INTRODUCTIONIn this study, Operation's Management has been discussed briefly. In the discussion the rolesand responsibilities of an Operation Manager has been included(Bernardelli,Mangueira andRuiz2014). The Operation's Management is an area of an organisation which is concerned with theproduction of the products and services. It focuses on the effective utilisation of the resources. Thereport also defines the various roles and responsibilities the leaders and managers plays within theMarks and Spencer Ltd. It also includes the different theories and approaches applied within theoperation's management. The report also consist the study of the factors affecting the operationalmanagement and the decision making in the Marks and Spencer LTD. LO 1P1 : Different roles and characteristics of a leader and manager in the Marks and Spencer LTD. As a Management consultant for the Marks and Spencer, It is easily observed that the businessoperations within the organisation is organised and controlled by various leaders and managers atdifferent level. Both the Managers and the leaders plays a vital role in the operations within theMarks and Spencer Ltd(Cooper,Dowsett and Rogers,2013). A leader is one who inspires thefollowers to increase their willingness to perform various task to achieve a goal and a Manager isthe person who is responsible for the managerial functions within the organisation and the manageris a ling between the organisation and its stakeholders for example – shareholders, customers,employees etc. There are many differences between the roles and characteristics of a leader and amanager which are stated below - BASISLEADERMANAGERDefinition Leaders the one who providedirection to the individual andthey guide in carrying out theduty in the Marks and SpencerLtd. It is responsible only forthe team.A manager is the person whocontrol as well as direct thewhole organization. He is theone who assign the work to theemployees in Marks andSpencer Ltd.Focus The leader focus on attainingthe goals and objectives. Theyfocus only on their teammembers which they areleading as well as directing. The focus of the manager in theMarks and Spencer Ltd is todevelop skilfulness among theindividuals so that the task canbe completed in an impressive

way. Decision making process In the decision makingprocess, the leader sometimestake part in decisions. But incase of democratic leader ifany decision is made for theteam, then he considers all theteam members in the decisionmakingprocess(Evangelopoulos,GeorgilakisandHatziargyriou,2016). The mangers are included inevery decision of Marks andSpencer LTD because they arethe one who know the actualposition of the organization andeven the situation in which thecompany is carrying out itsoperations. Power The Power is given to theleader of Marks and SpencerLtd by their followers. If hehas a good leadership qualitieshe gets the support of thepeople. Power is in the hands ofmanagers by default becausethe position only has givenpower to him to coordinate andmanage the operations of Marksand Spencer Ltd.PersonalityThe personality of the leaderis magnetic and he has thepower to influence thebehaviour of the employees. Managers are the one who arecalm in nature and their focus ison maintaining andcoordinating the activity of theMarks and Spencer Ltd. Risk The leaders are considered tobe the risk taker, they alwayschoose the challenging wayand always takes the risk toobtain them.They can be considered as therisk averse because in Marksand Spencer Ltd they follow therules and regulations of theorganization which is made bythe firm. M1Situational leadership theory states that there are many situations in which leaders have toreact hard and also some situations are there when leaders have to react soft with employees.
