition and social thinking
Social cognition is discusses as the study of psychology in which how understand other
people by storing their information, process and their behaviour in their mind by developing a
theory about other people and social situations. In this case study the Social cognition which has
been seen is basically stereotypical. This shows how the people in the organization have this pre-
assumed idea about the behaviour of an individual. This assumption in this case study are done
on the basis of the background of the people, their generation, gender and even their race.
