INTRODUCTION
Leadership is quality which influence person or different groups and community to
perform their task effectively (Zhu 2019). Organisation plays an important role in managing the
work effectively so that company aim can be achieved in given time frame. Manager have
responsibility to manage and control various business operation smoothly and in well defined
manner. In this present report Corus has been chosen which is a part of TATA steel group and it
is a six largest steel producer in world. This report covers various elements which include
comparison of different roles and responsibility of leaders. It also help to figure out various roles
and responsibilities of managers to support organisation. There are various theory and model use
in project to justify the statement. Beside this, report also covers various factor which effect the
business environment and decision making by leaders and managers.
TASK 1
P1 Determine and analyse the different kind of duty and characteristics of a leader and managers
Leaders & mangers have well-defined role in company which help company to fulfil their
task and objectives effectively. Every organization turn to be successful because of their leaders
and managers which are the reason behind handling the operations activities in order to make
effective decision to grow and expand their business activities. Leaders &managers of
organisation have different job and duties towards company.
Leaders: It is a individual who take fist step and promote the individuals to execute in
order to achieve organizational goals and objective in limited time frame.. As the leader of corus
steels is optimistic which help in facing the obstacles and problems effectively. Leaders should
have initiative approach because he is the individual who take responsibilities and action for
betterment of organisation.
A leaders is a person who influences a group of people towards the achievement of a
goal (Carr-Ruffino, 2019). A leader is individual who set the example for employees who are
working in the organisation and motivate them to achieve organisation goals.
A person who hold the dominant or superior position within the organisation or a
particular field is known as a leader (Dampson and Edwards2019). A leader must be qualified
and must have influenced in organisation in order to motivate employees.

Function of leader:
 Function of leader is to assist the squad members and render the direction in order to
carry out the business activity which are established by organisation of Corus to achieve
them effectively.
 It enhance in improving better performance of employees and make them to face
situation and able solve the difficulty which occur in organisation.
 Leader help in keeping track of various team associate and cater ideas to enhance their
performance which is required to fulfil the target.
Managers : It is an individual who take charge of organisation and also make sure that evry
employee perform there duties effectively (Burrell 2019). For management of Corus steel have
to focus on making proper policies and so that company can capture large market share as well
as gain huge profit. Leader or manager have trained employees and make secure working
environment which leads to development and growth opportunities for business venture.
Definition of management: Management can be defined as the process of administration
and controlling the affair of the organisation irrespective of its nature and type of the
organisation (Tiwari and Nafees 2019). For example the manager have the responsibility to
manage the employees and operation whereas leader have the responsibility to motivate the
people to accomplish the goal.
Management is an art to manage the employees the for developing the organisation
growth and development (Tran 2019). It is consider as the backbone of the organisation which
look after the overall activities in the organisation. For instance manages have to track the
employees performance and make sure that individual perform activities in the given time
period. In the case of leaders they take risk and find out the new opportunities to gain
competitive advantages in the market.
There are some duties of Corus steel manager which are performed in organisation are stated
below:
 individual should perform the assigned duties such as developing annual report maintain
training and development for employees, generate skill full employees and should reduce
employees grievances in Corus steel.

them monthly training sessions. Managers should have review programme so that

As the leader as well as manger have various kinds of role and duties which are important
to fulfil the demand of company. The main purpose of leader is to motivate their teammate to
perform effectively in organisation (Lane2019). Leaders must be influence and should maintain
the personality so that employees follow the footsteps of their leaders. Where as manager is
accountable for all the day to day activities in organisation. Managers tend to develop effective
plan which help business firm to accomplish goals and target. There are various kind of function
of leader and manager which can analysed down below.
 There is a situation where company have to manufacture 100 tonnes of steels which a
week so that company can fulfil the urgent requirement of market demand. In this present
scenario Corus manager can make quality decision and inform employees to make
overtime to complete the demand of market . In this scenario leadership plays an vital
role where leader can motivate employees of Corus steel and fulfil the urgent
requirement.
 In another situation there is a labour strikes occur in Corus steel and do not have
sufficient material require for further processing. Due to this company can meet the
demand of clients in well in given time. In this case, it is the prime duty of manager to act
wisely and take effective decision so that production does not get effected. Role of leader
also place an important role to encourage and motivate employees to perform in a
effective manner so that determine goal can achieve.
From the above analyses it has been figure out that leader as well as manager have vital
role in business activities and also maintain the situation and other grievances present in
organisation. Every one have the same aim to expand business and to capture large audience.
P3. Using various models as theories in organisation
Leadership in management is a crucial process which include process of influence
employees working in organisation. Leadership must be effective so that it can reduce conflicts
among members,it also guide in guiding clear vision and shows the right path in best possible
way. There are various kinds of leadership theory which are explained below:

Contingency leadership theory: This theory is closely related to the situational
approach and it was proposed by Fred Edward Fiedler in year 1964. it emphasis on personality in
which management operates. In the context of Corus steel it is important to make effective
polices so that it can help in minimize the cost and improve the production which help in
generating huge profit. Company can choose task orientated style or people orientated style
according to situation and improve employees capability and skill.
Situational leadership: It is a style in which company managers of leaders should fit in
according the situation for betterment of firm. In this meth do leader have it change it working to
that employees have trust towards their superiors. Situational leadership style have been used by
Corus steel to improve their production and quality offering. Thorough this company will have
positive environment as well as proper hierarchy in organisation which enhance the employees
capability.
System leadership theory: This type of leadership style have proper structure and
maintain networks among various employees at different levels of system. It have motive to
cover overall organisation growth and make sustainable business model. It include four
components, which are general process, system base strategies and action method. Corus steel
used organized work and techniques to complete their task in well defined manner.

Operational administration includes different tools and techniques which are used by
companies. This tool is basically used to keep record of revenue being earned by company and
cost associated with it. In concerned with Corus steel this company is a part of TATA group. It
deals with steel and its headquarters are located in UK.
Transportation Function: Transportation function is related to timely and proper
transportation of goods to its required destination. Corus steel being a part of TATA group
always ensures that there transportation function is carried on properly with great emphasis on
time and quality.
Production Function: Production Function is a core function of every company. As this
function entails that usage of raw material is done, processes applied on it and then final

outcomes are drawn from it. Corus steel lays emphasis on maintenance of effective production
system. This is beneficial for both company and its employees.
Six Sigma: Six sigma is a very famous model which was invented by Bill Smith in 1980.
The main reason behind forming this model was maintenance of quality by companies engaged
in production (Bush, Bell and Middlewood 2019). In this method various defects are pointed out
and attempts are made to remove those defects. Corus steel is also focussing on applying six
sigma model to their everyday protection as they are mainly concerned with the quality and not
quantity of production. If there are some repetitive defects which appear again and again then
their root cause is identified and tried to be corrected.
Just in Time approach: Just in time is a approach followed by many companies where
the production function is performed only when there is need. Which basically means that
products are made only when orders are received. In context of Corus steel this approach is
basically used whenever order is received then only production starts. This helps company in not
having piled up inventory with them. Inventory always leads to addition of cost to company for
their storage and maintenance.
Total Quality Management: TQM approach is concerned with reducing errors and
defects in production function. Corus steel lays down importance on improving experience of its
customers. Training is provided to employees and efforts are made that their speed is increased
with the maintenance of overall quality also. Having a skilled and trained workforce is very
important for timely and proper completion of various functions.
Role played by leader: Leaders play a very essential role in overall management of the
working in organisation. If a leader is able to influence it's team members and able to make them
work in required manner then this will lead to proper functioning. In Corus steel also all leaders
are concerned with ensuring that all its employees are working up-to fullest of their capacity.

reduction in cost which will help in increasing overall profitability of company. Corus steel
always tries to minimize its cost in various operations. Cost can be reduced there will be
effectiveness and increased efficiency in operations of company .
Enhancing overall Productivity: Every company's main aim is to increase its
profitability. As increasing trend of profits will only help a company to move towards growth.
Corus steel as a steel company always makes attempts to provide its employees with requisite
training they need to perform their job in a better way.
Quality Management: Quality is the differentiating feature of every company which
helps it to create its brand value. Corus steel is under TATA group which already has an existing
brand image. So this increases their responsibility more to maintain this image. For this company
is always concern that if it increases cost then also no compromise is made in terms of quality

company as well decision making of top management and leaders. It mainly involve two
component which are internal and external. Both factors are briefly explained down below.
Human resources: Company consider employees as as their valuable assets which are
which motivated them to perform their task effectively so that organisation can achieve their
goals. If the responsibility of HR to hire the best talent so that production activities can be
improve employees can reduce the wastage by their skill and talent. In the context of Corus, HR
must provide proper training and development secessions to their workers to enhance their
capability. Top level management should hire experience employees because they have
knowledge and past experience about work.

and also help in making effective forecasting to reduce the risk. It also help in making healthy

have to meet changing demands of customers. So it is important to have effective strategies to
capture larger audience. As per Corus steel, it is important to have current information of market
as well as they can understand the customers needs as offer product as per the requirement.
Company can take feedback from customers and make improvement in service to gain trust as
loyalty of consumers.
Legal factors: These are the factor which are indicates how law can effect the business
operation and reaction of customers. Production, product logistic, profitability margin and
viability of certain markets are all examples of things which may be motivated by legal factors.
Along with this it include various regulations and law which determine the negative and positive
aspect of market and frame decision of management of company operating their business
internationally. In the case of Corus steel, it has been analysed that manager should make
effective decision which can improve the working culture of organisation. And leaders should
make quality decision so that employees feel empowered and motive towards their task.

workers are efficacious it turn out to be effective. Advancement of technology help organisation
to achieve their organisation goals (Nielsen 2019). For Corus steel, manager and leaders are
perpetually looking for improvement and updates within the technical surroundings. In this way,
they not only improve their trading operations but, they will also be well conscious of business
transformational phase. This will assist innovative plan of action to grow rapidly in steel
business and able to make more customer base.
Corporate social responsibility: Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a self
regulating business model which help company to be social accountable to its stakeholders and
also to the public. By the help of corporate social responsibility it is also called corporate
citizenship where company have to serve the society for the betterment. For the company like
Corus Steel it important for a manager to serve the society where every one have equal
opportunities to grow and expand. The CSR activity of Corus Steel as they provide education,
healthcare, water , electricity and food to the people who are in need and can afford the basic
necessity for living. The CSR activity develop the brand image and goodwill in the market which
help organisation to grow and expand in future.

From the above mentioned report it has been clear that, in competitive industry, business
should use resources properly such as skills and knowledge. It has been further described that
company must operation in organisation are crucial for the company to meet their target. It is
necessary for manager as well as for leaders to adopt contingency theory which is beneficial for
organisation at every phase of life. In addition to this, leader can make use of transformational
theory because it is more effective from other theories used in company. Manager to keep track
environmental factor and make changes according the trends and consumers preference. By
adopting all these strategies company can achieve their goals effectively and increase their profit
in limited time frame.
