Assessment Task 1- Project/Report Writing (40%)
In this assessment task, you are required to research and document on a suitable operating systems
for a server and create a network documentation for an office environment. The concept behind this
assessment is that you are able to review, research, recommend and confirm on key tasks
chronologically listed below, which are applicable and associated with the skills you need to gain to
successfully install and manage server and present to client a comprehensive network
documentation. The document produced will be a report, more specifically a proposal report
documented as per Table of contents outlined after the case study.

Case Study:
ABC Real Estate office is based in Sydney CBD. They have been operating in a small office for over 5
years. Business has grown and they have now planned to relocate to a new bigger office.Their
business team has grown to 15 staff. ABC Real Estate has approached your business XYZ ICT
Consulting Pty Ltd to assess their current network and ICT services and hardware infrastructure and
have you propose a suitable solution where the new site office will have a new network set-up with
new server, router, switches and wireless devices, some new desktops etc so that their business does
not suffer any downtime due to office relocating.
Additionally, ABC Real Estate new and current office site is currently undergoing renovationandhas
new workplace safety policy where external site visits require a prior appointment made and a safe
work method statement document produced back by yourself for any hazards identified. Please refer
to Appendix 1 for a template that can be used.
ABC Real Estate has 2 Executive directors, 5 Sales and Marketing Staff, 1 Operations Manager, 1
Human Resource Manager, 5 Administration Staff, 1 Accountant.You are also provided with the
following information of their current Network diagram and server capacity, including list of IT issues
that they are currently facing on their server, network and desktop environment.

Background to IT Issues
Their Business critical application isConsole SQL DB whichuses a SQL server which is hosted in-
house and has the following hardware and software configuration. You are not required to manage
the installation and deployment of this SQLserver software but you are toprovide a server
environment that is capable of running the SQL server.The business also accesses a cloud based
software as a service (SaaS) called eSales that has potentials of Active Directory Sync if ABC Real
Estate are able to migrate to Windows 2012 R2 server environment. Here again, you do not need to
scope the Active Directory Snyc project work for this SaaS.
Due to virtualisation requirement for future applications and client web portal, ABC Real Estate needs
to procure a server environment running on Linux which could be provided on the same single server
hardware, virtualised, with the two Network Operating Systems Linux and Windows 2008 or 2012
installed.
For Linux Network operating systems, web portal vendor preference are on Fedora Version 19 till 22.
For test environment purposed client requires only 1 workstation PC installed with Linux workstation
operating system.

Current issue:
1. Business critical server is an Intel ‘whitebox’ (PC) and not a
reliable/commercial product.
2. 8GB of RAM is not sufficient for SQL server hosting a 9GB database with
multiple concurrent access.
3. There is no disk redundancy either through RAID or otherwise on the
business critical server.
4. Network equipment is home/SOHO grade and not suitable for a small
business.
5. There is no consistent method for remote access.
6. Backup methodology is proprietary application dependant and error-prone
due to reliance on physical intervention.
7. Rack/IT equipment does not have any physical security.
8. There is no backup power supply or UPS.

9. 5 x work station PC for Administration staff are
running on windows XP which needs to be upgraded to windows 7 or 8
with new hardware.
Your company have previously performed a software based network audit via use of wireshark.
Please refer to Assessment 1 – Appendix 1 Network Function Matrixspreadsheet andheading
‘Complete Appendix 1 – Network Function Matrix’ in this report document.
In addition to solving above current issues, ABC Real Estate would mainly require the new server
environment provided with secure and reliable access to their shared folder where documentation are
stored securely by multiple staff as per their business document filing requirement. A description of
which is provided below.
