INTRODUCTION
According to Starbucks. Operations and management deals with the concept of
management and different types of trading operations carried out in the administration
Management. It is the area of administrations related with the art and guiding the process of
manufacturing products and work and implementing further in the trade operations . Operational
management is the process of getting things done through the operations . It determines what are
the different tasks carried out in an operational team through the different team members. It
includes different types of strategies related with planning , organizing, directing,
controlling ,staffing and coordinating. Operational management wants manager to control over
the subordinates, team members and other groups related with operations through the managerial
development process. In operational management there are different plans like designing of
products, operation scheming, administration quality, production preparation and procurement.

1.1 Definition and comparison of different roles of leaders and managers by giving examples
from Starbucks.
Basically Starbucks is the coffee company that has been producing best quality of Arabic
coffee consisting rich coca and pleasant odour through out the world. It has established its
different branches of coffee stores across globally with the wide variety of challenges and
enormous competition in the market scenario (Prajogo, 2012 ).
Following are the certain comparisons and roles of managers and leaders with respect to star
bucks:-
Leaders are the process of influence between the leader and those who are followers.
Manger is the person who directs the whole organization according to the priorities and
responsibilities of different groups at the administrator level. Leader is the highest power among
the particular or specific team in the organization whereas manager owns the highest power in
the overall organization. Manager appoints the leader but leader gives guidance and directions to
his team. It is not possible for a manager to take responsibility of the complete organization so
for that reason the manager appoints some leaders to different sub committees in order to lessen
out the burden and concentrate other important work of the organization. The most important
character of the leader is the process of encouraging and motivating the team members and

showing them the right path of decision making. They are the follower and managers have the
power of influencing people.
Roles of leaders and managers:-
There are different types of leaders prevailing in the industry. According to that they
possess different types of roles and responsibility. Democratic leaders define their strategy by
providing complete freedom in the whole team among the team member's. Authoritative leaders
possessing strong and tough powers and accordingly they decide their strategy of leadership.
They are hard core leaders . Participative leaders giving their full involvement among the team
members according to the different types of roles, difficulties and tasks. They are also known an
cooperative leaders because of their complete cooperation for the team. The managerial role is
based on plans and strategies (Jabbour, 2013).
1.2 Different theories and models of approach in situational, system and contingency leadership
According to Starbucks , there are different approaches of leadership theories. Theory
determines the actual and realistic findings of study in order to showing in a practical situation.
Contingency approach is determined by Fielder's by giving out or providing
professionalism or contingency conceptualization. It describes the affectivity of leadership
according to the condition or shows the situational analysis of leadership. For example type of
work, personalty of leaders and foundation of the group or how the group is generated. The basic
sole criteria of this theory is to focus only on the main part of the conflict rather than the full
description of an issue. It envisages on leadership personality trait, psychology and prediction
power. But on the same time if the situations are indefinable then it just predict the matter. In this
theory the LPC model is based on the testing of organizational righteousness or integrity.
Situational leadership approach is given by Kenneth Blanchard and Paul heresy. It is
related with problems or situations that leaders experienced. It is based on the fact that when
both the leaders and manages adopted various methods of developing organization according to
which style is adjusted or right for influencing the development of the followers . In this type of
leadership the changing of different methods should be adopted by leader itself not by the
followers. In order to meet the objectives of the organizations the mode of direction may vary
continually. In this the leader supervise the people by giving advice, directions and taking

decisions. This is the seller or coaching based theory. Selling is done by selling of ideas,
thoughts, and guidance, in return by getting inputs or best results by the employees. These are
the different approaches of contingency and situational theories in order to make out best
development among the organizational members.
1.3 Strengths and weaknesses of situational leadership approach.
According to this theory , it provides encouragement and motivation among employees in
order take responsibility for their independent or self activities and decisions. For professional
and smart followers it provides an outstanding vision of fulfilment by giving motivation and
indulging to perform high-grade in order to increase production. Their is huge amount of trust
and worthy to followers by leaders and encouraged to do better work (Reeve, 2011 )
There are some negative points of this leadership. This class of leadership is widely open
to ill-usage by using abusive language. In this, the leader provide his own tasks to the followers
and want them to complete his task but the credit goes to leader only not to the follower.
Efficacious leaders should understand their responsibility according to the conditions or tasks
and manage the situations according to the tasks in order to get better results . In some situations
the leaders adopt short term trouble resolution conceptualization and by how they cannot make
valuable decisions among team member's. Above these are strong and weak points of this theory.
1.4 Analyse different theories and approaches and their effectiveness in Starbucks.
According to Starbucks there are different theories and approaches in order to meet
organizational goals and objectives.
Task oriented leadership :- this leadership is based on behavioural science in which the
complete focus of leader is on tasks which are required in order to compete organizational goals
and objectives or to obtain specific performance quality standards.
System leadership :- this type of leadership gives the isolated method in order to visualize the
organizational structure. Basically it consists of natural action or activity, mutuality and links
between the administration and the surroundings. It focusses on how environment effects the
administration framework and structure, environmental variations in the organization. Wider
aspect of visualization of administrative attributes.
These theories are highly effective to Starbucks by providing time frames in order to
manage time according to the situation. They are helpful in corporate values and business laws.
It provides an idea to corporate societal responsibility. It gives motivation and encouragement

company in a best way. Provides customer satisfaction . It adopts some quality control methods
and culture. It provides maintenance and hard line principals. It promised for doing the role of

As far as mangers are concerned , they provide some training programmes in order to give
training to employees in best possible way. It make some strategies for the development of the
company by adopting some advance methods of technology in coffee production. Promotion of
coffee harvesting methods in order to engage more workers. Promotion of biological variety . It
provides sustainable environmental development. They adopt some business generalization and
corporate worth. Provides missionary and visionary statements.
Leaders also plays a very important role in context of operational management. They
provide decision making idea among the followers. They provide motivational and situational
upbringings. They provide encouragement between the workers for doing best work and giving
better results. They give their full involvement in organization team with the help of support and
decision making criteria. These are the above roles of managers and leaders in order to run the
organization .

and decision making by leaders and managers
According to Starbucks business environment is the combined of extrinsic and intrinsic
factors that affects the trade. These factors simultaneously effects the business .
External factors includes:-
POLITICAL FACTORS – it includes all the government policies rules and regulations that
effects the business environment. For an instance laws, obstruction, indirect tax, state of war
etc.
MACRO ECONOMIC FACTORS – These components influences the overall economical
condition . They are foreign exchange rates, suspension, depressions, unemployment rates , user
monetary fund rate etc. ( Moormann, 2010).
MICRO ECONOMIC FACTORS – It can influences the business through demand, supply,
production, size of the market, whole selling and retailing.
SOCIETAL FACTORS – It consists of social and cultural aspects of the business in relation
with the societal changes like changing trends in fashionable clothes , environmental changes,
organic foods. It should be kept in mid with the consideration of society.
TECHNOLOGIAL FACTORS – These factors consists of implementing latest technology
according to the changes by innovating advance methods . Business can be improves bu
adopting the latest highly advance technology.
Internal factors include -
Internal factors are the characteristics trait of motivational, hard working and talent. Motivation
is done by encouraging and appreciating workers. Hard work is the key to success , it is carried
out by encouraging people in order to achieve aims and objects in the organization for the

applications of these factors:-
Determination of opportunities and threats – it help in detailed analysis chances and hazards.
It helps to the business world to attain aims and objectives and foster the development.
