Recently company has appointed its new general manager, Peter Farnsworth who
observed that hotel is facing many issues at present. Immediately after figuring out the problem
Peter conducted the survey of all department so that they can find out which department is
lacking and how. The result of survey states that Imperial Hotel was facing major problem in the
form of inefficiency of previous department head and supervisory staff which ultimately leads to
high turnover of staff, poor customer satisfaction etc. By seeing all these issues the retention rate
of employees reduced by almost 40% which is not good for the company and its image
(Alvesson and Willmott, 2012). This main reason behind this is lack of efficiency of managers
and supervisors. Employees generally follows the direction of their managers but if manager are
doing bad work then it will definitely the performance of personnel.
Peter observed that supervisor of Imperial Hotel are not accurately monitoring the work
activities held on daily basis including cooking in kitchen, safety measures, housekeeping etc.
These are the basic amenities that every guest look in a hotel but due to inefficiency of these

region of UK. Following are the detailed description of all management and leadership theories
that has been applied by general manager of Imperial Hotel:
1. Contingency Theory: According to this theory, managers are required to take decision on
the basis of current work-place situation instead of holding one size fits all method. With
the help of this theory, manager can deals with current issues in an appropriate manner.
Imperial Hotel needs to apply this theory in their organisation as it help in improving the
participation level of employees which ultimately leads to achieve departmental task in
more effective manner (Boswell and O'Kane, 2011).
2. Classical Theory: According to this theory, Peter needs to redesign the structure of hotel
so that function of different department run smoothly. It deals with providing opportunity
to manager so that they can effectively monitor and control activities related with
employees. As per this theory, managers needs to promote healthy working environment
as it directly affect the working style of employee. If workers start treating their co-
worker as friends not competitor it reduces the chances of conflict among them.
3. Human Relation Theory: The main aim of this theory is to maintain healthy relationship
with employees which somewhere Imperial Hotel is lacking. Their managers needs to
pay full attention towards their workers and focuses on improving their skills and
knowledge and keep them updated. Motivated employee achieve company's objective in
cost-effective and timely manner.
Six main principle of this approach is discussed below:
Proper division of labour: There must be selection of personnel, as per requirement of
corporation and it is essential to deliver job responsibilities which is necessary for completion of
task. If labour is correct then there will be proper task accomplishing.
Chain of command: There must be proper command to employees so they can achieve
objectives effectively. There are possibilities that manager has to communicate with other
department also this can be done effectively when communication chain is clear.
Separation of personal and official property. There must be difference in personal and
official assets and it must be clear to workers. There are many assets in Imperial organisation to
achieve business objectives (Damron, 2013). But it is essential to tell that these are not personal
asset of company so it must be used in best manner.

Application of consistent rules- There is use of different plans and policies in Imperial
Hotels to achieve business objectives. It is essential to work under same technology so results
can be compared with past results.
Selection and promotion based on qualification- There must be selection of employees
on the basis of their skills and qualification. This helps company to get new and innovative ideas
which help in creating goodwill of organisation (Haddow, Bullock and Coppola, 2013). There
are different employees having some skills and knowledge, which can be applied at workplace.
Proposal to solve such management problems
In this case there is discussion about problem of lack of leadership and monitoring. There
are many employees working in Imperial Hotels so there is requirement of leadership and
guidance which helps employees to achieve business objectives effectively and efficiently. In
Imperial Hotel there is lack of leadership employees are not satisfied with their work so labour
turnover and absenteeism is more which affects business operations adversely. According to data
80% employees leave job in first year because of low guidance. Due to improper management
customers are not satisfied so sales also reduced. Customer satisfaction is the key for growth of
business but due to this problem it is tough (Hislop, 2013). It ultimately affects business
objectives adversely. There are many health issues to employees. Negative impact due to this
problem are-
Negative impact on profits.
Dissatisfaction among customer.
adverse effect on brand name and goodwill.
Cannot face competition with outer world.
After analysing above factors new appointed manager take corrective measures to reduce
and improve image of company in market. They have knowledge about new and innovative
techniques which are effective in fulfilling society need. Imperial Hotel has departments such as
housekeeping, finance, IT, Human resource, etc. to achieve business objectives. There are
change in mindset of every employees this can be done through motivation and communication.
Through communication manager came to know about perception of workers and it is essential
to adopt new techniques which help in providing best services. There is difference in thoughts of
