INTRODUCTION Communication is an act of transmitting or passing information from one person to another by using signs, semiotic rules, symbols and many more. This poster includes common challengesand barriersof effectivecommunicationalongwith strategiesfor overcoming communication barriers. It also includes awareness of cultural influences on communication and negotiation MAIN BODY Common challenges and barriers to effective communication. Jetwing Hotels Limited is Sri Lankan hotel and resort chain is opening a new hotel at Colombo, Sri Lanka and promotes the resort by emphasising on the security that managers of selected resort provides. Following challenges of effective communication they faced are following: Market repositioning: Due to intense competition, it is a challenge for selected hotel to reposition its image in competitive market for promoting the resort. Differencesofperception:Perceptiondifferencesofcustomersleadsto miscommunication between interpersonal and organisational levels and thus a challenge for effective communicating securities provided by chosen hotel. Barriers of effective communicationare as follows: Barriers are related to hindrances or obstacles that helps in prevent movement, access and flow of the information outside or inside company. Barriers distort communication within company. Barriers develop the negative impact on communication among the top management and staff members. Barriersinunderstandingaccurateperception:Differentpeoplehavedifferent perceptions and making assumptions as well as ignoring circumstances results in misconception. Drawing same conclusion from relevant situations is a barrier in understanding perceptions. Barriers in verbal communication:Using overcomplicated, unfamiliar or technical terms can result in confusion for public and leads to obscure meaning of the message send by hotel manager to general public of Sri Lanka in promotional campaigns. Cultural- Firms with their global operations and markets require to be conscious about what they say if interpretations various nationals working for them. It is important if message 1
required to be translated in to other language. Every person culture is different from each other and employees or company can face some complexities when conducting business in another country. Physical- This issue is related to physical attributes of environment, communication takes place. Many of the people operate in the open plan offices which offering easy to access to the other team members when working within group. It can helpful in make the other tasks more consuming than required. Jetwing Hotels Limited mainly conduct wide area of tasks and there is a need to management to give positive environments so that it suit to various activities. It will help in make the communication positive. Linguistic- Language barrier is figurative phrase that is used mainly related to linguistic barriers. The language is required for any communication even the people withthespeech impairments to communicate with brail and sign language. In addition to this, communication becomes complex in situations where individuals do not understand the language of each other’s. Aninabilitytobecommunicateusinglanguageknownaslanguagebarriertothe communications. Strategies for overcoming communication barriers Hotel manager of Jetwing Hotels Limited can overcome communication barriers by adopting such strategies: Strategies for perception barriers: Hotel managers should carefully analyse perception of public and should work to improve them as well as should also focus on other people by understanding better in order to gather knowledge. They should overcome such barrier by imagining different situations along with reaction of public at market place. Strategies for effective communication:By focusing on issues as well as preparing for reaction of public. It can be overcome by using affirming responses along with formulating and interpreting flexible strategies to general public, the managers of selected hotel can overcome barrier and promote securities that they provide. For physical barriers- It is related to natural and environmental condition that act as barrier in communication in order to sending message from sender to the receiver. The culture plays a necessary role in shaping style of communication.Communication, negotiation as well as culture are inter related to each other in terms of influence. Culture provides implicit knowledge and how to behave in different situations. Communication plays important role in cultural influences and helps in driving patterns for individual changes. There are various cultural factors such as authority, credibility, emotional control, information, communication skills, time period and so on. All such factors have great influence in communication as well as negotiation while promoting facilities along with securities provided by Jetwing Hotels Limited in market place of Colombo, Sri Lanka.. CONCLUSION As per the poster it can be concluded that communication plays crucial role in promotion by exchanging information, ideas with general public. Different organisations faces different challenges such as market repositioning, differences of perception and so on. Barriers related to understanding accurate perception, verbal communication and at the same time formulate various strategies to overcome them. There are various cultural factors which influences communication as well as negotiation. 3
