INTRODUCTION
Personal and development plan consists to the activities which improves self knowledge
and skills of an individual. It is the process by which an organisation and an individual is
engaged with learning in order to meet desired goals and challenges. ; . It is associated with the
development requirements of an individual as well as a group or institution. Along with this,
professional skills are related to coaching and counselling staff in order to support them to learn
their own learning and development requirements. Hotel Marriott is chosen organisation in this
assignment which is one of the largest hotels in the UK. The brand has 552 hotels across the
world. In this report, PPD plan is created for an individual at specific position in order to know
the areas where he/she needs to focus on. Various types of self-managed approaches and their
benefits along with own learning aim and objectives are also defined in this report. At last, there
will be a discussion on work based problems and different time management strategies.
TASK 1
1.1 Approaches of self-managed learning
Self-managed learning is the way by which individuals can manage their own learning. It
means that companies have to adopt self-managed programmes that fit in their framework. Self-
managed learning can also ensure that staff is developing in certain direction and individuals take
the responsibility of decisions about when, where, how and what they will learn.
Below mentioned are some approaches of self-managed learning programmes like: Seminars and conferences – It is the most effective tool of self-managed learning. It
helps people as they can become more confident in speaking at the public place. If Hotel
Marriott conducts seminars and conferences, it can develop presentation skills of their
employees which are mostly needed in the business organisations. Internet – Self-managed learning can also be done through all internet tools. In the
modern world, there are many software are rapidly increasing which are being used in
education and training of employees in Hotel Marriott. With the help of internal, a person
can gain plenty of information as there are various videos and posts are uploaded on net;
with this an individual can acquire many skills and competencies. every day.

 Social media – This is another platform of self-managed learning that is the part of
internet. Many people are connected through internet of various culture and nature as
they can learn from social media very easily.
1.2 Ways of personal and professional learning for long term
Lifelong learning plays an important in better and effective growth of an individual. In
Hotel Marriott, employees have to develop new ideas and need to be innovative that helps them
in their growth and development. So, as they need to learn certain tools and techniques that how
to focused on life long learning. There are some of the major ways given which help in long
term learning in context of personal and professional development. These are stated as follows:
 An individual needs to read books, newspapers, journals and web-blogs. They can
provide the right direction to people as they could gain more knowledge and skills for life
long purpose.
 There are various people who are spending their time on social media. This can provide
information about social things which is too indispensable for personal growth and
development.
 An individual have to take participate in social and cultural activities; where he or she
can learn various aspects of life.
 SWOT analysis is also an important tool in order to evaluate the strengths, weaknesses,
opportunities and threats of the person. By that the same, such person can identify areas
on which he has to work.
 Managers of Hotel Marriott needs to conduct seminars and conferences so as they
employees can participate in them. This can also a effective way for lifelong learning
because it is the way through which an individual is interacted with many people.
 Employers also forces their employees to use internet where they can explore their skills
and competencies effectively.
 Internet is also an important tool with which an individual can learn a lot of things and
gain more information whatever he or she wants.
1.3 Advantages of self-managed learning
Self-managed learning is assistive in providing information and knowledge from various
resources with an aim to attain goals and objectives of company in an effective manner. It is very

essential for the growth and development of an individual and organisation. For example: if
Hotel Marriott has well skilled employees, it can easily achieve competitive advantage and
success. Therefore, self-managed learning is beneficial for both; an individual or a business.
Benefits to an individual - A person can get comfortable and easy life with the help of
self-managed learning. Self managed learning can be helpful for an individual in enhancing
competitiveness over the public. it is also support to the person in setting a phase that could be
used by such person in various situations of life. With this, a person can generate positive
attitude and leadership skills among himself which could help him or her to gain higher
positions.
Benefits to an organisation – Self managed learning is also beneficial for the firm. With
this it can gain more qualified and skilled employees in the respect of extending growth and
success of the company. Hotel Marriott can conduct an impressive recruitment procedure to hire
the best people whose skills and abilities are matched with the criteria of the company. . Along
with this, business entities conduct training and development assistance which is important in
the decision making process of the company.

4.1 Various solutions related with work based problems
Managers of Hotel Marriott, are faced many problems and issues among employees. Such
people are not able to work together with this organisation cannot achieve its goals and
objectives. Work-based problems also impact on business environment and reduce productivity
of the company. So that that is needed to the firm to handle and manage such issues in an
effective manner and make efforts to resolve them. There are given following work based
problems of the company: -
In many business organisations, harassment and bullying is faced by many employees; it is
treated as the organisational discipline (Maskit, 2011). This can also impact on working style and
efficiency of an individual.
Discrimination is also a big issue that is done at many places. It is mostly based upon sex, age,
colour and other things. Discrimination also increasing the feeling of jealously of among staff
members; this effects their performance and productivity.

Appraisals – Employees are facing the problem of appraisals and rewards. If staff members are
not getting equal remuneration and appraisals; as they don't prefer to such kind of business
organisations.
Solutions: -
Managers needs to develop effective and accurate strategies and policies in order to
reduce all these work-based problems. A leader have to maintain a proper discipline over the
organisation for decreasing harassment and bullying. If any one found such kind of activity then
appropriate punishment. To avoid discrimination the UK government made a law in 2003, under
this, if any manager is doing such type of activity will going to be punished as per the law.
4.2 Various communication styles
Communication is the way of sending and receiving information from each other over the
business organisation. An effective communication process helps managers and employees as
they can proper decisions for the betterment of the company. Some of the major communication
styles that are used in Hotel Marriott in their PPD plan, such are stated as follow:- Assertive style – It is the most effective and healthiest style of communication. When an
individual is assertive, such person develop the confidence among themselves without
resorting games or manipulation (Van Driel and Berry, 2012).
 The aggressive style – The style is all about winning often at someone else's expenses.
Such person behaves as their needs are more important as though they have more rights
and contribution across the organisation rather than other people.
4.3 Evaluate the time management strategies
At the time of personal and professional development plan, time management is very
much important. But it is not an easy tasks, sometimes it becomes to difficult for managers to
persuade all employee to complete all work on time. So as they need to develop some strategies
for time management, such are as follow: -
 Business managers needs to organised all activities, operations and tasks in proper
manner. For effective utilisation of resources, business entities have to create a time
schedule (Forte and Flores, 2014). In addition, proper formate supports an employee in
order to set a particular time for a single task.
 They need to make a proper record of all activities and operations; this will help
managers to achieve growth and success from competitive market.

 Apart from this, employers also should set their priorities and manage work accordingly.
It means, work is done on the basis of their priorities and given time schedule.

3.1 Activities and process which are used in implementing plan
There are given following activities and process that is useful in implementation the
personal and professional development plan:- Firstly, an individual or an organisation needs to establish the purpose of any
development activity that needs to be identified. This is done in order to gain awareness
of current standing or position and future potentials of the company. In Hotel Marriott,
managers needs to link their plan to organisational needs as much as possible. Apart from
this, personal and professional development plan also involves development needs of an
individual; this will help to emerge from intended or actual new tasks and responsibilities
(Olsen, 2015). Identification of learning opportunities and formulate the action plan – After that,
managers need to identify their learning skills and knowledge. There are many learning,
such as- education, training and development. This will help an individual in order to
explore his or her abilities and competencies. Apart from this, managers of Hotel Marriott
needs to formulate an action plan in order to set development objectives. These needs to
be SMART: specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time bound.

 Undertake the development- In order to put the plan into action, manager needs to create
a strategy according to their choice. In addition to training courses, options involves work
shadowing, job rotation, project work, networking and community involvement.
 Implementation and evaluation – At last, the plan is implemented in business
organisation and it is essential for all members to follow up the guidelines of PPD plan.
After that, progress of PPD plan is evaluated by the senior managers. It provides a key
lead for the next stage of the continuing cycle.
3.2 Documents for activities of development
Below mentioned these activities which are included in growth and development of an
individual, such are stated as follow: - Employees training – Training and development assistance is the most important part of
PPD plan. In Hotel Marriott, training is provided to staff members for improving their
current skills and abilities; this will help a company to achieve its goals and objectives
from target market. Along with this, highly educated and well skilled staff members are
liable in order to take effective decisions and actions (Brody and Hadar, 2011). Supervising and controlling – Higher authorities and senior managers are controlling all
activities and operations which are included in personal and professional development
plan.
 Consultation – It is responsibility of managers of Hotel Marriott to take a proper review
and measurement of completed work to find out its issues and conflicts.
3.3 Reflection on own learning
Own learning is an essential task for an individual; this can be derived from many
components. Improvement and development is must because it supports to the clear vision of all
goals and objectives. Along with this, a person have their own aims and targets which needs to
be achieved in a certain time period. Hotel Marriott hire me on the basis of my skills and
abilities. From now, my main aim is to provide best services to the customers in a certain period
of time. My managers are very supportive and positive for me as they can provide me training
and development assistance in the starting of my job. They conduct a induction and orientation
programmer for me so as it get familiar to all employees and managers. This will also helps me
so as now I can easily communicate with them properly. Due to the training sessions, I was

worked on my communication and leadership skills; I also focused on my decision making
activities. So as now I can easily deal with people in an effective manner.
3.4 Development plan that is based on evaluation and feedback
Feedback of everything is too indispensable because it is helpful in improvising the
various activities and workforce in the business organisation. By gaining, timely review and
feedback I can easily develop my skills and way of talking with others. This will assistive me as
I can upgrade my communication skills. Along with this, feedback from others helps in
promoting all strengths and weaknesses; so as I can work upon such behavioural issues. My
hesitation and nervousness is also reducing that I can easily convey or influence to anyone.
CONCLUSION
Form the above mentioned report, it has been concluded that personal and professional
development plan is the need of each and every individual. It helps in developing knowledge and
skills of such person. Along with this, different tools, techniques, methods are used for self
managed learning. The report reflects upon own learning requirements and development needs.
SWOT analysis is also can be done in order to identify strength, weaknesses, opportunities and
threats of an individual. PDP plan is created for achieving desired goals and objectives of the
person.
