3PROJECT EXECUTION AND CONTROL
Introduction:
At various situations, the project management problems or situations are complicated and
include different interacting elements. All of these contribute to a common outcome. Here, for
instance, poor planning on any project might come out at the surface to be an issue of planning. On
the other hand, the actual issue can be the lack of proper management support, corporate culture and
poor morale of the employees. The following report presents the case studies of Lyle Construction
Project. The project involves suggesting members of functional departments working on their
methods of projects. This results in fast turnaround of the tasks needed to them. Again, the project
team has coerced different sectors of engineering to make activities outside the common procedures.
This is because of special situations across the task. The civil engineering sector, for instance has
developed particular basic structural package of steel. Besides, the piping engineering sector
designed basic piping package such that the department of purchasing can perform the inquiry very
fast. Commonly, the department of purchase needed to wait for the formal kind of take-offs from
those departments prior they case send the inquiries out to the effective vendors. The followings
study evaluates the changes needed for the present case of Lyle Construction Project. For this, their
effects on quality, cost, time and scope of the project along with the techniques utilized for managing
them are investigated. Next, the measures included submitting the request in dealing with these
changes needed for the case study analysis is demonstrated. Then the options for satisfying all the
change requests are discussed and identified along with the risks related to those options. Lastly, the
change request form is completed taking from the instance of another workplace.

4PROJECT EXECUTION AND CONTROL
1. Identifying the changes needed for case study:
For the case of Lyle Construction Project, it was ensured that there has any available space
nearer to the Atlay project group apart from the one that has been occupying. This project team of
Atlay project has been operating under the structure of matrix organization that is plunged suitable to
the present project. Further, they were aware of the delay that has been incurred on the job onset.
The instruction for them has been cutting corners as they were performing can result to save time.
Here, they were proposing the members of the functional departments working for Lyle Construction
Project’s methods resulting in fast turnaround of the activities needed to them (Heldman 2018). The
team coerced different engineering sectors to operate external to the current processes because of
particular situations across the task. Operating in the way how Lyle Construction Project has been
performing results in few issues. Nevertheless, the department of purchasing should arrange the
discounts from vendors on the basis of the quantity of structural steel that is estimated while the
basic take-off was done. As the formal take-off is performed from the side of the section of civil-
engineering they can seek the ways to know the amount of structural steel needed on Lyle
Construction Project by 50 tons. It has been harmful since understanding that there has been extra 50
tons of the structural steel has added the department of purchasing to secure the extra discount of
0.20 dollars every pound. With the effort to undertake the time lost, the project team convinced that
the departments of engineering departments for using the quotation data or catalogue drawings as the
lack the engineering data over specific part of the equipment (Wysocki, 2011). One can further
delay that project (Paredes & Ribeiro, 2018). Nevertheless, as that never changes in substantial way,
Lyle Construction can save possibly one month in the time of engineering. Here, the Lyle has
advised as per the potential benefits and risks to the benefits included as Atlay has been operating
external to common operating process. Here, the measure that project team has been using has been
appeared to be active. Moreover, it has seemed that as the task is done at fast rate than that is
Document Page
5PROJECT EXECUTION AND CONTROL
anticipated initially (Snyder & Stackpole, 2013). Here the snag present in the task happened as
reviewing and approval was done from Lyle’s side. The purchase orders, engineering acquisitions
and drawings have been sitting under the Lyle area for about a couple weeks prior the personnel of
Lyle has been reviewing that. Again, at many times the documents have been returned a couple
weeks after the request for extra data and changes are noted by few of the engineers of Lyle.
Moreover, there is the necessity of change to sit for other weeks in that sectors prior reviews and
returned eventually for the final approval for Atlay (Gablas, Ruzicky & Ondrouchova, 2018). This
must be referred to the procedures of contracts that is stated that Lyle with five days to approve and
review of different documents submitted to that. It is felt to be constituted of the delay to perform the
fact that every team members of Lyle returned back to the homes for their weekends (Frijns, Van
Leeuwen & Bierwolf, 2017).
Various features of change order at Lyle Construction Project are as follows. This must have
the cost to that. The change order must have the expenses related to that. This is even it never cost
the contractor for any sort of modification. Next, it must be paid up-front. As one never get that
done, then they are following the standards. Through getting the change order costs the up-fronts.
While the client needs few changes, the contractor can accept the change and never ask and work for
additional payments. Next, as the client make changes in the mind constantly and ultimately the
client come to the situation as they never need further modifications and the time huge quantity of
changes is done there, the change orders have few hefty amounts (Donovan, 2018). As happens
many times, the contractor can make more money than the principal contract value with that. One
might undergo the change order as any kind of change to the date of completion is done. As changes
in the product are done, the product selected and priced, one is going to undertake the change order
including the specification or price in the contract affecting the contract value. Besides, there is the
notification to the change. Once signed, the change order turns to be the part of Lyle Construction
Document Page
6PROJECT EXECUTION AND CONTROL
Project. This is vital that the changes made should be informed to owners in the way of written
order. Hence it gets covered with the agreement of contract. Few items for Lyle Construction Project
that are to be changed might never be the part of specification or plan or the construction contract
(O'Donovan, 2017). Hence, the working scope that is mentioned in contract is the first part of the
orders. An overall change in price of the contract of construction. Here, another primary part of the
overall change in price. All the line in the change order highlights the items as the price gets changed
in the labour and material. Here, is the additions and subtotals for the profits and overheads, builder
fee and insurance tax and are to be negotiated as the contract is made (Pilkaitė & Chmieliauskas,
2015). Again, the contractors require to assure that as the contract phase goes on the change can be
discussed with the builders. Hence, one might have the items negotiated and prepared without any
question. At many times, the contract changes for amount of fees for the order for change as it can
disrupt the common construction process. Hence everything requires to be demonstrated with the
upfront of the contract. At this case, the contract must mention the number of change orders with the
main contract amount and present contract cost because of the orders. Further, there are changes in
the main scope of works. As the client can change in product, design changes are there irrespective
of the vase and must be made as the order of change (Shirazi, Kazemipoor & Tavakkoli-
Moghaddam, 2017).
Furthermore, there are changes in contract values. As there are inclusion and deletion to that
project, this is possible as one gets the reduced or increased quantity for the contract value that Lyle
Construction Project is amending to the contract. Thus the change order must be undertaken
accordingly. Further, there can be changes in time. Here, the completion and commencement dates
or Lyle Construction Project must be there under the construction contracts. As the project gets
delayed because of the orders of changes, the contractors can negotiate that with the clients delaying
because of change orders and never liable for that. Here, the client can take into consideration that

and the additional time allotted to that contractor for including the changes (Lavoie-Tremblay et al.,
2018). Besides, there is signature of both the parties. The contractor and clients can both sign the
order of change. In performing that, the contract must have the representative of the company and
must be trained to the procedures. Lastly, there is date of change. Here, the signatures must be as per
the changing dates of the designs and items and any kind of amendments.
2. Explaining processes included to submit the request to deal with changes
needed from the assessment of Lyle Construction Project’s case study:
Lyle Construction Project must consider the following steps to deal with request to deal with
changes. Firstly, they must decide where the change is needed. Here, it is vital for any sort of
successful acceptance to change. This is irrespective of the fact that whether it has been Lyle
Construction’s merger or related to redundancies, relocation and acquisitions. This makes the
individuals to be encouraged for working across the change curve. As the change is sudden and
unexpected having an actual effect on Lyle Construction (Babineau & Lessard, 2015). As the staffs
get prepared for the change of the shock higher and take long time for the employees for working
through acceptance. It indicates that Lyle Construction should be considering the timing and method
of change announcements. For introducing that change and to manage then ineffective way, they
require to be confirmed regarding some queries. They should determine what they have been
performing to decrease the shock. Further, they should find out in what way they can keep the
messages inconsistent way and control anger along with supporting employees with depression and
bargaining for reaching acceptances. Lastly, they should seek the way in what way people can react
likely and why. Further, Lyle Construction should consider the commitment to change at the level of
senior management (Demirkesen & Ozorhon, 2017). Besides, they should also determine how the
managers possess expertise required for supporting the employee with the changes and the
Document Page
8PROJECT EXECUTION AND CONTROL
communication with changes in constant way. As this is not done, Lyle Construction must plan for
developing managerial skills ahead to implement the important change.
Next, they must garner executive support. For this, they must keep in mind that they sponsor
the elements that are vital. This must be the operational performance with a project within control
and sense of stability under the groups of stakeholders (Hornstein, 2015). As the sponsors are able to
sense the project which is out of control, they can start to put the distance between the project and
themselves (Hayes, 2018). Further, they must report the sponsors on the signs of progress to deliver
the operational advantages and concentrate on the budget and schedule at that context. Besides, they
should never permit the sponsor to get surprised. It is associated with political scenario. Nothing is
worse in such case for the sponsors to get surprised by other executives. Again, they should play the
game that project managers perform that they never reveal the sponsors regarding the issues and
pretend that all the things can work out. Here, they must every time let the sponsors understand
about vita challenges arising and visit with the pan to manage the concerns (Binder, 2016). Further,
the approach must create the relationship of trust between Lyle Construction and their sponsor and
provide the sponsors with the confidence with the project and the team. Moreover, Lyle Construction
must make the plan of change management and generate allies. They must remind till the end that
the change is never easy for maximum of the organizations. Lyle Construction being the agent of the
change have needed that they force across them for think in critical way and re-evaluate hopefully
the current ways and behaviours to perform that (Bierwolf, 2017).
Provided that maximum become settled in their distinct was after specific time period. This
can be highly complicated and nearly possible for many. Lyle Construction being the change must
remain satisfied with this. As they bring into Lyle Construction as the agent of change, they must be
honest and understand the possibility to be in the business to fetch the efforts of the plan that is
Document Page
9PROJECT EXECUTION AND CONTROL
completely-executed that has been pretty less. As one is agent of change with prolonged record of
track under Lyle Construction with good reputation, they must determine that deliberate and steady
progress for the ultimate aim is the approach likely to yield the successful result (Ansari, 2019).
Irrespective of the case as the agent of change, they must understand that is important and hard task
and they are required to keep going (Lock, 2017). Next, they require proper training and supports.
The training requires the success rate of change management. Here, the harsh reality is that about
70% of the initiatives of change can fail. The failures of change management failures are attributed
to the adverse attitudes of employees with unproductive behaviour of management. As per various
statistics, it is seen that 33% of the behaviour of management never support the changes (Lines et al.,
2015). Moreover, 39% of the employees prove to be resistant towards changes. Since the managers
have been setting the behavioural standards in workplace. This is vital they remain on board with the
changes and can set the best instance and tone regarding the way change can be gained by the teams.
Lyle Construction must deliver the managers with the training of learning to the process of change
management and the way the best advocates for the changes can deliver suitable support to the team
members. As the time of change comes, prodding refresher training of leadership for assuring
managers can lead the people in positive way. This can productively prove to be beneficial (Kerzner,
2019). Furthermore, training is useful to maintain the visibility and then encourage the belongings.
As per recent study, it is seen that about 40% of the staffs of corporate word are aware of the tactics,
strategies and goals of their organization. Here, the business data is the tip of the huge iceberg. Here,
the other vital details like shared assumptions, values, beliefs and perceptions lie under the waterline.
It indicates the staffs have lesser visibility regarding how Lyle Construction are functioning to
conduct business. Here, the key to engagement on the task to have a sense of belonging. This
originates from knowing the environment of the business (Cameron & Green, 2015).

Lyle Construction must provide the sound training of induction clearly sharing the strategies,
values, vision and mission. They must deliver the refresher scopes for those who are omitted to the
memory and are embedded to regular tasks. Furthermore, the training should be promoting employee
engagement. It is known that there are largely engaged staffs with 87% to be less likely seen to
leaving the businesses disengaging counterparts. It demonstrates the significance to engage and
include the staffs under the process of change management (Hui, Abdul-Rahman & Chen, 2017).
Again, the managers must be trained to provide the change message in incremental way for the team.
Thus they can collect the feedbacks from people and utilize the inputs in affecting the changes. Next,
they must communicate status through communicating. At the present era the status of internal
communication is highly popular. It is seen at a recent study of Salesforce, about 96% of the
executives who are surveyed have cited the lack of collaboration and inefficient communication as
the vital factor under the failures of workplace. Various dialogues regarding changes in company
consist of element of the messaging. As per recent surveys, about more than 80% of businesses in
Australia have stated communication of employees is primary element to develop the trust among
staffs (Gareis & Gareis, 2016). Nonetheless, Lyle Construction has found that just 30% of their staffs
have highly rated communications from the leadership of their business. This is meaningful as the
messages of the changes are turning to be lost during translation. As the leaders are unable to know
the significance to keep the employees ate the transition loop, the morale of Lyle Construction and
productivity can suffer ultimately. This has been complicated for the staffs to function for the
business as they feel they are unable to be inspired by or trust (Kalasapudi, Tang & Turkan, 2017).
Further, they must track the progress of changes. Also, they must create the outline of
project. To work with the members of the team for creating the project outline is a great way to track
the progress of project. Every team member of Lyle Construction must provide the input to set up
the goals with practical projects and understand what intended individuals as the element of the
Document Page
11PROJECT EXECUTION AND CONTROL
group. Here, they must sit take the time to sit down with the employees (Serapelo, Erasmus &
Pretorius, 2017). Then they should hash out the outline that is comprehensive in nature. This should
involve the milestones, KPIs or Key Project Indicators and goals as the initial step (Akbar et al.,
2018). Furthermore, Lyle Construction project must establish the milestones and goals. While
considering the ways to track the project progress, it is smart to take into consideration the specific
skill set of the workers at first. The progress measurement is distinct for different people for the
project. More familiar the Lyle Construction’s project manager stays with every staff’s limitations
and skills, the more effective they must understand how to hold them to be accountable. To set up
the tailored milestones and goals with all the members of the teams are prolonged way towards the
satisfaction of the group. This is vital to stress all the role of every team member and the way they
can contribute to the teams overall success. Through putting the larger scenario in mind has been
every time vital. This is even while deploying smaller aims and progress points (Walker & Garrett,
2016). Furthermore, they must check-in in regular way. While considering the way to track the
project progress, they should never underestimate the significance of registration. With the fast and
informal char from the starting of every work sessions can deploy the trust between workers and
project managers (Too, Le & Yap, 2017). It is useful to differentiate the primary difference between
the workers to care about and check-in compared to check up on or feeling judged (Akbar et al.,
2018). Further, communication is the crucial step towards assuring that the project can run in smooth
way. As any worker has trouble to reach the goals and undertake the tasks that are time-sensitive, it
is smart to check-in and tries to get to learn the cause behind that instead of contributing to deploy
structures that have never been helpful and motivational (Cummings, Bridgman & Brown, 2016).
Again, Lyle Construction must ask how they can be useful. Many ways are there as the
project managers are helpful for the workers to be overwhelmed and stressed through tasks.
Suggesting tools, for instance are available to help the functions with the organization skills has been

12PROJECT EXECUTION AND CONTROL
smart option. Besides, they must deploy clear deadlines. Putting the end goal in sight is useful to
measure progress (Dalcher, 2018). They must be clear about deadline are helpful for the employee to
remain on track and finish activities despite getting the over stress and getting overwhelmed (Too,
Le & Yap, 2017). To track the progress of the project is more straightforward as all the people
understand what the timeline of the project has meant. Again, different project managers have
preferred to be active with the ultimate deadline (Klein, 2016). On the other hand, others have
established the deadline for every goal or milestone. Irrespective of the fact what the preferred
method has been as long as every period has been set clearly, the team members house sense of what
they have been working towards. Further, Lyle Construction must keep track of every project to be
easy matter to get stuck to their schedule (Xiong et al., 2016).
Lastly, Lyle Construction’s project must be flexible in nature. For this, they should plan
ahead for the changes. Besides, they should empower every people on the team. Further, they must
break the tasks to a reasonable amount of chunks. The breaking to smaller pieces indicates that Lyle
Construction’s project is giving rise to quick real outputs (Lines, Sullivan & Wiezel, 2015). This
effectively would help the team to remain flexible. Through categorizing more important deliverable
to considerable small prices, Lyle Construction’s project can be able to validate along the path and
gain feedback that can generate better products (Too, Le & Yap, 2017). Finally, they must set clear
expectations and then make validation along the way. Here, in this case one of the common reasons
the project can go off track is as they have clear expectations. Lyle Construction’s plan must be
working to deliver knowledge transfer as an element of engagement. Here, managers should intend
formal documentation to be provided as the engineers expect some sessions for working for
demonstrating the things at real time (Pollack, 2016).

3. Analysing options for satisfying every request for change and risks related to
those options:
Deciding that changes are required:
For this, Lyle Construction’s project must determine what has been threatening to their
business and what long-term goals are never met until the change gets deployed. Here, they must use
the systems such as SMART Goals, Objectives and Key outcomes to assure that the changes are
realistic, measurable and specific. They must utilize the roadmaps in moving their business for
further steps and they must be documented (Pugh, 2016). Finally, they must begin the buzz at the
company regarding changes to be taken place. They require the employees and co-workers
supporting the change to stay successful.
Garnering executive support:
Lyle Construction’s project must get their fellow executives beyond the ideas and changes.
For this, they must filter the feedback and then support into various actionable elements. The
feedbacks are to be solicited never before and also as the change takes place (Lines, Sullivan &
Wiezel, 2015).
Making change management plans and generating the allies:
Through utilizing the goals, Lyle Construction’s project must put their skills in project
management at work. They must find out what requires to be finished and by when. Here, must also
determine what activities are needed for every deadline. For outlining exactly the way Lyle
Construction goes forward they can use change management guidelines, task management tools and
Gantt charts. As they create the plans, Lyle Construction’s project must engage all the business
hierarchy levels (Fewings & Henjewele, 2019). Here, they must determine whom in the business
Document Page
14PROJECT EXECUTION AND CONTROL
must make effective change leaders. They must figure out the change sponsors and based on the
teams of the leaders and effect on the market, tasks are to be assigned with clear type of deadlines
and various relationships for more fabulous projects. Here, they must forget the support and training.
As the plans start to take the impacts, they must find that various staffs require the training for
accommodating changes made at Lyle Construction (Pádár, Pataki & Sebestyén, 2017). As they
outline the way they can change with the plans, they must look for gaps in skills that the staffs must
possess. They must generate the system assuring the crews have latest responsibilities to be ready.
Document Page
15PROJECT EXECUTION AND CONTROL
Communicating status across the changes:
All the change and project managers must be concrete, concise and transparent with their
daily communication for the change leaders, sponsors of changes and the colleagues. Constant
communication with all the individuals at the business is essential for Lyle Construction. This is a
part of stakeholder management and since all the employees must directly affect the regular and
change communication has been imperative (Lines, Sullivan & Wiezel, 2015).
Track the progress:
Every people likes their success metrics. Here, they act as the motivator and act as the
spotlight and sectors require development. They must assure to regard vital agents of changes on
their path and for small success. In doing that they must put the entre morale higher and the
excitement for continuing the project (Zhitlukhina et al., 2018).
Being flexible:
Though they must be using the robust plan of risk management at disposal, various
unexpected changes have been affecting the project. This is a sudden change of personnel and
unexpectedly the weak quarter. They must keep themselves for applying the suitable changes to their
plan for accommodating Lyle Construction’s latest needs (McLaren, Enemark & Lemmen, 2016).
As they are steadfast for the ultimate goals, they should be aware that all the business witnesses the
issues. This is up to Lyle Construction’s project to push the challenges and then make the decisions
for themselves, team and business.

Conclusion:
The change order for Lyle Construction Project can be referred to as the alterations of a
contract made in writing. Further, this denotes to the changes in the main agreement that has been
previously established and already written. At many times the construction project needs few
changes like inclusion, deletion and modification of tasks and are the changes in local laws regarding
construction works. The changes can be performed by designers, architects, contracts and owners
and many more at a slow time as the Lyle Construction Project’s contract is signed. Further, the
changes are included in construction contracts with the orders of written changes. It consists of the
clarifications, bill of quantities and clarifications. Changes to this are been notified to the contractor
having change order. The standard changes orders for Lyle Construction Project include the
following. Firstly, there is a change in project scope. Here, the tenant agencies have requested the
change in design. Secondly, there are unforeseen conditions. In this case, the site conditions have
been different from the intended ones. The changes are needed for the contractor and professionals.
Further, there are professional omissions and errors. This must be requested by professionals or
contractors. Next there are errors consisting of errors in plans of construction plans and
specifications. Lastly, there are omissions involving omission of element or item from that plan.
Further, the engineering sections has referred to the process that can be highly dangerous and result
in extra task and delays to the project further. Here, for instance, the dimensions of scale model are
created on the project over basic data apart from the benefits to possess certified drawings of
vendor’s house. Next, the scale of that model’s section has been off. As the reliable information can
print that s received later and has been apparent that the dimensions are improper. This part of the
model must be created completely.
