INTRODUCTION
Human resource management is defined as a strategic approach by which workforce of a
company are managed in an effective manner. Appropriate management of staff benefits a
company in attaining competitive advantage in comparison with rivals (Alfes and et. al., 2013).
HRM allows a firm to maximise the performance of employees so that high revenues and profits
can be earned in limited time. This assignment report is prepared in context with Dyson Ltd
which is a Britain based technology company founded in Wiltshire, England. This company
manufactures and design home appliances like air purifiers, hair dryers, heaters, blade-less fans,
vacuum cleaners, lights etc. At present, company is employing more than 12000 employees and
operating in a successful manner. This report will cover about functions and purpose of HRM
along with merits and demerits of different approaches to selection & recruitment. Also, benefits
of HRM practices in context with workers and employers is mentioned. Value of good employee
relations in taking right decisions is discussed. Also, elements of employee legislations are
discussed and at last applications of HRM practices in organisational context is discussed.

P1 Purpose and functions of human resource management, associated with resourcing a firm and
planning workforce
In a business firm, management of human resource is one of the major activity which
assures that organisation will work efficiently. If workforce of company will not be managed
properly, it will impact working of company in negative manner. Function and purpose of HRM
in context with Dyson Ltd are mentioned below:
Function associated with HRM
Planning: This is the most essential function of HRM where manager of firm
acknowledge their requirements and demands so that all the organisational activities can
be planned systematically. With the help of this function, manager in Dyson Ltd can do
workforce planning and associated activities in an appropriate way so that resourcing of
qualified candidates can be carried out (Banfield, Kay and Royles, 2018).
Recruiting: This is a basic function of HR department in a company. This function helps
in hiring of desired candidates so that complex activities of firm can be performed
systematically. This HRM function will help Dyson Ltd in recruitment of qualified

candidates which are capable to work challenging tasks in simple manner. Appropriate
recruitment will assure that ineffective employees will not be part of company. Hence,
workforce planning will be carried out efficiently.
Training & development: With the help of this HRM function, a company can increase
the working potential of their employees in a positive manner. In this function, HR
manager of company offer training to the employees to teach them new tactics of
performing work. By this, workforce of company will became more efficient and
workforce planning will be carried out in efficient manner (Brewster and et. al., 2016).
Purpose of Human resource management
Staffing needs: Major purpose of HRM is to hire talented employees so that
organisational work can be performed advantageously. Other staffing needs of HR
department are terminating employees for policies violation, communication with
employees to solve their queries etc. These staffing needs of HRM results in smooth
functioning of company due to which activities of workforce planning and employee
resourcing are performed efficiently.
Law compliances: This is another purpose for HRM in an organisation. This purpose of
HR team ensures that each activity of the firm will be performed by organisation in
accordance with legal rules and regulations. By this, company can prevent itself from
heavy penalties and fines. This purpose of HRM will help the manager in Dyson Ltd in
performing all the work of company in legal manner. By this, Dyson Ltd will be able to
achieve
P2 Analyse the strengths and weaknesses of various recruitment and selection approaches
Recruitment is a tactics to hire and recruit talented employees that can perform each
business task with highest efficiency. A recruitment procedure is considered as efficient if it is
carried out in a time and cost efficient manner. Selection is a way to chose most desired person
from a pool of applicants (Daley, 2012). There are different approaches to selection and
recruitment which are discussed below in context with Dyson Ltd.
Approaches for recruitment
Internal recruitment: In this approach, vacant job positions are filled by existing
employees of an organisation. Here, employees will be selected from organisation only and no
external talent will be considered. It has been said that there are different types of internal
