INTRODUCTIONOperation management is the process in which organisation performs its day to dayactivity. Operation department responsible for better performance by which customers getsatisfied and happy with the services of firm. Operation management is liable to convert essentialinputs into valuable output. Manager needs to utilize the resources in the best possible way. Italso ensures the quality of product and services on the basis of customer needs and wants. In thispresent report Mark & Spencer company has been taken into action. It is a big retail market inUK and provides variety of services. In this given assignment will discuss about the role andfunctions of Manager and Leader and the various theories and approaches of management. It willexplain about the importance of operation management. P1 Roles and characteristics of manager.Leaders and managers are the two persons who manage the working environment of theorganisation(White, 2016.). Manager of the company is liable to delegate the work and givesroles and responsibilities to their subordinates. They explain the strategies and projects to makeproper communication between the work. On the other hand leaders are the individuals who leadthe group and create motivation level of employees in the organisation. Leaders of the companygives the best way to do the work. Leaders have the responsibility to take the confidence level upof the employees(Winkler, and Choban, 2015. ). Both the persons plays a very essential role toaccomplish the objectives. In M&S ltd manager needs to explain the roles and responsibilities tothe subordinates so that every employee should know its work properly. Also, manager needs tomaintain good relation with the employees so that subordinates doesn't feel demotivated duringthe work. On the other side leader of the M&S Ltd have responsibility to take care about theneeds or wants of the employees during the work time. Leadership power helps to influence thecompetency of the employees. It helps to increase the dedication and commitments of theemployees. Mangers of M&S company manage the project work or gives proper guidance about thework. On the other side Leaders pay attention on employees and increase the enthusiasm amongthe employees. In every organisation employees behaviour is very important to full fill the targetof company(Chiu, and Lo, Western Digital Technologies, 2016.). Employees are the individualswho implement the business plans into proper manner so that it is the responsibility of managerand leaders to take care of its needs. 1

As compare to leaders mangerof the M&S focus onmanaging the work amongemployees.Vision Leaders have long-term visionto maintain the interestbetween employees. On the other side managershave short term vision toaccomplish the short targetsand projects.Characteristics Leader is the person whocreates new ideas.But, the managers follow thesame process which is given. TargetLeaders target is to create newleaders and qualities. But, manager main target is toachieve the organisation goals.RoleIn M&S leader role is to leadthe team with innovativemethods.But manager role is to sustainthe administration works inproper manner.ValuesLeaders give value tomotivation so that individualsperform better in future But the manager gives value tofollow the rules and regulationto achieve the organisationobjective.Manger performs the task which is important for the organisation. But the leaders followthe guidelines through which individuals get increase their performance level by increasing theirself motivation. Both the persons helps to enhance the organisation values and invent newstrategies and plans. Managers of the company gives work to the individuals on the basis of itsskills and qualification(Ming, Song, Mingjuan, Lingyun, Min, and Yuejin, 2013. ). On theother side leaders gives inspiration positive thought so that they work better and gives their fulldedication towards company goals.2
