ASSESSMENT 1- Developing innovative
organisations
To complete this assessment you need to review:
Study Guide: Topic 1
Reading 1: ‘Managing Change and innovation’
This assessment has TWO parts
Part A: Theory questions
Answer the following questions by referring to the research and applying your
own ideas. You must reference the research using the Harvard referencing
style.
1. What do you understand by the term ‘innovation’?
The term innovation refers to the exhibition of a new idea or creative thought in
the form of a new system or process or device. Very often, an innovation is linked
with an improvement over a currently existing system or device with enhanced
performance, features and other attributes. For instance, development of mobile
phone is an innovation that is an upgrade over the existing landline telephones as
it is much superior and has more features than its predecessor.
2. What is the difference between creativity and innovation?
While creativity and innovation are both similar terms in terms of the meaning,
both are different in actual sense. Creativity is mostly related to imagination
whereas innovation is related to implementation. In other words, creativity
remains within the boundary of the human mind whereas innovation breaks off the
barrier of the human mind and gets expressed in a real life implementation.
However, there is a strong relationship between creativity and innovation. Without
creativity, there cannot be any innovation i.e. innovation is the end product of
creativity. While not all creative ideas are implemented in the form of innovation,
without creative idea, there cannot be any new innovation.

3. Explain the three types of organisational variables that affect innovation. Give
examples.
The three types of organisational variables that innovation are structural variables,
cultural variables and human resource variables. These variables are explained as
follows.
Structural Variables – The structural variables of an organisation include the basic
structural components of the organisation including the resources, organisation
structure and communication between various units of the organisational
operations. For example, in a manufacturing company, the structural variables
include funds and the raw materials required for the manufacturing of the
products. Moreover, for the purpose of innovation, funding must be available along
with strong structural variables that support the innovation process.
Cultural Variables – The cultural variables of an organisation significantly affect
innovation of any organisation. The main characteristics of cultural variables of an
organisation include tolerance of the impractical and acceptance of ambiguity.
Both of these characteristics, although appear to be meaningless at first, might
allow creativity and lead to new innovations for the organisation. For example,
Steve Jobs of Apple nurtured with his impractical and ambiguous ideas that
ultimately led him to innovate the iPhone.
Human Resource Variables – Human resource variables are very important for any
organisation in terms of innovation as well as operations. High quality training to
the employees and job security can lead to the development of creative thoughts
that in turn can help to develop new innovations for the organisation. For example,
for any organisation, proper training helps to raise the existing skills of an
employee to such an extent that he is able to develop new creative thoughts that
might lead to new innovations.
