INTRODUCTIONOperation management is a process in which managers create high level efficiency toachieve organisation goals (Heizer, Render and Munson, 2017). It refers to the process ofconverting raw materials into finished product by maximum utilization of resources to increaseprofitability. Present report is based on ASDA which is a supermarket retailer. Its operatingincome is £ 791.7 million.Report will contain the roles and responsibilities of a leader andmanager in different situation, importance of operation management in achieving organisationalobjectives. Further report will apply various models and approaches. Report will also tell variousfactors of business environment that impact on operational management and decision-making ofleaders and managers.LO 1P1 Roles and characteristics of manager and leadershipManager:Manager is in-charge of doing certain task by using its managerial skills. Amanager is responsible for all the activities performed in the organisation. They are in-charge ofevery department and employees working in department (Reid and Sanders, 2015). Managerperforms all the managerial function such as planning, organising, controlling, directing andstaffing.Leader:A leader is an influencer who influences group of individuals in achievingorganisations goal. A leader is a motivator who motivates employee to perform better. Leaderfollows various leadership style to coordinate employees and focus on organisation objective. Aleader can be manager but manager cannot be a leader. Leader convinces other individuals toaccept decisions.There are different roles and characteristics of a leader and manager of ASDA:BASISROLE OF MANAGERROLE OF LEADERObjectivesLeader creates vision for theemployees of ASDA. Leaders createa picture of what they feel is possibleand inspire employees to changevision into actual objectives. Theymotivate employees to thinksomething bigger (SA and Rica,Manager make goals. Manager ofASDA set goals and measureperformance of employees inachieving organisation objectives.Manager handle the situation whenthere is difficulty in reachingobjectives.1

Manager dividesthe work according to the skills ofemployees. Managers do not makedecisions but stick to the decision ofleader and refine the structure andprocess to achieve goals(Schönsleben, 2018).FocusLeaders of ASDA focuses onmotivating employees and gives thema vision so that employees can turn itinto reality.Manager of ASDA has main focus onperformance of employees of alldepartment and motivating them bygiving rewards to achieve goal as fastas possible.RiskLeaders of ASDA want to try andimplement new things. Leaders wantto take risk and do not fear fromfailure.Managers of ASDA wants tominimize risk and fear from failure.They control or avoid problems ratherthen facing them.TimeAs a leaders creates a vision for theASDA company, it requires longtime. Leaders are always motivated todo something bid which needs moretime. Thus leaders think for long termwhich benefit the company ingrowing (Ravindran, 2016).Managers of ASDA work for shortterm goals. They think and make shortterm strategies which is used infulfilling short term goals.2
