INTRODUCTION
Study skills in higher education aids to enhance competence, confidence and self-esteem
(Khawaja and et.al., 2019). This is very effective in terms to improve ability to learn and retain
knowledge. Henceforth, this course is designed to assist student to develop and use skills that
will help them to be successful learners.
The present report is based on the topic as “study skills for higher education”. Furthermore,
report will cover following things as importance of foundation student for wider participation
backgrounds, key challenges facing foundation year students, Lastly, study skills in higher
education aids foundation year students to overcome these challenges.
MAIN BODY
1. Identification on significance of foundation year to students from wide participation
backgrounds.
Foundation year can be seen as stepping stone as in the world of higher education. Hence,
variety of subject can be studied in the foundation year from subject as social studies and
business management to biological science and sports therapy (Hedin and Kann, 2019). Thus,
this is the course that defined as one-year preparation course for the international students who
needs additional English language and academic preparation. This course is mainly designed for
the period of 1 year.
Additionally, foundation courses for international students provides entry route into many
courses for undergraduates. Henceforth, it can be stated that the widening participation termed
out as raising the aspiration and attainment of people from background that are under represented
at the university level. Therefore, the main aim behind this is to ensure students at universities
that reflect the diversity represented towards to the wider society. Henceforth, the several
benefits of the foundation year programme are defined in the following manner are as-
Get feel for the tertiary education environment- The foundation and preparatory courses
provide chance to settle into the tertiary study. Henceforth, studying at the tertiary level may be
very differ from what are used to, with the learning style as independent and reduction in the
contract hours that presents the challenges for the new students.
Enhancement in academic skill- Foundation courses allows to develop skill for the
tertiary education. It mainly ranges from general study skill to the knowledge within the specific
area to the chosen field. Therefore, bridging course provides you with the knowledge and it aids

to gain and develop better skills within an individual. Henceforth, time management,
independent research and academic writing aids to enhance the knowledge of the individuals and
this create long term achievement for them.
Alternative route into course- It is very competitive approach that requires the high
marks and the individual needs to be worried about the meeting the entry requirements.
Henceforth, it can be stated that foundation programs and bringing courses are the ideal situation
as this allows to gain academic skill into the courses. Thus, the students who completes their
foundation programme are the better placed to enter into the tertiary study.

Hence, it positively affected the culture of the university in variety of learning within the
individual’s. It is the quantitative programme that aids to increase confidence mong the students
period of programme (Bartlett and Uvalić, 2019). After completion of foundation year degree
programme, the progress can immediately have checked. Careers in education aids to provide
contribute to the development of institution commitment. It can also aid to reinforce the value of
the chosen course. It is the practice that is needed to adopted by school administration so that
student can have better skill and learning proficiency.

The largest professional service network in the world has identified the seven key
problems in the UK education sector that confronts to remain global education giants. Thus,
there are number of fundamental flows in the UK educational sector. Therefor, the 7 common
challenges face by the foundation year students are defined in following manner as-
Academics- The one of the biggest challenge by the student is relate with academics.
Henceforth, student face the lot of stresses when it comes to studies. Within the foundation year
programme student has to face wide pressure that can affect mental concentration of student.
Henceforth, the pressure of increasing cut off, expectation of parents and strict environment
within the university for the admission etc. lives the students challenging (Haran and Jeyaraj,

Health- It is one of the primary issues in which college students face especially feels while
they stay away from home. Thus, it can be stated that the most of the time student’s teenagers
and youngsters are the pink of health. The most of the student stay away from home and they fall
sick and may get suffer from the chicken pox and measles. At this age, the student gets to the age
of puberty and girls also face the issues as abdominal pain during the periods. Henceforth, these
all kind of factors make life challenging for the students. These kind of the issues affects the
health of students and this also has impact over academic’s achievements.

Peer pressure- The one of the core major issue face by college student is peer pressure.
Thus, parents put the direct pressure on the student mind in terms to academic achievement and
this creates the burden on the mind of parents. On the other hand, the student in this period have
the use of foul language drugs, spending money unnecessarily, party with strangers and to dress
provocatively etc. This all kind of the activities affects the academics learning and growth of the
students.
Financial stability- The one of the core pressure to the students is also can be relate with the
financial stability. Henceforth, shortage of finance is one of the critical issue that faced by the
students. Additionally, it can be stated that half of the student worried about to pay the enough
money to pay for the school and half of the students gets worries about their monthly expenses
(Academic Problems and Skills, 2018). Increase in expenses, to take borrowing from others and
spending their pocket money in terms to ending the debt leads to face lots of financial queries.
Therefore, it can be stated that students face the financial problem and this have adverse impact
on the academic performance.
Attracting and retaining the best talents- This is very crucial for universities to have the
best people so that the well skilled student aids to achieve the academic achievements. This leads
to enhance the reputation of the universities. The offering of the university builds with the
offerings as quality staff, high quality teaching results. It is crucial for universities to bring and
encourage successes. Hence, this is also one kind of challenge that creates the competition and
the number of the average student gest demotivated at this point.
3. Discussion on study skills in higher education that assist foundation year student to overcome
challenges.
To get into to adjust within the college can be typical, Therefore, new social challenges,
college students are often requiring varied skills and this all are needed to get improved before
transitioning from the high school (Johnson, 2019). Herein, this can be stated that time
management strategy and test anxiety that can often impact new students. With the help of
learning and to develop the new skills the specific academic problem can be solved out.
Additionally, foundation year is designed to take straight into degree course. Thus, foundation
degree helps to promote students in universities. In order to enhance the skills and by providing
foundation degree will helps to enhance the learning within the individual so that they can
promote better learning within the university.

Thus, teacher needs to put major focus over the improving the higher education in terms to
academic writing skills, communication skill, presentation skill and to provide project so that the
depth learning within the student can be develop at the higher education level. Henceforth, the
good and better skills of the student can have better learning during the foundation programme.
Thus, innovative and effective strategies aids to improve student’s success and also examines the
current challenges to persistence and completion. This kind of learning aids to excel the
knowledge of student and they perform their best in terms to achieve the academic achievement.
Furthermore, institute at the higher education level put the major focus over improving the
student outcomes, to develop he definition of the success and this also contributes enhancing the

Furthermore, report has covered the activities as to identify the significance of foundation
year students to wide participation, various key challenges has been defined that faced by the
students in foundation year programmer. Lastly, assignment has covered discussion on study
skill in higher education that could be beneficial to assist student to overcome the challenges.
