INTRODUCTION
Personal and professional development is an important concept that includes
enhancement of skills and knowledge of individuals so that they can perform their job roles in an
effective manner (Professional and Personal Development, 2015). It consists of improvement of
several factors such as communication, presentation, creativity, interpersonal and soft skills, etc.
Such aspects are beneficial for work life and personal growth of an individual. This report is
about personal and professional development for supervisor of a restaurant. McDonald's has been
chosen for the study which an American brand is delivering several types of fast food and
beverages. Several approaches for self-managed learning and their benefits will be discussed in
this report. Also, it is required to identify the development needs in order to make an action plan.
This report will include activities involved in the development plan. There are certain benefits
that company and employees can get from these methods of learning will be discussed here as
well.

1.1 Assessing approaches of self-managed learning
Self-managed learning is a concept in which individuals will learn from their past
experiences. It also includes knowledge gained from schools and colleges. Such type of learning
is reflected from communication, innovation and mentality of a person. Along with that, there
are several other methods which could be used by an individual to improve the skills for personal
and professional development. These are as follows-
Seminars- Seminars could be conducted in order to enhance the knowledge and skills of
employees (Forte and Flores, 2014). It assists in improving interactive and presentation abilities
as well as they become able to speak properly in the public without getting hesitated. This
company can organize such programs to improve the personality of staff members in an effective
manner.
Internet- It is an important source of knowledge from where an individual can gain
different types of skills. There are so many videos available on several sites that are very
effective in improving the abilities of person on frequent basis.
Training- These are the sessions in which experts and experienced people share their
information and thoughts. This helps in personal and professional development of individuals. It

is useful for the betterment of employees and company as well. Therefore, this enterprise can
arrange training programs to enhance capabilities of workers to make them perfect in their
assigned jobs.
1.2 Suggesting ways in which lifelong learning could be encouraged
Lifelong learning refers to skill set that remains with an individual for the whole life. It
begins when they are born and remains till the last age (Gamrat and et. al., 2014). Such skills
could be gained from both formal and informal ways. Firstly, an individual learns from mother
and family members. It includes disciplines, habits, values, cultures, etc. After this, they get the
knowledge from academic institutions such as schools and colleges. An individual applies these
skills in every situation he is facing in the life. These are essential in motivating self-learning to
facilitate personal and professional development. SWOT analysis is required to evaluate own
opinions, judgements, perceptions, etc.
Strengths are related with positive aspects of a person that helps in fulfilling the needs of
personal and work life. It reflects from the attitude and behaviour of an individual. Weaknesses
are negative aspects of personality that affect the growth process of a person. Opportunities are
the methods available through which personal and professional development could be done in
order to make future secure and achieve desired goals of life. At last, threats are the external
barriers that create problems for person. For instance, unemployment, lack of money, etc.
1.3 Evaluating benefits of self-managed learning for individuals and organisation
Self-managed learning is very important for facilitating the growth of individuals in
several manners (Beach, 2012). Along with that, it also helps in the development of an
organisation. There are many benefits of self-managed learning to employees and organisation.
Some of these are:

Team work- Self managed learning helps in building a sense of team work in a person.
Its methods include gaining knowledge in groups of co-workers, students, etc. This is beneficial
in getting better understanding to work in team and attitudes to represent it effectually.
Communication- It is highly helpful in improving the interactive and interpersonal skills
of workers which allow them to speak effectively with others and impress them. Such aspects are

them to handle tough situation in an easier way. Therefore, all these improvements are

opportunities for growth and develop a personal and professional development plan for
employees of Mc Donald's.
2.1 Evaluate own skills and competencies
Evaluation of self-abilities and skills is an effective technique for identifying the inner
strengths. It is highly beneficial in determining capabilities required at work place to perform
given jobs in effective way. I have several acquisition that could be significant in various aspects
related with organisational objectives and business operations. These competencies are as
follows-
Communication As a supervisor in restaurant, there is the need to have good
communication so that I could interact with my co-workers and
subordinates properly. It is also required to create healthy
relationships with other employees.
Focussed In order to accomplish the goals and objectives, I have to be more

focussed and concentrated to achieve these motives in a timely
manner.
Coordination As a superior, I have to ensure proper coordination amongst
employees so that all the tasks will be performed efficiently.
Therefore, these are several competencies that are required to be improved for
performing my professional roles in more productive way.

It is required to conduct SWOT analysis to identify self development requirements. An
individual can become aware about various important factors that are to be considered in order to

organisation so there it is facing numerous issues related with external and internal environment
of business. Supervisor of this enterprise plays an significant role in providing effective solutions
to such issues. It could be done in following manner-

Aggressive – This communication style includes expression of anger. An aggressive
person wants their requirements to be fulfilled first as they think they holds more rights and their
efforts are more as compare to others. This style is ineffective as it results in negative impacts
because of loudness.
Assertive- It is most important style of communication as it is related with self esteem. In
this way, individual is confident in interacting with others. It focusses on achieving goals without
hurting others sentiments (Robertson, 2016).
Passive- aggressive- In this style of communication, a person tries to avoid conversation
that could express feelings and views.
