Introduction
The primary objective of this report is to conduct self swot analysis which is an effective
force through which one can market themselves. I aspire to become a laboratory assistant
which requires a wide range of skills. Even though I possess some of the skills there are a
number of skills that I must acquire in order to hold the job role. With the help of this swot
analysis, I will be able to identify my strengths as well as weaknesses within my career while
identifying the opportunities and threats that may behold. Even though swot analysis is an
effective medium with the help of which internal analysis can be conducted it is however not
enough to encapsulate all personal capabilities. I will therefore perform an action plan which
will help me determine the ways with the help of which I can capitalize on my strengths and
opportunities while minimizing the risks and threats.
Section 1: SWOT analysis
SWOT can be identified as an acronym that stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities,
and threats. It is critically used by organisations as well as individuals in order to incorporate
strategic plans with the help of which different goals and objectives can be met. The
following table identifies my personal swot analysis and the Job role that I intend to take up
as a laboratory assistant.

Strengths
In order to be proficient in the field of laboratory assistant it is essential to have the required
qualification along with the skill set in order to perform the day to day activities such as
receiving and processing samples to identify suitability while preparing for tests such as pH
and bacterial culturing (VK, 2013). The following points identify the strengths I hold that are
crucial when working in a laboratory.
Computer and technical literacy: In order to be a part of a laboratory it is essential to hold
literacy in terms of computer and technical knowledge. I hold the relevant qualification in
terms of a diploma. I am well versed with the computer techniques which will be effective in
documenting the results using the right methodologies and practises well adhering to the
procedures and policies of the organisation. As a laboratory assistant, it is essential to keep
track as well as maintain the results and through my knowledge in the area of computers
techniques and software, I will be able to ensure effective reporting of results and maintain it
on a regular basis.
Strong analytical skills: As a laboratory assistant it is essential to hold strong analytical
skills. As various samples and specimens were collected on a regular basis it is essential to
equip oneself with effective analytical skills. I possess this quality and ensure that accuracy is
maintained. With the help of analytical skills tasks become easy to perform And ultimately
enhance the overall efficiency. In order to succeed as a highly analytical laboratory assistant,
it is vital to pay great attention to details and therefore I am sure that I double check the
samples the classifying results as well as the recorded findings to maintain a high level of
accuracy.
Critical thinker: It is vital to be critical thinkers when working in a laboratory. This takes
into account understanding of the environment as well as the samples and the required tests
that are required to be performed in order to get the desired result. Therefore I believe that I
possess the skill of critical thinking through the years of educational qualification and the
additional experience I have gained after my diploma.
Understand complex information: One of the most important criteria is when working in a
laboratory is to understand complex information. Over the years of educational qualification,
I have summoned the understanding of these complex information (Mohamed et al. 2017). I
am also adaptable to critical situations that has help me to understand circumstances based on
my analytical and critical thinking ability so that the complex information obtained from the
air can be utilised in the most appropriate manner such that I can identify the correct presidios

policies as well as health regulation well conducting the laboratory tests using the right
laboratory equipment and analysing the results and documenting them to ensure smooth
management. I also believe that a strong attention to details has helped me evaluate the
complex information while segregating it in a manner where I can perform the different tasks
efficiently.
Organisational skills: The final strength that I believe I possess is by holding strong
organisational skills. Within a laboratory, it is vital to perform the different tasks while
maintaining a clean workplace. Therefore I ensure that I follow the laboratory rules and
regulation in terms of health and safety so that the different tasks of performing test
processing samples and recording and analysing the results can be conducted with accuracy
and efficiency.
Weaknesses
Although I possess a number of strengths I believe that there are some areas that require
improvement which I have highlighted as a form of weaknesses below.
Time management: As a laboratory assistant it is vital to perform a number of tasks so that
it can be completed within the designated time. I however lack the ability to multitask and
complete tasks within a defined timeframe which has affected my performance. Therefore,
having weak time management skills, my ability to conduct the tasks within a specific time
frame is affected which leads to delays in the overall operations. Thus it is important for me
to focus on this factor which will enable me to manage my time effectively while performing
all the tasks thereby maintaining productivity within the lab.
Detail-focused: As I have already mentioned I am a detailed focused individual and ensuring
that each and every detail or taking care of while processing samples performing differently
is using the right equipment and ultimately analyzing the results and reporting it, has affected
my ability to perform the task within the designated time frame. I ensure that each detail is
taken care of which takes me a long period of time to perform any task. This, therefore,
affects my workflow, division of tasks, and my overall productivity.
Lack of effective communication skills: Within a laboratory, it is vital to communicate with
one another to ensure that the day-to-day operations associated with the sample collection
process there after using the right equipment to perform the different tests can be conducted
smoothly. I however lack the skill of communicating right now; I, therefore, need to work on
this factor in order to enhance my capabilities in being a laboratory assistant for a senior. This

can have a major impact on productivity as it can create a bad impression on my seniors.
Lack of interpersonal skills: Interpersonal skills plays an important role as it allows
individuals to build a trustful relationship with others. I lack this skill which can lead to my
seniors questioning my decisions. This will not only impact my effectiveness but also
efficiency and productivity as a whole and by demotivating me. Therefore it is essential to
uphold the skill so that an effective relationship can be built with my seniors and ensure that
the tasks I perform can be trusted by them along with the overall results that are obtained
after each and every test.
Opportunities
In order to work in a laboratory a wide range of opportunities are available however it
entirely depends on the different avenues an individual opts for as a laboratory assistant
(Leigh, 2009).
Laboratory assistant: One of the major opportunities that we hold within a laboratory is
working as a laboratory assistant as it allows the individual to learn from their seniors. I can
work as a laboratory assistant as it is a vital opportunity for beginners to expand their
opportunities skills as well as experience within the industry. This job is vital within the
medical field as it requires critical skills to perform the different tasks in this area (Thajer et
al. 2020).
Medical technologist: another opportunity that can be witnessed within the field of
laboratory assistant is the career of a medical technologist. I can work under a medical
technologist who operates sophisticated equipment such that a wide range of lab tests can be
performed using specimens of patients. This test ranges from a simple blood test to highly
diagnostic diseases such as AIDS and diabetes. The test results therefore enables the doctors
to make the right medical decisions.
Medical laboratory technician: Another avenue that can be witnessed is a medical
laboratory technician. When working under a medical technologist supervision performing
general tests within the laboratory can be witnessed as it enables in identifying the presence
of any form of disease through the specimen is provided.
Histotechnician: Histotechnicians is another critical avenue when working in a laboratory as
it allows close association with pathologists. They enable in the detection of cancer even
when a patient is in surgery. Therefore, this area can also be ventured by me when

Threats
Health and safety risks: One of the major threat associated with the job role is health and
safety risks. Due to the high radiations and the utilisation of hazardous chemicals, there is a
high risk of health and safety in a laboratory. It is therefore critical to adopt strong
organisational skills so that the risks associated with health and safety can be minimised and
ensure a clean workplace.
High competition: another threat that can be witnessed is high competition within the
market. There are a large number of laboratories existing which affects competitiveness.

Conclusion
The above report provides critical understanding associated with my personal strengths,
weaknesses, opportunities and threats. I have also identified an action plan with the help of
which I will be able to capitalise my opportunities and strengths while minimising the
implication of threats and weaknesses. In order to be an effective laboratory assistant it is
crucial to enhance on these treats that I hold while capitalising on the opportunities and
ultimately minimising the threats that behold.
