INTRODUCTIONHuman resource management is managing resources and people in the firm. Allemployees are motivated and are given training,compensation so that they can perform better.Thus they can achieve their objectives and can give good results. Hence firm can run smoothlyand successfully. Report discusses about Sainsbury's company which is a retail firm. It isfounded in 1869(Hendry, 2012). It sells products such as books,hardware's,consumerelectronics,dry goods etc. Assignment explains about the purpose and functions of humanresource's management applicable to workforce,strengths and weakness of recruitment andselection approach,benefits of personnel practices for employer and employee. Project discussesabout effectiveness of human practices which increases profits, productivity,importance ofemployee relations which impact personnel management decisions,key legislations whichinfluences human resource management decisions and use of personnel practices in work usingdifferent examples. TASK 1 P.1 Purpose and functions of human resource managementThere are different purpose and functions of human resource management5 Major(Functions of Human Resource Management, 2017). Aim of personnel management ofSainsbury's company are-Planning workforce – In this number of staff members are determined by humanresource manager of firm. They create plans an policies to recruit and selects employees. Theyreceive applications of various workers and choose them according to required qualification.Manager also provides according to needs of staff members. It is done so that employees canincrease the knowledge and skills top perform a particular task. Hence they can give goodresults. Evaluate performance – They evaluate performance of all staff members andmotivates all employees so that they can perform effectively and efficiently. All workers caneasily accomplish their goals and objectives. This helps in increasing the energy level of allworkers and they give good results(Hobfoll, 2011). All employees can also give suggestionsrelated to selection and recruitment and manager can apply this in their processes and methods. 1

Increases job satisfaction - Human resource manager provide compensation toemployees according to other performance. They are given extra incentives and bonuses throughwhich they are motivated and they can perform better. Hence all staff members can give goodresults and can accomplish their goals(Marchington and et.al. 2016). Manager can create plansand policies to delegate responsibility to all staff members. They explain the methods ofcompleting the activities. Through this all employees are satisfied from their jobs. Functions of human resource management - Line function – Human resource manager helps in controlling and directing activities inthe own departments. They create different plans and policies for solving issues and problemsrelated to employment. They set staff authority and other manager so that they can maintainrecord of employees who are recruited and selected. All superior managers have to solve allconflicts of candidates so that there is no confusion in process of recruitment and selectionprocess. Coordination – Human resource management helps in coordinating functions andactivities of personnel management. They try that all tasks such as recruitment and selection runsproperly. Manager solves all comforts and issues such as health or safety problems of allemployees in better manner. They tries to maintains coordination between all activities so thatthey can function smoothly and successfully. Advise managers – Human resource management helps the Ceo's and other manager sothat they can understand the problems of personnel department. They helps other seniormanagers to solve problems such as selection of employees and other issues such as health andsafety etc. Thus these issues can be solved in proper manner. Hence it results in smoothfunctioning of all activities. It results in growth and success in long run. Managerial functions-Planning – Human resource creates different plans and policies for recruiting employees.It is important so that good staff members are selected. Organizing – Manager assigns different role and responsibility to employees so that theycan perform all activities efficiently and effectively(Pinto, 2015). Thus all activities can runsmoothly and successfully. Directing – Human resource motivates and guides all employees so that they can givegood results. Hence they can easily accomplish the objectives. 2
