Organisational Structures and Culture_2
INTRODUCTION
An organisational structure can be defined as that outlines how various activities within
an organization are directed so as to attain the desired goals as well as objectives. Also, the
organizational structure of an organization determines the information flow between the different
levels of the company (Mansouri, Singh and Khan, 2018). On the other hand, organizational
culture within the organization can be defined as the collection of values, practices as well as
expectations that guide the employees. Organization chosen for this report is Marks and Spencer,
which is a leading British retailer of clothing and household products. The report explains the
different types of public sector organizational structures as well as the impact and role of central
government in public services.
LO 1
P1 Explain different types of public sector organisational structure
Organizations that operate within the public sector like government agencies, postal
services and educational institutions have organizational structures that are clearly defined. The
general structure of the organizations are hierarchical in nature. There is a clear chain of
command and all the employees within the organizations have a clarity of their roles as well as
responsibilities.
Government Organizational Structures The organizational structure within
government organizations is hierarchical in nature. Because of this, it is sometimes challenging
as there are formal procedures.
College Organizational Structure – Public universities usually have a board of trustees
and a chancellor who overlooks the activities in the workplace (Types of Organizational
Structure in the Public Sector, 2020). They are also responsible for making important decisions.
P2 Describe the concept of culture as it applies to public sector organisations
The culture of an organization is considered to be one of the most important aspects as it
helps in creating a positive and healthy environment as well as retain the employees for a longer
period of time. In context to public sector organizations, culture plays an important role as many
of these organizations have a hierarchical type of culture (Lord, Wingerde and Campbell, 2018).
It is primarily focussed on maintaining the internal stability of the company and ensuring that
employees adhere to the rules and procedures.
