INTRODUCTION
A business can be referred to as economic system where products or services are
exchanged for money. It is basically a occupation where sales and purchase of goods as well as
services are done in order to make profit. The main aim of establishing business is to earn
profit. Business can also be considered to be as an enterprise facilitating trade practices in order
to earn revenue.
The report will have focus on identification of the functional areas in Brooklands
company. It is basically a UK based company which offers accommodation and food services to
customers. Study emphasizes on analysing the significance of communication in context of
leadership and management. It will also highlight the current drivers of globalisation.
TASK
1. Identification of functional areas of Bookland hotel and its hierarchy of management.
Bookland is UK based small medium enterprise in UK. An organisation offers
accommodation and food services to customers. Business entity consists of team of highly
skilled and talented workforce. Brooklands hotel is among the top ten small medium enterprises
in UK. The manager in an enterprise is highly supportive and all the team members are highly
motivated. In context of Bookland hotel, employees has plenty of opportunity to foster their
professional growth. Line manager in an enterprise directly appreciate workers for making their
significant contribution in accomplishment of business objectives (Burke, 2018.). The mission of
an enterprise is to fulfil the expectation of their team member and also to provide quality services
to their customers. Vision of an enterprise is to achieve leading position in an industry.
Management in an enterprise provide equal treatment to business owners, team members,
shareholders and customers. Bookland is among the companies which has high level of
engagement. There are number of organisational structure. The structure of companies basically
dependents of the size as well as nature of business. Different types of organisational structure
are hierarchical structure, matrix structure (Weerakit and Beeton, 2018. ). Line organisational
structure, divisional , network structure, team based organisational structure. In context of
Brook land hotel, an enterprise has functional divisional structure. Bookland firm consists of
few functional division which are mainly responsible for performing the different tasks. In
context of Brookland have only few functional areas these are lobby, meeting room , pool and

dining areas which can be utilised for different purpose. The different types of functional areas
in Brooklands hotels are :
Human resource management : The human resource department in Brookland hotel is mainly
responsible for managing people and other business activities. In addition to this, main duty of
Human resource department in the Bookland hotel is to recruit highly skilled and talented
workforce. They are responsible for developing policies, regulations and for providing training
to workers. Performance management and salary processing is also the core tasks of Human
resource manager.
Marketing: It is the functional division in Brookland which is mainly responsible for
promoting goods or services offered by an organisation. They are mainly responsible for
ensuring that goods are being delivered to customers at right time. It is the duty of marketing
department in Brookland company to collect the information related to the customers needs and
provide the same to an enterprise (Koo, Kim and Kang, 2018.).
Food and beverage service department : The food and service department in Brookland hotel
is mainly responsible for delivery the food services to customers on their desks.
Food production department : It is the functional division in Brookland hotel which is mainly
responsible for preparing the food for guests.
Finance and accounts department : Role of accounts functional division in Brookland hotel
is to prepare the financial report and record the all business transactions on routine basis. It is
the duty of finance department to arrange the funds that are needed in order to fulfil the
requirements of different business operations.
Housekeeping department: It is the functional unit in Brookland hotel whose duty is to
manage the guest rooms and to make sure the cleanliness at public areas.
Front office department: This functional division in Brookland hotel is mainly responsible for
welcoming guest and for providing them with information about the goods or services which
are offered by an organisation.
2. Communication is central to leadership and management
Communication is central to leadership and management as it assist leaders as well as
manager in motivating the team members to increase their participation in business activities
and to make their significant contribution in accomplishment of desired business objectives. It is
the communication which is considered to be as central to complete management procedure. An

effective communication skills allows manager to share information and develop strong
interpersonal relationship with employees at workplace. In contextual of management , an
effective communication is central in order to facilitate negotiation. An effective communication
is central to management as it assist in driving organisation towards accomplishment of desired
objectives (Hassi, 2019.). It is an effective communication skills which enables mangers to share
their expectations from employees.
In context of leadership, communication is central to modern day leadership. The leader
in Brookland hotel required to develop both hard and soft skills as it will assist their team
members in eliminating the challenges which might occur in performing the activities at
workplace. The leaders are required to develop an effective communication skills as it will
assist them in developing the good relationship with their team members. An effective
communication as well as leadership is closely interrelated (Why communication is essential for
great leaders, 2018.). An effective communication enables both leaders and managers to
develop the understanding and belief among employees. In context of Brookland hotel,
manager by communicating directly with workers can encouraged them to follow the principles
as well as values which their leaders intends to inculcate in them. In context of leadership,

main drivers of globalisation are :

Decline in trade barriers : This is the key driver of globalisation. The decline in trade barriers
and low tariff has encouraged Brookland hotel to import as well as export goods to other
countries.
Decline in investment barriers : The increase in the flow of investment from the foreign
countries and easy availability of funds for expanding the business has positively influenced the
Brookland hotel to grow as well as expand their business at international level. In addition to
this, with the investment international organisations are also making investment in the facilities

enterprises are also bringing the expertise as well as global connections which has provided

market has encouraged an organisation to expand business at international level. Decline in the
demand of specific products or services due to poor economic condition that has further lead to
the decline in profitability has encouraged firm to expand business at international level.
Costs driver: Increase in the costs of labour and raw material in the country has encouraged
Brookland hotel to import the goods or services from other nation (Drivers of Globalization,
2019.). In context of Brookland hotel, international opportunities to create economies of scale
and high product development costs has encouraged an enterprise to expand business at global
scale.
Competitive driver : In context of the small medium size business liker Brookland hotel,
increase in level of competition within hospitality industry has encouraged an organisation to
expand business in other country. Due to the increase in the intensity of competition, Brookland
hotel has to face the difficulty in maintaining its concentration on the core business function
which further has adverse effect on the quality of services provided and also ion the performance

of an enterprise. It is the issue faced by Bookland hotel which has inspired firm to expand
business.
4. Comparison of two leadership style .
Leadership could be referred to as potential of an individual to lead of group of people in
successful manner. In context of Brookland hotel, Leader in an organisation is really supportive
in nature, they support people in completing their tasks in systematic manner. The selection of an
appropriate leadership style is very much crucial as it could have significant effect on the
behaviour as well as performance of employees (Comparison of leadership styles to different
factors, 2014). The leadership style can be categorised into two these are Task oriented
leadership and other is people oriented leadership style. Task oriented leadership can be defined
as behavioural approach in which leaders mainly emphasizes on tasks which are required to be

oriented leadership style have focus on motivating and supporting people.

It has been concluded from the above that communication is central to leadership as it
assist leaders in motivating other people. The other fact which has been summarised from the
above is that the main drivers of globalisation are competition , advancement in technology ,
market driver etc.
It has been suggested that the leaders in Global company can use Transformational
leadership style which will assist them in managing people at international level.
