INTRODUCTION
Business can grow and develop in the international market when their management and
operations are working parallelly to each other (Adebiyi and Amole, 2016). It is very important
for business associates to monitor their management and operation activities regularly. By this
set goals and objectives can be attained in the set time duration. In an organization when
management and operation are working smoothly they are able to gain competitive advantages
against rivalry which is a positive mark for the business. For the completion of the report Mark
and Spencer is selected. It is located in Westminster, London. This leading firm is specialist in
selling high quality food products, clothing and home product. It was founded in the year 1884
by Michael marks and Thomas Spencer. This report covers, role of manger and leader as well as
differences between management and leadership. Deep analysis is done regarding how chaos
theory and management by objective support growth and sustainable performance. Evaluation of
operational approaches to operational management is done.

1: Introduction to the firm and management structure
Mark and Spencer is listed in London stock exchange and has 959 stores across United
Kingdom. In the global market this leading organization became first British retailer to make pre
tax profit. Management declared that by the coming 2022 around 100 stores will be closed down
in a radical plan. Organization is serving its goods and services worldwide and are satisfying the
emerging needs of the customers on priority level. By this positive image is build in the eyes of
the customers which assist firm build loyal customers towards their goods and services. There
are around 1400 stores in 57 countries and over 50 international websites so that set goals and
objectives can be attained in the specified time frame. Additionally, numerous other services are
provided by firm such as, insurance, mortgages, credit cards, current accounts and savings and
many more.
Flat organizational structure is adopted by mark ans Spencer in their working premises.
This type of structure is adopted by company as it is limit levels of management among
administrative level and front -line workers (Battini and Sgarbossa, 2016). Through this
management structure staff members are invited more in the decision making process. Due to
which they are assured that they are valuable asset of the company. This particular step helps the

top level management to retain skilled and capable employees for longer time duration which is a
positive mark for the company in the long run. Implementation of this type of structure at the
work place assist co-workers to raise their overall workforce efficiency for the attainment of the
set standards.

Definition of manager: An individual who is help responsible to manage, organize and motivate
staff members to raises their work force efficiency in order to meet the set objectives in the
specified deadline. Every organisation require manger in their working premises so as to operate
the business day to day activities smoothly.
Role of manager:
Spokesperson: An individual who symbolize an organization to the external people is
termed as spokesperson. In context of Mark and Spencer manger plays a significant role in
representing the firm in front of rivalry prevailing in the global market. On the other hand they
they are accountable to convey their plans and action in effective way so as to gain good return.
Decision maker: In an organization issues are resolved by manger and are held
accountable to take best decision without biassness. Moreover, in the intense competitive world
manger are accountable to operate the business activities smoothly continuously (Choi and Zhao,
2016).
Characteristics:
Time management: The main characteristics of manger is that they manages all the
work in the set deadline. The all the activities are business related activities are monitored by
manager so that necessary improvements can be done easily. In regards of Mark and Spencer
supervisor handle and tackle the work assigned in order to assure that task will be accomplished
in the set time span with less error in them.
Respect employees: It is very essential to have this characteristics in a manager because
by this manager is able to convince their teammates to work effectively and efficiently. In
context of Mark and Spencer manager treat their employees as valuable asset and invite them in
decision making process. By this they can be retained for longer time duration.
Definition of leader: It is explained as an individual who act as a supporter and mentor who
timely guide their staff member to work hard for the achievement of common goal designed by

the firm. They show the path on which group member perform their assigned task in order to
create tough bench mark for competitors prevailing in the open market place.
Role of Leader:
Boost morale: Employees self-esteem and morale value is encouraged by leader
of the company. In Regards of Mark and Spencer, leader change their role as per the requirement
and stand with their group member in every stage in order boost their morale while they are
performing their assigned task.
Vision provider: Employees can come up with productive results when vision is
provided clearly by the leader. Things are full-filled systematically when vision is clearly and
are made understood what and how should be done the allotted task. In Mark and Spencer leader
share the vision and guide their group members accordingly in order to be in the leading position
among its competitors.
Characteristics:
Accountability: The error or mistake conducted by team members while completion of
the assigned task for this leaders will be accountable (David and David, 2016). This is because
they are supporter and guider who will be monitoring their work timely. In mark and Spencer if
set goals are not accomplished in time leaders are held responsible for it.
Confident person: Leaders characteristics is to remain confident in every condition.
Their confidence indirectly boost employees to work hard for better outcomes. Leaders of Mark
and Spencer are confident towards their decision which are taken by them and accordingly assure
their team members that they are on right track.

Conflict management: The role of leader in this situation is to understand the problem
of employees which raise conflict among them (Hazen and Hill, 2018). Best decision will be
taken by the leader without any discrimination on any base or favouritism. Whereas, role of
management is to identify the root cause of the conflict which emerged in the working premises.
Top level monitor the activities of the workers in order to create positive working environment
for the coming years. The varied roles played by management and leadership effectively in the
intense competitive world will directly help the organization to compete with its rivalry
prevailing in the international market.
SITUTION 2:
New product launching in the market: At the time of launching the innovative goods
on large platform both management and leadership plays varied role. Management role is to
monitor all the activities of the product so that desired goods is launched appropriately in the
market. They mange the level of resources, equipment, manpower and so on needed for the
launch of new product. On the other hand role of leader is to identify the loop holes in the
product and make changes on immediate basis. By this chances of error reduces and best
outcome can be attained easily.
4: How numerous theory support in growth and sustainable performance.
Chaos theory is explained as mechanism to study unpredictable attributes in systems
ruled by deterministic laws. In the working premises this particular theory is executed in order to
elaborate the complex systems like, astronomy, economics and weather. Mark and Spencer uses
this theory for the enhancement of growth and sustainable performance because it helps in
guiding behaviour in a firm which depends on project based work for its strengths. By this set
standards can be attained easily.

Management by objectives was discovered by Peter Drucker in the year 1954. It is
described as objectives in an organization in order to provide sense of direction to the staff
members. This theory supports the growth and sustainable performance because here, manager
and staff member work together and monitor goals for particular set time frame. Mark and
Spencer is benefited by this theory as it directly aid in better management,difficulty in setting
goals, emphasis on short term objectives, developing controls etc.

up-coming improvements.
Leader and manager influences firm day to day activities in positive way. The role played
by both of them is for the betterment of the company. The role of management and leaders helps
the organisation to compete with the rivalry in order to sustain for longer time duration in the
open market place.
Recommendations for improvements:
 Both leaders and management should be more flexible enough in order to mould
themselves easily to the changing environment.
 Better tuning should be there among management and leader so that role of each of them
can be performed much more better as compare to past performance (Heath, 2018).
