Introduction
Management and operation refers to the good practices of the company through which it can
provide better services and products to its customers (Tran, 2017). Management in operations is
concerned with managing the employees so that they can perform their work effectively in the
organisation. This report is based on Sainsbury. Sainsbury is one of the largest Supermarket
chains of United Kingdom. It is the second largest retailer of groceries in UK. It’s headquarter is
situated in London. This report states about the role of a leader and function of a manager. Apart
from this different theory and model of leadership is described in this report. Along with this
various key approaches of operations management is being defined in this report. This report also
speaks about the importance of operation management for the company.
Role of a leader and function of a manager in different situations
Images role of a leader in the organisation is to motivate the employees towards their job and
their goal. Leaders are the one who sets the Vision and Mission for the organisation and helps the
employees to increase their knowledge skills and abilities so that they can perform their job
enthusiastically and assist the organisation to attain its and goal.
Leader has to perform their role separately in every different condition and situation which arises
in the organisation. As per the situation leader has to adopt different leadership styles so that they
can guide the employees well and do not create a situation of conflicts in the organisation. The
role of leader is to create a positive and healthy environment for the employees so that they do
not have to face any difficulties and issue while performing their work. On the other hand the
major functions of manager is planning controlling and coordinating the employees in the
organisation.
The main function of manager is to make out the employees about the work and provide
guidance to them how to attend the goal on a given time duration. As in the organisation different
people works together they have different cultures religion and sometimes they have different
languages. So due to the individual differences there is high chances of conflict present in the
organisation Gächter and et.al 2018). But it is the role of leader to make them understand about
their individual task that why the organisation has hired them just because they want that the
employees use their skills and knowledge to attend the goal. Instead of arguing to each other for
making they feel embarrassed. Apart from this it is also the function of manager that they must
ensure in their team no conflict takes place people work together and it is another function of

manager that they provide situation I’ll task in team so that all the members of the team get a
chance to know each other. It is must for the manager that its team interact with each other and
respect each other’s work.
Apart from this it is the role and responsibility of leader that they ensure that no
discrimination and partially take place in the organisation (Abdillah 2020). Due to discrimination
many employees feel lagging behind and they can’t focus on their work. So this is the function of
manager as well that they must make such policies so that discrimination do not occurs in the
organisation.
Apart from this another function of manager is to provide training and various learning
opportunities to the Employees so that they can enhance their skills and learn new qualities and
techniques so that they can face any situation in the organisation. Besides this the major role of
leader is to establish various leadership styles in the organisation.
So this is the responsibility of manager and leader that they discuss with their employees about
the policies and strategies made by the company apart from this they must take suggestions
opinions and views of employees what they think about such policy and how will they work
under different circumstances (Burns, 2018). According to the feedback of employees’ leader
follow different approaches so that employees can work efficiently.
Theories and models of leadership
As the main motive of leader of Sainsbury is to motivate its followers, subordinates and
employees towards their individual goals. To motivate other employees leaders of Sainsbury uses
different theories and models so that they can guide the employees well and help the company to
attain its predetermined goals.
Situational leadership
This story believes that no 1 leadership style as suitable for different situations. So the leader of
Sainsburry does not follow a single leadership approach in different situations. As per the theory
leaders can only be said effective and best when they know what type of leadership style they
have to use and different situations of the organisation. Suppose the organisation is not able to
fulfil the goal and company is facing loss.
In such situation leader have to choose different leadership style leader can’t order the
employees about their work. Even in the situation where organisation is facing loss leader must
use such leadership style in which employees also share their opinions and views about the
