INTRODUCTION
Management is defined as the procedure of getting things done through others. In other
words, it is an art of influencing other people to conduct specific procedure or activity.
Management is concerned with several activities that are development of plans, policies and
procedures. It also includes other tasks such as organising, directing and controlling operations
within an enterprise. The objectives of management are to support an enterprise in
accomplishment of business objectives. It also supports firm in achieving success. Role of
manager in an organisation is to manage people, their performance and various other operations
in a company. The most important function of management team is to identify appropriate
solution to business problem.
The purpose of the project is to develop the understanding of management system and its
importance within an enterprise in context of Hilton Hotel. Report also has focus on identifying
and explaining the characteristics of an effective leader.
TASK 1
1.1 Defining management and comparing different management style
Management is defined as the act of managing people or their performance at workplace.
It also includes conducting or supervising of something. Management is considered to be the
important part of business operations. Management also refers to the activity in which manager
by utilising very limited resources conduct several activities such as planning, organising,
directing, supervising and controlling. Role of manager or leader in Hilton organisation is more
than defining the role of an individual in particular project. Manager in Hilton is accountable for
managing finance, flow of information etc. (Galperin, 2014). As all these factors have direct as
well as significant impact as well as influence on business operations. There are different
management styles which can be adopted by manager or leaders in an enterprise for executing
their task in systematic as well as effective manner. It will also assist manager or leaders in
producing effective outcomes. Management style is defined as the characteristics which is
helpful in making suitable decisions. Some of the management styles are autocratic, lazzi faire,
participative, directive and democratic.
Democratic management style-Manager or leaders with this type of management style believes
in involving employees or subordinates in decision making procedure. This management style

enables workers to get motivation. Democratic management style also assists manager or leader
in identifying the innovative
Autocratic-Manager or leaders with this management style have complete control on their
decision. Such types of manager or leader typically make choices based on their ideas and
judgements and rarely accept advice from followers. The advantage of this type of management
style is that it helps manager in making quick decisions. This management style can be beneficial
in few project in which quick and appropriate decisions are required to be made. Limitation of
this management style is that it is effective only in small groups where leadership is lacking.
Autocratic management style tends to discourage group input. The quality of democratic leader
is that they are honest, create and intelligent. The major advantage of this management style is
that group members are encouraged to share their thoughts. Democratic leadership can lead to
better ideas and more creative solutions to several business issues.
Lazzie faire- Manager or leader with this type of management approach delegates some of their
roles as well as responsibilities to their subordinate. The disadvantage of this management
approach is that it has adverse effect on the productivity. Advantage of this management style is
that employees get a chance to show their skills and core competencies (Galperin, 2014).
1.2 Characteristics of effective leader or manager
Communication- This is the most essential abilities which are required to be possess by an
individual in order to become an effective leader. Communications skills are important in terms
it helps manager or leader in defining the roles as well as responsibilities of each individual. It
also allows leader to develop strong relationship with subordinates and encourage them to
improve their performance at workplace.
Interpersonal skills-The interpersonal abilities includes the way an individual interact with other
people at workplace. Interpersonal abilities are required to be developed by human resource
manager in Hilton organisation. As this will help human resource manager team in improving
their practices as well as performance within an enterprise.
Confidence- This is the most important ability which is required to be possessed by each and
every individual. As this will help manager or leaders in ensuring that the decision made by them
is accurate (Jospeh and Kuby, 2015).

an important role in influencing employees to work for betterment of an organisation. Earlier in
Hilton Hotel, there was power culture which had negative influence on employee behaviour at
workplace. In power culture, workers in an enterprise were treated badly, due to which the
company has to face legal obligations and other issues such as high employee turnover .All these
issues further has adverse impact on the firm financial performance as well as productivity.
Therefore, in order to deal with such difficult situations, manager or leaders in an enterprise has
planned to implement change in several operations such as human resource management

practices, management system etc. Proper training arrangement has been made by the manager in
an organisation for employees. Human resource management team were asked to create
attractive incentive or reward system. In order to minimise the cost of production and wastage of
financial resources, effective accounting management system has been implemented at
workplace (Hetzner, Heid and Gruber, 2012)

Developing communication skills will support me in expressing my views and understanding
about various facts to other members at workplace. This will have great impact on my
performance at workplace. This technique would assist me in increasing my participation in
various decision making procedure.
I also need to improve my problem solving abilities. As this will help me in identifying
the appropriate solutions to the problems faced by team members. It will also assists me in
demonstrating that I am also concerned about the problems faced by my team members. Problem
solving abilities will assist me in developing strong relationship with group members.

This strategy will enable me to complete my task on time and save time which I can father utilise

3.1 Describing the motivational techniques
There are several techniques or strategies which can be be used by manager or leaders for
encouraging people to improve their performance and increase their participation in several
business activities. These strategies are it is required by manager or leader to allow the
participation of workers in decision making procedure. Another strategy is that human resource
management team in Hilton Hotel to provide open communication system. As this will enable
employees to share their views and opinion which father help them in gaining satisfaction.
Another effective technique is that leaders or manager in an enterprise need to develop their
focus on identifying the problems faced by workers and providing employees with effective
solutions (Shek and et.al., 2013)
3.2 Justifying the management decision.
The management in Hilton Hotel has planned to develop their focus on identifying the
needs of the workers and providing them with an effective solution. This is an effective strategy
or decision which has been made on the basis of Maslow needs theory which dictates that
employees at workplace feel much more motivated when their requirement or demands are
fulfilled in an appropriate manner.

4.1 Identifying the way own managerial and personal skills will support career development.
The managerial skills help an individual ion identifying their own needs, planning as well
as managing all the activities which are required for fostering career growth. These abilities also
allow an individual to make accurate as well as quick decision related to their career. Personal as
well as manager skills enables an individual to have a clear idea about the direction a person
want to head will assist an individual into thinking about the ability, knowledge and experience
that a person is gaining in actual role and the way these can contribute towards their future
career. Managerial abilities will assist an individual in generating self-awareness about the area
of improvement. It will also support person in preparing personal as well as professional
development plan (Pedler, Burgoyne and Boydell, 2013).
