Project Management for Health Professionals
Medication Administration Safety
This guide is intended to be read in conjunction with the following template to assist
with the development of a Project Plan (PP) for Assessment 2 of Unit CNA613.
Remove the Guide from the front of your final document.
The project for this Assessment 2 is based on a need in your work environment,
however the project will not be executed as part of this assessment. This template
has been developed specifically for the submission of the Project Plan for
Assessment 2.
It is assumed that hypothetical approval to develop this Project Plan has come from
steering committee/senior management via the project sponsor after the
acceptance of a preceding Project Proposal.

What is a Project Plan?
A Project Plan is the management document for the project. It is owned, maintained and
utilised by the Steering Committee to ensure the delivery of project outputs/deliverables
and for the realisation of project outcomes.
Why would you develop a Project Plan?
A Project Plan is developed to provide:

an overview of all the project components; how you intend to produce the
outputs/deliverables and a brief description of the roles and responsibilities of
each of the stakeholders;

the project’s sponsor/steering committee/senior management with a
documented framework for the delivery of defined project objectives and the
effective monitoring of the project from start to finish; and

a formalised agreement between the Project Sponsor/Steering
Committee/Senior Management and the Project Manager of what needs to be
delivered and when.
When would you develop a Project Plan?
Approval to develop a Project Plan for a small project may come from senior
management or be obtained from the acceptance or approval of a preceding stage
such as a Project Proposal, or Project Business Case.
What you need before you start:

Agreement to proceed with the development of the Project Plan from the
Project Sponsor. (Assume this has already been received.)

Knowledge and understanding of project planning, scope definition,
stakeholder identification, risk identification and the development of work
breakdown structures.

Awareness of the organisation’s corporate strategies &/or goals.
What you will have when you are finished:
A complete Project Plan for a project that is ready for acceptance by the Project
Sponsor or Project Steering Committee.
How to use this template?
The template contains sections which may be developed at many levels of detail
depending upon the individual project.
What is the meaning of the different text styles
Several different text styles have been used within the template, as follows:
Text in italics and in green is intended to provide a guide as to the kind of
information that can be included in a section and to what types of projects it may
be applicable. Please ensure all italics and examples are removed before submitting
your completed Project plan for
Assessment 2. Text in normal font is intended as
examples.
Text in Blue italics is the Assessment task content required. Text in Red italics are
examples. Remove all Blue and Red italics prior to submitting your assessment.
Table of Contents
NB: The Table of Contents (TOC) uses the MS Word headings Styles “Heading 1” &
“Heading 2” to identify the headings to be used within the TOC.
Each section is separated with a section break. This allows the use of smart
headers and changing from Portrait to Landscape page layouts. Use the show/hide
switch “¶” (or Ctrl+* (Microsoft users)) to toggle the formatting information on/off.
It is strongly recommended to maintain the template’s headings as they are.
Word Count:
Provide a word count for each section where a word count is stipulated. This should
be with [Square brackets] located at the end of each section i.e. [Word count =
NNN].
This will not be included in the word count.

Executive Summary
1. Executive Summary
Medication is a critical requirement that is provided to the people falling ill
due to various conditions. While some medications are basic, some are
very much critical and even a small wrong dosage of medication can lead
to disastrous consequences. It has been reported that various nursing and
associate medical staff often administer wrong medication to patients in
the absence of designated doctors and as a result, the patients become
more sick or even die. This situation needs to be controlled in order to
ensure the patients always receive the right medication in the hospitals.

Executive Summary
2. Overview
2.1. Project Title
The title of the project is training of medical and nursing staff regarding
medication administration safety.
2.2. Project Background
According to studies all around the world, there are thousands of cases
where patients die or get further ill due to incorporation of wrong
medications during treatment (Davies
et al. 2019). In the absence of
doctors, the medical staff including nurses are allowed to incorporate
medication on the patients as per requirements. However, due to lack of
sufficient knowledge, these staff and nurses may incorporate wrong
medications that can significantly affect the health of the patient
negatively that can even lead to the death of the patients (Mikhail,
Grantham and King 2019). This problem needs to be addressed with
appropriate training must be provided to the nursing staff regarding
correct administration of medication during the absence of the designated
doctor(s). In order to address these problems, a training program can be
initiated that will aim to provide the nursing and other medical staff with
suitable training and demonstration of proper medication administration to
the patients.
2.3. Project Problem Statement & Project Goal
2.3.1. Project Problem Statement
The main problem statement regarding the project is that the nursing and
medical staff often have poor or no knowledge of appropriate medication
as they often administer wrong medication to the patients (Macdonald
2017).
2.3.2. Project Goal
The goal of this project is to ensure minimisation of administering wrong
medication to the patients in the hospitals.
2.4. Objective(s)
The objective of this project is to provide the nurses and other medical
staff with suitable training regarding proper administration of medicine to
the patients in the hospital.
2.5. Output(s) (Deliverables)
The output of this project is the added knowledge for the nurses regarding
administration of right medication to the patients in the hospital.

Communications & Stakeholder Management Plans
2.6. Outcome(s)
The expected outcome of this project is less or zero number of cases in
hospitals in the administration of wrong medication on the patients
admitted to the hospital.
2.7. Exclusions
Assignment of nurses in various duties in the hospital is out of scope and
excluded from the project.
2.8. Assumptions and Constraints
2.8.1. Assumptions
It has been assumed that there will be significant response from the
hospitals and they will allow their nurses to go through the training
procedure.
2.8.2. Constraints
The main constraint for the project is that the nurses themselves may not
be eager to take part in the training and they need to be convinced to go
through the program.
3. Scope & Time Management Plans
3.1. Methodology of Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)
and Activities
The work breakdown structure of the project can be developed by breaking
down the activities of the project into separate work packages and linking
them to each other in the appropriate chronological order (Preston, Leone-
Sheehan and Keys 2019). This is to be done such that there is a continuous
flow of work packages that can be executed one after the other in the right
order throughout the course of the project.
