INTRODUCTION
Operation management (MO) is referred as an area where operation related tasks are
controlled and organised under the management system of managers. This system deals with
operational activities which are performed to get the effective productivity by utilising the
appropriate resources in order to produce efficient output. This area directly deals with operation
and manufacturing of goods and services of the firm. This report will concentrate in managing
operations of Vodafone industry which is a British multinational company that basically deals in
telecommunication sector. This company provides a remarkable mobile phone services to entire
country in order to improvise communication networking across the world. The study will
provide different function of the manager and various roles which leader performs. The report
will also create an understanding about the relationship of leader and managers during different
environmental aspects.
TASK 1
LO1 Leader's Role and Manager's function
Leaders of Vodafone are those motivational persons who possesses an inspiring quality
that develops individual team member in order to produce an effective team. Managers of
Vodafone mainly responsible for controlling planning, organising the activities of business
(Annarelli and Nonino, 2016). They can be considered as those persons who provides a clear
vision of towards the successful objectives. Leader performs various tasks to bring the best out of
its team while manager function is to manage all the work of different department in order to
achieve the overall objective of organisation. There are multiple roles of leader and managers
functions are applied in the business in order to generate effective productivity of the business.
Such roles and function are as described in a tabular format:

Vodafone. Functions of manager is to coordinate the efforts of employees and resources in order
to implement the strategies of the organisation correctly to achieve the main objectives. This
can be done by Effectively leadership theories. These theories may includes Chaos model. These
theories are applied to generate the effective output of the Vodafone. Application of such
theories in business can be helpful in achieving the motivated workforce which in turn provides
the effective operational productivity of the company.
Chaos Theory
It explains the needs of effective leadership and this concept helps in communicating the
main objective or vision of the company (Roman, Natalia, Andrij and Iryna, 2015). Application
of Chaos concept help the managers of Vodafone in taking appropriate steps in order to improve
the working efficiency and effectiveness of employees in Vodafone. Application of Chaos theory
helped the company in strengthening the decision making power of the company and thus strong
management has created a positive environment at work place and employees are engaged
towards better throughput. While, in case of wrong decision of the managers it directly impacts
on the main objective of the company. This leads to the minimised productivity.
Application of Situational Leadership theory helps in taking quick decisions of the leaders in
Vodafone. These decisions influence the encourages the work of team members. On the other
hand if those decisions are biased then it demotivated the behaviour of the employees in
Vodafone. Operation Management can be benefited by the application of the chaos model that
helps in incorporating the principles of of improving the management system of the business.
This model also contributes towards the successful development of the operation Management.
Need hierarchy theory
This model helps in motivating the basic needs of the employees and hence helps in
improving the performance of the employees. Application of the need hierarchy theory in context
of managing the effective operations of the business helps in achieving the better business
performance. This model helps in fulfilling the basic necessities of the employees and hence it
will helps the employees in performing with the more motivated behaviour that helps in
increasing the productivity of the company.
LO2 Application of a role of a leader and functions of manager in different situations
Role of the leader varies and depends upon different situational aspects. Managers also
then function their decisions accordingly. Business is a collection of many units together so

leaders and managers have to apply different strategies in effectively managing the operations of
the firm. It might be possible that situations are For instance, at the time of advancement of
technology in the company. Role of the leader is to communicate members about adopting the
effective strategies of newly implemented technology. Leaders need to motivate the team
members to resist such changes and it can be possible by their inspiring attitude towards
completing a task because leaders are considered as a role model to their team members. Proper
direction and guidance of the leader helps them in resisting such changes and this also retains the
employees for a longer run. On the other hand, Vodafone managers function is to provide proper
training for workers in order to understand new technological aspects. Managers are also needed
to provide effective ways for implementing such altered procedures of the company.
Another situation may be conflicts among the employees. In this situation leaders of the
Vodafone need to communicate properly to both the parties in order to resolve such conflicts.
Leaders will motivate both the parties and also takes a common decision which will be fair
enough. In this situation managers have to organise a meeting for both victims one have to
resolve all their grudges by motivating them.
Leadership approaches:
ď‚· Situational: This approach is determined as leader needs to adopt different decisions at
different situations of the business. Application of Situational leadership has helped the
Vodafone managers in taking the correct situational decisions and this attitude influenced
the employees positively. This how company gets benefited by applying situational
leadership theory as this leads to the positive environment at workplace and results in the
satisfied workforce. Positive aspects of situational concept is occurred at the time when
leaders have to take quick decisions for the betterment of the team and this attitude
inspires the team member and this helps them to produce desired output.
Strength: Situational decisions of Vodafone leaders help in inspiring the team members and this
result in motivated employees. This leads to the improved output.
Weakness:Negative aspect of situational leadership approach includes those unfair decisions
which are taken by the leader in order to promote favouritism (Osei-Kyei and Chan, 2017). This
demotivate individual employees and unsatisfied behaviour of workers may lead to poor quality
output.

ď‚· System: This methodology determines interconnected elements of managing the business
activities. Positive aspects of this methods includes the interdependency of interrelated
elements which enhance interpersonal relationship of the employees and hence it will be
resulted in effective business environment. This have benefited the company in terms of
the effective workforce who results in the efficient productivity for Vodafone. After the
Brexit happens, currently company is facing from unstable economic situations so
application of this theory strengthens the management of the company and also helps in
producing effective operations.
Strength: It promotes good working environment and hence this help in generating desired
outcome of the company.
Weakness: These features may affect negatively as it isolates all the tasks of operation and
promotes the sense of inter-competition among the employees which will result in the conflicts
among the employees of the Vodafone.
ď‚· Contingency: It can be considered as one of the most important leadership approach in
which leaders have to identify individual strength and weakness so that the tasks are
assigned according to their abilities. This benefits the company in making skilful and
strong individuals which leads to the effective operation management of Vodafone.
Strengths: This will inspire team members in dealing with the behaviour of employees.
Motivated employees generate efficient efforts in operation.
Weakness: it may be sometimes impact on negatively on workforce as wrong approaches to a
particular approach affects the operational services of Vodafone (Burrell, 2018).

LO3 Appreciable role of leader and manager's function in managing the operations of Vodafone
Operation management is the comprehensive study which basically deals with wide
variety of activities such as planning of resources, inventory management, quality control and
coordination of operations with sales department in order to achieve higher profitability of the
firm. Leader can improve the operational efficiency of the employees by providing effective
working techniques to employees of Vodafone. Managers can achieve the operational efficiency
by coordinating the efforts of the employees the resources used in the business to generate the
final output. Operation management includes the following key approaches which are described
below:

Lean manufacturing: This approach mainly works in eliminating the wastage at the time of
manufacturing and productions of goods. Lean manufacturing approach of operation
management generally focus in effective utilisation of raw material in order to eliminate waste
production in Vodafone company. Negative aspects includes in wastage of stack and inventory
in the company which increases the cost of material and hence it impacts in the imbalace of
supply chain.
In this situation managers of the company have to timely monitor the activities of its
subordinates and one also have to implement effective machinery in the company so that it will
generate effective and efficient output in managing the operations of business (Terwilliger and
Ozias, Dell Products, 2017). Here leader need to motivate workforce by providing them rewards
and recognition in order to maximise the effective productivity of the company. Strong
communication of the leader will lead to potential efforts of employees.
Six sigma approach: This approach mainly focus in producing top- quality goods and services
along with the detection of error and defects. It includes six stages in improving the quality of
product. It ultimately generates defect free productivity which will be resulted in reduction of
cost of production and it also helps in saving time and energy.
To implement this approach managers of Vodafone have to provide proper training in
order to successfully implement the six stages of production (Musial, and et.al, 2017). On the
other hand leaders need to motivate and encourage the work of the employees this brings
confidence among employees and it will lead to effective productivity. Leaders are also needed
to communicate various efficient ways in performing operational task.
Total quality management (TQM)approach: This method ensures the continues efforts of
management to improve the working procedure of system which will helps in managing top
quality products. It enables customer satisfaction and also helps in increasing the sale of
Vodafone products. On the other hand, if the TQM is not monitored properly then it may
negatively impact on the production of the company and hence low quality output cannot retain
customers. This minimises the sales of the Vodafone and result in less profitability.

Application of TQM in managing the effective operations of the firm can be possible
when managers apply effective strategies in order to provide the healthy working environment. If
the workforce is completely satisfied with the environment then it will produce it will help in
developing inter relationship of employees within the business environment of Vodafone. The
role of the leaders in this situation is to promote the working strategies and effective
communicational abilities also helps in retaining the skilled employees of enterprise.
Critical evaluation of the Operation management includes the application of the situation
decision-making of leaders and Managers who helps in motivating the workforce. In designing
the goods and services of the organisation Operation manager generally seeks all the views and
ideas to improve the design, quality and layout and also process of designing goods and services
for the company. Whereas, if the leaders and managers does not respond properly then it may
leads to the negative impacts on employees and it may effect their capacity to deliver the
effective productivity. It may impacts on the wider community as the poor quality of production
may leads to the huge impact on the health of the people.
LO4 Relationship between leadership and management in business environment
Operation management can be considered as one of the most important aspect as it deals
with the production and manufacturing department. It is referred as the process that transforms
raw goods into finished products and services which aids value for the customer. So this

between the relationship of managers and leaders is extremely important. This relationship
includes proper monitoring of tasks and duties assigned to subordinates.
When higher authority management plans new policies and procedures for the Vodafone
industry, effective implementation of such restructured policies is directly depend on the efforts
of employees which are generally controlled under the supervision of leaders. Synchronised
activities leads to healthy internal environment of the business and thus it will be resulted in
motivated workforce which maximise the productivity (Northouse, 2018). All the activities of
business depends on its production capabilities. High quality products and services aids the
values to the business and it increases the customer satisfaction. Various key importance and
values in caring out the successful business operations are as follows:

Impact of various factors of operation management and decision making of managers on
environment on Wider community
Decision of the managers matters a lot in performing the business operations as these
decisions effect the main objectives of the Vodafone. While making any strong decision higher
authority management have to consider several factors. Such factors are as follows:
Certainty: Managers considers this factor as the positive aspects of taking decision (Fairhurst
and Connaughton, 2014). When the managers of Vodafone improvise the technology in order to
perform efficient tasks then they have to consider various positive consequences of adopting
situational decisions.
Risk factor: if the particular strategy does not work in the right direction then it will negatively
impact main objectives of the business. So before tasking quick decisions managers have to also
consider long term effects which unfortunately may impact on the growth and development of

Effective techniques: Managers have to identify different working techniques in order to
implement the restructured policies. It leads employees in completion of task efficiently

planning new strategies as it leads to balance the profits and expanses of the firm.

Corporate social responsibility can be considered as way that takes responsibility for

situational aspects. The report had mainly focused in applying different theories such as
situational, system and contingency leadership theory on various operational activities of
Vodafone. The research had also mentioned the benefits in application of these theories in
organisation.
