INTRODUCTION
Human resource management is the strategic approach of the firm which effectively
management employees of the organization to achieve competitive advantages. It is specially
design to maximize the efficiency of the employees through proper training and their
development.
This report will take Waitrose company for this case study. It is a British retailer
multinational company. This report will analyse purpose and the functions of HRM in the
company and it will also explain the approaches of recruitment and selection method. This report
will cover how HRM works and why it is important for the company to achieve their objectives
and goals.
P1- purpose and functions of the Human Resource Management
HRM plays important role in the company to gain competitive advantages (Aklamanu,
Degbey and Tarba., 2016). This department provide skilful employees to the Waitrose company,
so they can gain competitive advantages in the retail market. There are two approaches of the
HRM which define their functions are soft and hart approaches
Hard HRM
In the hart approaches HR manager of the Waitrose company treat employees simply as
their resources like they are machine. This approach has strong like with the corporate business
planning , in this they analyse what resource their company need and how they will get those
resources and how much it will be cost. HR also focus on the workforce according to the
companies need. They hire new employees if they are needed, and they also fire employees
according to the companies labour turnover.
Soft approaches
In the soft approaches HR treat their employees as a most important resource of the
company to take competitive advantages (Bratton and Gold., 2017). They also motivate
employees through the reward system, so they give their best to achieve rewards and stay
motivated. HRM focus on the long term goals of the company and plan according to it.
Purpose of HRM
Purpose of the HRM to recruit skilful employees and right people for the available job in
the Waitrose company. They focus to recruit employees on the right time, place and people to
make their workforce strong.

Functions of HRM
Here are function of the Human resource management in the Waitrose company.
Recruitment
HR manager of the company recruit new candidates when company need new employees
in their workplace to run their business.
Training and development
HRM department analyse the performance of the employees whop are working in
Waitrose company and provide training on the basis of their performance.
Motivation
HR department motivate employees through their HRM practices which include reward
system, group activities etc.
P2-Strength and weakness of recruitment and selection methods of HRM
There are different type of resource HRM used to run their recruitment process. This
helps Waitrose company to achieve market growth through the skilful employees. Some of the
recruitment sources of the HRM are Job analysis, internal and external recruitment and methods
of selection.
Internal & external recruitment
In the External recruitment process company recruit employees from outside of the
company (DeCenzo, Robbins and Verhulst., 2016). They post adds on some websites to search
skilful employees. Internal recruitment process run inside the Waitrose company, HR manager
of the company give promotion to the employees who are working in this company or part of the
company.
Job analysis
In the job analysis process HRM of the company collect the information about duties,
responsibilities, outcomes and necessary skills required for the particular job in the Waitrose
company. This help them find deserving candidate for the company.
Methods of selection
There are different different methods of selection which is used by the HR manger of the
company to find skilful employees. It includes interview, written test etc.
