INTRODUCTION
Management and operations is one of the essential part of business that is significant for
successfully and correctly performing required set of activities. Management can be describe as
the process that consist of planning, organizing, decision making, motivating, controlling
employees and other resources of business in effective and efficient manner. Operations
management is refer as practices of business for converting material into finished good with the
motive of maximizing organizational profits (Yu, Zhang and Sun, 2021). This report is based on
Tesco company. This is one of the well known British multinational organization which is
providing its products and services to large customer base. Tesco company is dealing in retailing
sector and it was developed in year 1919. Founder of Tesco organization is Jack Cohen and head
office of this organization is located Welwyn, Garden City, Hertfordshire, England, UK. This
report includes roles or characteristics of leaders and managers. Different roles of leader and
function of manager in different situational context has been analyzed. In this report theories of
situational leadership, systems leadership and contingency is determined. Various approaches of
operation management and roles of leaders or managers is explained. This report consist of
different importance and value of operation management. Apart from this, different factors of
business environment which impact on operational management and decision making by leaders
or manager.
P1. Define and compare the different roles and characteristics of a leader and a Manager
Roles of a Leader and a Manager in Tesco
Looking at the structure and size of the Tesco, it can be said that the company would be
having a very clear line of authority and there will be a very clear hierarchy of different
departments and position in the organization, under which various people work and various
people have their definite job roles. Looking at the most ranks and position in the organization,
one can easily assume that it will be obviously occupied by senior rank officer like directors and
top rank manages, co-founders etc. Thus primary role of such people and top most officials in the
organization is to impart leadership, so their functions and also help other employees in the
organization to perform their functions as well. However, a similar nature of job is also
performed by people holding managerial level ranks as well. But there are some differentiations

between the role of them, and therefore it is important to create clear differentiations between
these roles, so that any confusion cannot get seen and interpreted by any other person. Leaders
and managers, in such a big scale organization, may have some overlapping works, but also there
are many clear differentiations. The report has attempted to discuss specific differentiations
between the roles of thee two functions in the organization through specific points of
discussions.
Coach- It has been seen that both the leaders and the managers in the organization seems to
provide a range of teachings and learning to employees at the workplace, and also they intend to
do so for improving standards of performance of these employees in the organization. But there
is a difference in the level of improvements they want to get imparted to their subordinates.
This difference lies in the level of coaching being imparted. It is the leaders in the
organization sitting at higher most ranks that guides and motivates managerial level employees
in the organization. While making communication with managers of different departments,
divided between various services that are undertaken in one brand name of Tesco, the leaders
communicate different strategies and operations that they have planned for the betterment of
organization. Looking at the coaching function of Managerial level employees, these employees
that are them trained, taught and motivated by senior leaders imparts similar range of
communication in their specific department and in those employees that are working there.
Therefore, it can be said that for the coaching role or the role of imparting new learning and
teachings, the basic differentiation between Leaders and managers is related to levels.
Strategist- It is another primary task that leaders and managers in the Tesco can both be seen
doing. It is a well understood fact that job roles of Leaders, as well as the managers, both
requires them to perform some analytical tasks in the organization. The job is of the nature that
requires them to apply their own minds, in the tasks that they have to do for the company. It is
not like that they are having standard methods to get their jobs done, though there are some rules
to guide them and also they have the help of many academic literatures and theories, but at last
the execution requires these managers to apply their own mind. They are required to intertwine
many theories of management and rules of Tesco, so that quality products can be better delivered
to them. Hence, both of them are strategists in the organization.
