INTRODUCTION
Human Resource refers to employees who operate the different operations of a company as
well as the department which manages them (Armstrong and Taylor, 2014). Employees and
human resource department play an important role in the progress of an organization. This
report demonstrates the various dimensions of the HRM in an organization. The function and
purpose of human resource management in an organization is demonstrated in an
organization. The strength and weakness of the various recruitment and selection methods are
also explained. It also elaborates the benefits of different HRM practices so that appropriate
method can be applied. It further elaborates the different importance of employee relations
and employment legislation and their impact on the decision-making process.
It adopts the case study of ‘Marriott Hotels’ to understand the application of the HRM practices
in the corporate world. Hotel Marriot is flagship brand of Marriot International which is an
American multinational organization that franchises and manages a brand portfolio of lodging
facilities and hotels. The different factors associated with the Human resource are probed in the
context of Marriot hotels.

P1 PURPOSE AND FUNCTIONS OF HRM, APPLICABLE TO WORKFORCE
RESOURCE AND PLANNING IN MARRIOT HOTELS
HRM is the backbone of an organization, therefore, it is important for an organization to focus
on the effective management of its employees in order to achieve significant growth. Marriot
hotels and resorts is a big name in hospitality sectors. It was founded in the year 1957 and
headquarters in Bethesda, United State. There are more than 560 hotels and resorts operate in
this brand. It operates in different countries across the globe.
The chief reason behind the success of Marriot is its effective strategies to manage its
employees (Marchington, et al. 2016). There are various purpose and functions of HRM in
Marriot. The key purposes of HRM in Marriot are:
Remuneration
Employee relations
Maximization of efficiency and productivity
REMUNERATION
Remuneration is defined as the reward provided by an organization to its employees in the
form of wages, salary, pay, bonuses, incentives etc. HR department of Marriot hotels rewards
their employees for their good performance (Brewster, et al. 2016).
EMPLOYEE RELATIONS
It is one of the key purposes of HR department of an organization to maintain a healthy and
positive relationship with employees. Marriot hotels focus on the development of a healthy
atmosphere are the workplace. HR department plays an important role in avoiding and
resolving different conflicts or disputes.
MAXIMIZATION OF EFFICIENCY AND PRODUCTIVITY

An effective management of the employees reflects positively on the performance of the
employees. There are different techniques which can be adopted by an organization in order to
maximize the efficiency and productivity of the employees as well as to improve the employee

REQUIREMENT AND SELECTION
It is very important for a company to recruit or select the best employees in order to
accomplish the different organizational function smoothly as well as efficiently. HR department
of Marriot hotels recruits its staff members including managers, waiter, cook and other
supporting employees for the operating different operations. It adopts internal as well as
external approaches for the recruitment of suitable employees (Board, 2017).
TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT
Effective training and development of employees are crucial for the smooth and efficient

effective training and development of an organization. It provides training to employees

department of the organization to maintain a healthy relationship with the employees. There
are different techniques which can be adapted to nourish the employee-employer relations. HR
department of Marriot focuses on the promoting employee involvement and employee
engagement in order to build a strong relationship with the employees (Kehoe and Wright,
2013).
EMPLOYEE ADMINISTRATION
Employee administration is an important function of HR which deals with the enrolment of new
hiring, selection, tracking of employee performance and other such activities which are
important for the appropriate management of the employees.
HR department of Marriot focuses on all the above-mentioned purposes and functions in order
to achieve better results. It helps it in managing the employees in an effective and efficient way.
