INTRODUCTION
Operation management is that process which play an important role in the organisation.
This is the set of different activities and functions which mainly converts inputs into potential
outputs. It help in earning large amount of value by distributing various types of products and
services in proper manner. Operation management describes different operational activities
which are same in characteristics that includes planning, places, layouts, coordinating,
controlling, production, manufacturing and operational strategy that are linked with business
strategy in appropriate manner (Bahmani-Firouzi and Azizipanah-Abarghooee, 2014). The report
is based on McDonald which is situated in UK in the year of 1940. The main purpose of report is
to understand different theories, approaches of leadership which are discussed.

P1 Define and compare different roles and characteristics of leaders & managers
Managers- A manager are those individuals who have power to hold various
responsibilities of managing and designing task in proper manner and achieve the desired goals
and objectives. After completion of successful goals, it is the role of manager is to develop and
implement accurate strategies and plan the working as per the demand of employees. The
primary function of management which are given by Henry Fayol that are discussed as follows:
 Planning- Managers is those person who mainly work for welfare and benefit of the
company. They plan, develop strategies, required to safe the reaching future goals. This is
necessary for the manager is to identify future situations that will affects the venture and
it is accountable for defining future strategies and functional status of an organisation.
 Organising- It is another duty of manager where they need to organise their workplace in
an effective manner and maintain structure by which activities are aligned properly. They
also recruit and select best suitable employee and gives training to the new candidates so
that they easily understand the roles and responsibilities of each employees and analyse
their work (Bahn, 2013). McDonald manager also organise employees in appropriate
manner by which there are reduction in large disputes and conflicts.
 Leading and commanding- Managers mainly monitor and supervise their work on
regular basis and also motivate them for achieving goals and objectives. It is the duty of
manager is to develop effective plans and policies to their employees so that they

coordinate and commanding in proper way. For example, McDonald manager will make
their plans and goals and convey with their workforce.
Leaders- They are those individuals who have power to deal with different employees on the
basis of required targets. They can encourage employees by using their leadership skills and
share the vision with them. These are some roles of leaders: Monitor- A leader should supervise their employees activities and functions and provide
them necessary information for achieving desired goals and objectives (DeAnna and et.
al., 2010). Decision maker- Leaders have a quality to take decision which are required for their
company welfare and benefits and it will help in gaining profitability. Interpersonal skill- They should have some skills which assist them in communicate
with their employees in proper manner regarding the plans and policies.
Difference between leaders and managers:

P2 Role of leader and function of manager apply in different situational context
The different situation of organisation refers to that condition arises in the company at the
time performing task by the help of several group members. Here are three situation of
organisation which are described as under: Stabilised situation- It can be defined as that condition which mainly hold the stability or
continue the uniformity in the firm for long period of time (Eyal and Haim, Clarizen
Ltd., 2014). Rapid changing condition- It can be referred as that situation which occurs changes but
in quicker manner.

 Slower the intermediate dynamic condition- It can be defined as when certain changes
will arises according to the requirement of customers or market. But there are some
alterations occurs in faster and slow rate.
In McDonald's, there is a situation where slow and medium changes should be followed
all regulations and rules of authorities. The growth of norms and laws are followed by company
in slower way (Hammill and Tanner, 2011). Along with this, it should be seen that various
alterations within organisation team, modification in size of project, alteration in business
situations etc. are occurs in smooth manner and slow changes so that employees are not feel
workload.

McDonald's that are described as under: Contingency theory- This was published by Lorsch and Lawrence in the year of 1967,
they proved that there is no other option for leading and organising firm and also develop
accurate decisions in appropriate manner. Apart from this, all the major course of state
which are relies or uncertain on several extrinsic possible leader (Handschin and
Petroianu, 2012). Therefore, it can seen that contingent leader apply effective leadership
style according to the correct direction. Situational leadership theory- It is that theory which are introduced by Kenneth
Blanchard and Paul Hersey in the 1969 of year. In this theory, this is clearly mentioned
that thee is no single leadership style is helpful for tackle in different situations. They
mainly precede several activities and functions which assist in improving skills of the

team members. The style of leadership must be change on regular basis which help in
fulfil all the requirements within an organisation. McDonald's leaders should take
appropriate decisions on the basis of different situations that can be changed.
 System theory- This approach will proposed by Peter Senge in 1990 and Ludwig von
Bertalanffy in 1954. it is that theory which mainly based on policies and plans of
enterprise which help in deal in different situations. For example, leader of McDonald's
should perform the roles and responsibilities which are necessary that includes
controlling, directing, planning, organising and leading in proper manner (Heizer and
Barry, 2013). This model assist in maintaining discipline at workplace and smooth
running of functions without making any error.

P4 Approaches of operational management and roles of managers and leaders
Management operation refers to that process which maintain and manage different
operations by using some individuals so that they mainly complete each task in effective manner.
Certain approaches can be used for describe roles which are discussed as under: Just in time- According to the approach, tasks and work should be done in the given
time framework. In McDonald's, leaders are mainly responsible for achieving desired
goals and objectives. They should complete each product before last dead line and
deliver goods without making any delay.

 Total quality management- The main purpose of this model is to manage finish quality
in an organisation by which the complaint of customers are reduces for providing best
quality products and services serve to the consumers. McDonald's offer food products so
that they require to attract large number of customers for gives them best quality product.
If goods are not healthy so that it can directly affects on people health (Lind, 2013).
Company manager should monitor or supervise works of their corporation make sure
that foods are prepared for maintaining safety and security. Six sigma- It is the whole collection of various methods and tools which can used for
updated quality of goods and services. Mainly, it is the techniques which assist in
eliminating all faults or defects items which present in food. McDonald's also adopt this
method for managing quality related problems in products and services which offer to
their customers in the market place. Lean production- This method is used for minimising wastage while manufacturing
some goods in an organisation. But manager make sure that this can not affect the
productivity. McDonald's will use such approaches in reducing the amount of wastage
and use these resources for in higher level.
 Queuing- It is one of the leading model of maintaining management operations in the
firm. In this approach, leaders and manager play an important role (López and et. al.,
2015). They used to coordinate various tasks at the time of implementing and executing
performance of employees. McDonald's make sure that managers or leaders have to
organise and coordinate all work operations which related to business towards right
direction in appropriate manner.
There are certain roles of managers and leaders in management operation that are as follows: Planning- There are various plans and policies which can formulate by company
manager so that they have large knowledge towards marketing and preferences of
customers. Total quality management theory is gaining the accurate outcome of manager
planning so all the procedure are designed while implement this.
 Decision making- Decision should be taken by firm employer who mainly works within
an organisation. The work should be done by taking permission to them and also deal
with major issues or problems of an individual in proper manner. Such decisions in six
sigma model must be develop by leaders and managers.

P5 Significance and value of management operations in reaching business objectives
There are some objectives of McDonald's which required to be accomplished and operate
business management plan which help in appropriate manner. There are some aims and
objectives of McDonald's organisation which are as follows: Enhancing sale- Another main objective of McDonald's is to increasing rate of sales rate
so that the whole turnover can be increased. By this, organisation manager is obey to
conduct encouragement strategies for which huge number of civilian are come in UK and
USA to know regarding new products and services. Satisfy customers- The main objective is to satisfy or reach the requirements and
demands of the customers. It is the main reason which are concerned about production
product items according to the choice and preferences of common people so that all the
individual like their goods and willing to buying these goods. Growth- The aim of company is to expand business operations and functions in large
number of countries so that they attracts their customers for gaining high amount of profit
and get success. Maximising profits- The main aim of firm is to gain large amount of profitability by this
they can easily expand their business in another locations and some other places.
 Survival- McDonald's want to survive in large market place where more rivals are
present. This can be analysed that several companies are emerging and offer similar type
of products. In current time period, completion is enhancing day by day and customers
are divided among such entity. An organisation desire to safe and secure their place in the
potential market place.
The importance and value of management operation is assist in reaching the business objectives
of entity that are described. There are some functions of operation management which are as
under: Planning- This is necessary to plan things in preview by which they can easily complete
work in given time period (Leadership Theories. 2017). The major objectives are
prepared and develop by firm manager so that task is finish according to the demand. But
still it is easy to conduct required operations. It is important for McDonald's is to create

plans regarding which or what kind of product should be manufacture different type of
goods. Planning is done by analysing the demand and needs of customers. Organising- It is one of the most essential function which help in managing and
organising employees in better manner. Controlling- This is third step where staff members are control and manage all required
activities and functions of an organisation. It help in supervising and monitoring
employees for reaching the desired goals and targets. Coordinating- Leaders and managers must help in providing right direction to their team
members so that they can easily attain the aims and objectives of the company. They also
motivate their workers for gives their best while performing each task.
 Behaviour- This is essential for maintaining good and effective employees so that it will
help in making new goods in proper manner. If employees maintain healthy behaviour
behaviour with their managers then they can feel encouraged and can not think about any
type of work pressure.
It can be concluded that there are various objectives of McDonald's that includes
increasing sales, growth, satisfy customers, gain profit, survival etc. which can be attain by
different functions of management operations.
P6 Assess the impact on operational management and making decisions
There are various factors which are exist in modern business environment and these are
directly influences the management operation and make accurate decision with the help of
managers and leaders. The major factors which are as follows: Corporate social responsibility- It is one of the essential factor which present in
contemporary world that can directly impact on management operation. CSR activities
should be conducted by leaders and managers so it will assist in enhancing brand image
of the product. McDonald's will also used to develop certain functions and activities for
providing benefits to the needy people. Sustainability- Another factor are required to determine before making some decision
regards to the goods manufacturing. Company managers are mainly focus on maintaining
property in appropriate manner (Mendis, Muttaqi and Perera, 2014). They should make
sure that such resources are used in proper way so it can relieve for future time period.
They should also decrease the ratio of wastage which is manufactured.

 Intrapreneurship- It can defined as those person who mainly take risk for resolving
major issues and problems. McDonald's managers should concentrate on taking correct
decision which must be in favour of them and negative decisions are always demotivate
them.
 Stakeholders- A stakeholder are those person who are interested to invest in business
operation of an organisation. They also affect the business activities and functions. It is
required for manager is to make positive decision for fulfil all needs and demands. Each
stakeholder require to share its capital amount in the business activities of an
organisation.
CONCLUSION
From the above mentioned report it can be concluded that management operation is the
main part of every organisation and all the functions required to managed properly so that they
gain success and growth in appropriate manner. There are various theories and approaches which
has been discussed in this report and that should be considered by McDonald's. Along with this,
various roles and responsibilities of manager or leaders has described in this project. The theories
and models help in maintaining business activities of an organisation.
