INTRODUCTION
Working with leading people is one of the important components in order to run overall
business of the company which also helps in accomplishing objectives and goals. Further, it is
important for HR manager to formulate all the policies, strategies and tactics through according
to the needs and requirements of workforce so they accomplish their targets in effective manner.
Apart from it HR manager require to use such effective method of recruitment through which
they can select best and professional candidates for vacant job positions. Under this project the
company which is preferred i.e. United Parcel Service which is UK based world largest parcel
organization who has their central package delivery operation in which their main focus is to
deliver to retail stores with special delivery mail delivered for its largest client the United states
postal service and it comprises of 434000 employees. This project is all about all issues and
hurdles faced by UPS in managing people and at the time of recruitment also. Apart from it
discuss about all the legal, regulatory and ethical impact, difference between leadership and
management and importance of team work.

1.1Documentation for recruitment process
UPS is one of the largest multinational parcel companies who diversified their branches
at different countries i.e. 220. Apart from it, company deliver more than 15 million packages in
all over the world in which 7.9 are domestic as well foreign countries. The USP of this company
is that it provides fastest delivery of parcel that helps in satisfying the needs of customers.
Further, company has their own logistic system and they transfer goods and services through
their own airline services and air cargo delivery. But now a days company facing the problems in
their leadership skills, administration and management that affect overall working conditions and
daily targets also (Andersen, 2012). Lack of training development process and conflict between
leader and their followers induces 50 talented workers of UPS to left organization. In order to
come in stable position HR manager of UPS is now going to conduct recruitment selection
process with an objective of hiring new and innovative employees for which appropriate
documentation made by them prescribed below:-

Step1:- First of all HR manager require to advertised information related to vacant job
position along with eligibility criteria.
Step2:- After that examine and reviewing resume in order to shortlist candidates from the
pool of applicants.
Step3:- After that use telephonic mode in order to communicate with candidate.
Step4:- After that conduct the appropriate procedures related to interview in order to know
their capability and knowledge in respect to that job
Step5:- Find the method or source through which pool of candidates are selected after
considering the budget of company

UPS is UK based large parcel company which need to adhere with all the rules regulation
enforced by UK government in order to maintain the decorum and ethical principles in overall
operations of business. According to scale of business whether large, small and medium different
code of conduct and legal laws applied to them which they need to adhere with (Ang, 2012).
UPS at the formulating HR policy has to compile with all compulsory laws at the time of
conducting selection process. According to legal laws there are different questions which are
unethical or illegal and interviewer have no authority to ask such questions from candidates.
Various examples of this type of question are stated below:-
 Question ask related to caste, creed and family background of person
 Judge individual on the basis of their color or racism and discriminate on the basis of
gender is illegal
 Ask such type of question that defame the individual personality and affect it image also

 Avoid all the question related to pregnancy must be avoided
 Question that related to financial condition of person must be avoided.
These above criteria are set by legal bodies which must be considered by the HR manager of
UPS while hiring new employees. In contrary to this, regulatory bodies also set some standards
and norms which must be followed by selector during selection process as described below:-
 Equality and proper respect is required while appointing employees belonging from
different backgrounds. Equality Act which was formed on 2010 and include protection
of members from any discrimination at the working place so that they could work
without any problem and issues. It strengths the basic rights of employees and ensure
equality and fairness among workers.
 Absence of discrimination on the basis of gender, race, religion, racism, caste, etc.
Employees or workers are not discriminated on these basis so that they could work
smoothly and without any obstacles.
Hence, it has been understood that legal and regulatory bodies have a great impact on
recruitment because they are responsible for setting ethical terms and conditions which must be
followed by HR manager while performing their job role. Apart from it manager never be partial
and treat equally to all employees at the promotion, transfer and rewarding them for higher

Selection is the most important process that allows HR manager to select best candidates
for the vacant job profile from available pool of applicants. As general manager of UPS I need to
frame systematic procedure of selection that contains all the activities that need to conduct
during whole recruitment program. Apart from it, analyzing the selection strategies of
competitors then choose the best for company according to vision and objectives (Boone, 2015).
As general manager of UPS I need to perform my roles and responsibilities very
diligently during selection procedure. Following points require to be performed are:-
 Appoint that individual for correct activity which implies fitting choices of meeting
boards.

 Execute all the programs related to selection recruitment in effective and productive
manner.
 Consider every variables and alternatives and choose the best process for organization.
 Compliance of all the legal legislation and conduct all such activities which are legitimate
in the eye of law.
 Select those eligible employees for company that provide better services to target
audience which leads to higher profitability and productivity.
Apart from it company require to use such tools and mechanisms that help in establishing
coordination and harmony among workforce and superior in HR team that help in selecting the
best candidates at right time for vacant job position. Choose the optimum source of recruitment
i.e. internal and external which fulfills all the legal norms and helps in reducing cost and increase
efficiency of UPS. Further, UPS HR manager require to look all the internal affairs of company

HR manager of large organization plays an vital role in overall operations and selecting

enough to fulfill criteria of job. As a recruiter manager of UPS I need to actively participate in
the recruitment procedures and organize an interview process to fill the empty spaces because the
main task of HR manager is to appoint and hire new employees according to the requirement of
organization. Different activities that are necessary to perform under it are described below:-
 Conducting all the procedures of recruitment and selection according to the set guidelines
prepared by strategic level which help in carry out whole operation in effective manner.
 After select source or medium whether internal and external according to the suitability
and budget of company.

 If HR manager select external source of recruitment then use social media, advertising
mode and public news regarding job vacancy in newspaper and magazines so those who
want to apply can easily get the information.
 Then I need to shortlist the list of potential candidate from the pool of applicants and then
prepare the questionnaire for conducting interview.
 Lastly conduct interview an select the final candidate which HR manager feel that this
person by using their skill and ability improve overall quality of services and bring better
outcome in future.

In dynamic environment different changes are coming in corporate world in terms of
technology and innovation so in order to beat all the challenges of external environment leaders
of organization need to think out of the box and develop such skill and ability in them that help
them to understand all the alteration coming in business world. UPS is the largest parcel division
of UK having different branches at global reach therefore for the smooth working and maintain
sustainability in this sector both the manager and leader has to coordinate with each other so they
fulfill their responsibility towards organization. Apart from it other function which HR manager
of UPS has to accomplish with for better management of team it is important to have such leader
which consist of different leadership qualities are described below:-
 Honesty and integrity:- It is utmost feature that must be present in leader at the time when
they leading the whole workforce. Honesty and integrity at the time of performing

different function inspires employees to conduct their operations in positive and ethical
manner that lead to better accomplishment of goals.
 Effective communication:- Another quality of good leader is to maintain good interaction
with their team members that allow them to personally understand all the skill and ability
occurred in them and use it for the benefits of organization.
 Good relations:- Good leader is one only who maintain healthy and long term
relationship with their subordinate and it is possible only when he or she personally
communicate with them in order to understand their problems and issues and provide

their team members.

accomplishment of objectives. Therefore, both of them require to coordinate with their staff in
their respective departments which allow them to enhance their skills and set an benchmark of
effectiveness and efficiency in their working style (Eccles and Serafeim, 2011).
Both are interrelated with each other but their difference between leadership and
management in respect to their position and duties which are described below:-

productivity to business. For example UPS consist of large employee base that divided
into different department so for effective utilization of them this approach is very
beneficial for organization.
 Bureaucratic leadership style:- This type of leadership style involves different norms,
direction and code of conducts established by experts and professional according to the
external environment. Further, it help leaders and managers to consider their policies at
the time of framing their own control and marketing strategies which help them in
gaining competitive advantage over competitors.
2.4 Methods or different ways to encourage staff for attaining objectives.
There are different methods and mechanism that has been used in order to boost up
morale and confidences among staff members which leads to accomplishment of objectives. UPS
has their own strategies and techniques for improving the performance of employees through
training development and acknowledges them about latest style of doing job (Grin and Holt,
2011). Therefore, there are various tools which are used for encouraging staff members are
described below:-
 First of all organize systematic training events for all the existing and new employees in
which trainer provides them direction that how to use latest technologies in their working
style.

 Effective communication must be maintained between employer and employees so that
they guide them regarding the importance of changes take place in organization structure
which also enhances their career.
 Maintaining peace and harmony employees by giving them importance at the time of
taking decisions related to their interest area which boosts up their morale.
 Leaders must know about all the skills and ability of employees and encourage them to
use it for accomplishment of daily objectives.

among team members and leader gets several approaches for their project and on the

from it also give the idea regarding all the weaknesses present in them and on the basis of this
arrange the events related to training development which help in improve the performance of

give their resignation which impact badly on the performance of organization. Therefore , they
try to recruit such professional employees which maintain balance between internal and external
affairs of company and remove all the shortcomings arises at the time of delivering parcel to end
users (Lim and Epperly, 2013).
Achievement of vision is very important for sustain in competitive market for longer
period. For better performance in UPS manager need to evaluate such strategies through which
they can divide their workforce in different division according to their specialization which leads
to effective productivity. Apart from it, focus on logistics system for which organization must
start the use of innovative and digitalize appliances which help in delivering the parcel at stated
time period which help in satisfying their needs at better manner (NHS England, 2016).
Clear purpose: There needs to be a clear purpose attached with assessment. For instance
this organization attempts to ensure that employees are able to improve their performance which
ultimately leads to attainment of organizational objectives.
Valid approach: It is extremely important to opt for an valid approach when looking to
conduct an assessment of the people. The approach defines the manner through which
performance of employee will be evaluated. The common assessment approaches are ranking,
grading and 360 degree appraisal.
Free of biases: It can be said that assessment which can be carried out should not involve
any biases. It is extremely important to evaluate performance of employees of UPS in a fair and
correct manner so that an individual gathers an honest view of his own performance. It is the
responsibility of supervisor and managers to eliminate biases and ensure that they are appraised
with right mindset and approach.
Objective assessment: It concentrates on needs and desires of employees working in UPS
and link with aims and objectives of organization so that final vision could be accomplished in
effective and efficient way.
Constructive feedback: it can be said that feedback can be catered through two mediums

effectively is possible in the presence of effective leaders that comprises of all such qualities that
helpful in maintaining harmony and decorum of internal staff. Further maintain the effective
communication with subordinate that allow them to share their problems if they are facing so
