Success and growth of any business enterprise depend upon effective management and
leadership. It is the prime responsibility of every company's manager to implement effective
management and leadership theories which help in motivating staff members so that they can
carry out their activities in an appropriate manner (Abe, 2010). Imperial Hotel is worldly
renowned international branded chain of hotels. They are operating their services all across the
globe. Due to inefficiency or lack of previous head of department and supervisory staff, Imperial
hotel undergo various issues in the form of lack of controlling and monitoring over the
employees. The main issue faced by Imperial Hotel was in the form of disappointing sales
performance, high level to staff members, poor customer services etc. However there are
numerous solution available to overcome these issues are in the form of reviewing monitoring
procedures, supportive management, collaboration of different department and IT support.
The given report talks about the application of leadership and management theories,
determining potential issues due to ineffective control and developing best possible solution for
the concerned problem.

The Imperial Hotel is a London based 500 bedroom hotel which is managed and owned
by well known international branded chain of hotels in 4 star market. The hotel is operating in
more than 25 countries of UK. It is located in the heart of London's West End with an aim of
offering high quality services to its international customers and tourists and effectively satisfy
their diverse requirement. Imperial Hotel serve large number of facilities such as 4 restaurants
and 3 bards, 500 bedrooms, 12 conference room that provide facility to minimum 1,000 people,
swimming and other leisure activities. For handling all such facilities in an adequate manner
large number of manpower is required. Talking about the staff of Imperial Hotel, currently the
hotel is having 6 heads of department which include human resource & training, housekeeping,
guest services & concierge, food and beverage, front of house and reception. Moreover there are
almost 450 workers work in total including 300 full time and 150 part-time (Albert and Beatty,
2014). Imperial Hotel also appoint outside contractor that look out facilities like management of
leisure centre, laundry services and specialist cleaning.

Recently company has appointed its new general manager, Peter Farnsworth who
observed that hotel is facing many issues at present. Immediately after figuring out the problem
Peter conducted the survey of all department so that they can find out which department is
lacking and how. The result of survey states that Imperial Hotel was facing major problem in the
form of inefficiency of previous department head and supervisory staff which ultimately leads to
high turnover of staff, poor customer satisfaction etc. By seeing all these issues the retention rate
of employees reduced by almost 40% which is not good for the company and its image
(Alvesson and Willmott, 2012). This main reason behind this is lack of efficiency of managers
and supervisors. Employees generally follows the direction of their managers but if manager are
doing bad work then it will definitely the performance of personnel.
Peter observed that supervisor of Imperial Hotel are not accurately monitoring the work
activities held on daily basis including cooking in kitchen, safety measures, housekeeping etc.
These are the basic amenities that every guest look in a hotel but due to inefficiency of these
facilities customer choices or preferences shift to other hotel where they get all these facilities
effectively. By not monitoring the performance of all these department, Imperial Hotel may face
consequences in the form of poor brand image, low customer satisfaction and loyalty, decreased
market position, low profitability etc. Customers are considered as the king of market as they
majorly contribute in yielding higher revenues and profits for the firm. Due to ongoing issues in
Imperial Hotel, customers are not satisfied with their services, as a result they switch to some
other local brand hotel. Their customers are facing problems in the form of increased waiting
time at reception, cleaning of rooms, food quality, less supportive behaviour of manager, poor
room services etc. In addition to that, problem related with co-ordination and communication
also found in Imperial Hotel. Ineffective management and leadership demoralise employees and
as a result company has to undergo major employee turnover near about 80% in a year.
